| 3 months ago | mod | Removed Comment I agree that we should do something, defend the person/group being attacked at least, and making sure that the historical circumstances that make a slur a slur no longer apply as a current context.
But that does not solve the issue either. Take "retard" or "idiot" for example. There was one word, became a slur, then the new non-slur one became the new slur, and so on.
That happens with all the slurs. Same with "swear words" like fuck. There is freck, it means exactly the same, used in the same context. Somehow that word is good and the other is bad. And at some point freck will become a swear word.
We should, at all points, defend and protect others being harassed or attacked if possible. What I'm arguing is that empowering those words is part of the issue why they are weaponized, and a futile attempt because other words will be used with the same intent in their place. It is not useful to censor the language.
I'm sorry that you see no value in discussing further, but thank you for doing it until this point at least, you have been the only one debating in good faith. by h3rmit@lemmy.dbzer0.comreason: "debating in good faith" about racial slurs đ |
| 3 months ago | mod | Removed Comment My point being slurs are made up. The spamming is the issue. by h3rmit@lemmy.dbzer0.comreason: lemmy.ml rule 1 |
| 3 months ago | mod | Removed Comment But that word only has power (that was my point with slurs being made up) because people give them power. There is nothing inherently wrong about the slur. And the societal and historical weight it carries is, again, being focused by people, if you ignore that the slur has no power.
The reason the spammer does use it as a "weapon" is because people are super careful with the slur. It is not as a real weapon where, independently of your opinion on the weapon, it can cause harm or be problematic.
Granted, that user would still be annoying as fuck by allcaping "HELLO", and people would leave.
But it is worse because people give power to that word.

https://arrowhead.zendesk.com/hc/en-us
File a complaint with your local government body, I believe in Australia it is illegal to break a game after the fact. To substantially change how it runs to hold it hostage.
But even in other jurisdictions, even 1, 000 disgruntled gamers filing small claims against arrowhead would consume an outsized amount of resources to respond to.
Make noise, be disgruntled, don't play the game, file a negative review, create busy work for the perpetrators. They're stealing time and money from you, it's fair to do it to them. But legally by jet@hackertalks.comreason: undo |
| 10 months ago | mod | Restored Comment its past the refund window, PSN only allows 69 countries to make an account, so 66% of the countries in the world are simply not able to make an account at all. Depending on how things shake out, those players will be locked out of hell divers.
If this hadn't been retroactive, then our gaming brothers from i.e. the Philippines would have bought the game, tried to run it, hit the wall, and refunded it... sucks but they wouldn't have lost time or money.... but now... they lose both. by jet@hackertalks.comreason: undo |

| 10 months ago | mod | Restored Comment Yeah, I'm sure some executive is trying to pump up "active monthly" PSN users for some political, KPI, or share evaluation purposes. We kind of expect them to play these games, its the retroactive bit that's surprising here.

| 10 months ago | mod | Restored Comment Breaking peoples games after 4 months will do that by jet@hackertalks.comreason: undo |
| 10 months ago | mod | Restored Comment The issue isn't so much the PSN requirement, its the PSN requirement after 4 months of building up your character and buying in game currency. If this had been a requirement on day 1, people would grumble, but it wouldn't cause outrage. It's a rug pull, a subversion of expectations, the antithesis of what AH was supposed to be doing.
it feels like a betrayal.
Not to mention the required PSN account, means you now have to accept the PSN terms and conditions and if you don't you lose 4 months of character work and any in game currency you bought..
PLUS PSN is only available for 69 countries, about 33% of all countries in the world. That means many helldivers simply cannot make a PSN account at all, and are facing the prospect of losing everything (unless they lie to make a PSN account using a VPN, which is banned by the PSN terms of service, so a real catch-22).
.... so.... a betrayal by jet@hackertalks.comreason: undo |
