Per Axbom

Per Axbom is the Swedish communications and design strategist who was born in Liberia and grew up in Saudi Arabia and Tanzania. His international background, early 80s interest in computers and passion for responsible innovation have led to a strong commitment to human rights in tech.

Per is the author of the handbook Digital Compassion, co-host of classic UX Podcast and for more than 20 years has been blogging about the human perspective in digital development on axbom.com.

Today, he considers himself an expert witness to the tech industry's ongoing experiments with human attention, autonomy and health. This has led him to work with education and writing to boost knowledge about risks and promote ethical working methods.

In this talk and workshop you will…

* Understand how digital design can contribute to harm through for example monoculture, invisible decision-making, abuse enablement and more.
* Learn how you can better predict and address impact through design (by adding friction!).
* Find ways of using insights about vulnerability and risk to design more innovative and unique solutions.

So, you think you're a good person

We have never been better at increasing efficiency and rushing to keep pace with run-away technical developments. But although we may be better at doing things the right way, how do we ensure that we are making the right things? How do we know what harm our designs contribute to? The demand for managing ethical queries, before we let technology make decisions for us, often clashes with the misconception that we are always one step behind technical advances.

Marginalized people are getting hurt because of the decisions we make.

In his talk Per Axbom explains why we as humans make bad decisions, how empathy can sometimes be our enemy, and guides us through methods and practical tools for bringing moral judgment into our decision processes. By taking into account positive and negative impact we can better control not only efficiency but also goal fulfilment. All the while, hopefully, staying on the right side of history.

Mostly Harmless at WIAD Zürich 2019

Practical and hands-on exercises to incorporate ethical, sustainable and inclusive thinking into your current design process. You will learn: the difference between task completion and goal fulfilment; why and how to consider the people you are NOT designing for; and how choosing a seemingly painful alternative in the present can lead to bigger rewards in the future.

To avoid harm, and support vulnerable people, you must be prepared to predict, follow-up and manage impact in all parts of the research and design process. With templates and worksheets to guide your work, the workshop will use hands-on exercises and use-cases to provide you both with the mindset and toolset for minimizing damage done by design.

The theme of World Usability Day 2018 is "Design for Good or Evil" — a subject that is very close to heart. I was invited to do a talk at the first edition of the Sthlm Xperience Conference. For some reason I decided early on that I wanted a Gremlins theme. For me it united the period between Halloween and Christmas perfectly, on top of providing two character embodiments for the theme: Gizmo and Stripe. Also, I just love being nostalgic about the 80s.
