Broken

“If you are broken, you do not have to stay broken.”

—Selena Gomez

Here I am at the start of another new year. We arbitrarily measure our time, but measure it we do. Our lives are short in the grand scheme of the universe, and perhaps the desire to feel as though our lives are not lived in vain, we use these measurements of time and accomplishments and experiences to fill our book of life so that one day we may look back and say, “There. A life well-lived, full of purpose.”

Perhaps we feel broken because of a trauma, a weakness in our emotions, or a perceived flaw in our personality. As the quote above states, we do not have to stay broken. We can grow, heal, repair, rejuvenate, and arise from the ashes of our past. That is the focus of many New Year’s resolutions: to become a better person and unbreak the broken.

I have not given up on my quest here, nor have I found myself to be broken, although I can indeed become a better version of myself.

I am here.

I am alive.

I am living.

I am growing.

I have time left to measure the things that need measuring. Time will not care once I am gone. But that is not the point, is it? Because time is one thing that remains unbroken.
