Fields has been married to Burt Goodman for 35 years. When Burt retired from his position at Lumon Industries, they were introduced to Irving Bailiff by his Innie banging on their front door. Fields has correctly surmised that his husband and Irving had some sort of romantic entanglement as innies.

Fields is a devout Christian, and he and Burt attend the Lutheran church. Fields (at least) is a true believer, conferring outside church hours with Pastor Gale.^[1] He also believes that innies are people with their own souls and who deserve to experience love.

• In the credits of the first season and the production script for Season 1, Episode 9, the character's name is listed as “Cecil”. However, this is never said in the show itself, and the character's name is instead revealed to be “Fields” in season 2.
• When Fields first appeared in The We We Are, many viewers falsely identified the performer as John Noble, when it was in fact Arthur Brooks. However, John Noble was later cast as the character in Season 2.
