  • And of course Russia has claimed half of it, because they have about half of the arctic coastline.

the opportunity for profit is too huge

Until their coastal refineries start flooding when Antarctica starts melting. Although even Greenland is already worth 7 meters of sea level rise.

But of course all of that is for future generations to worry about. As long as they can squeeze out a bit more profit before they die, it’s all good.

This is the most literal “après moi le deluge” ever.

  • All of this should be configurable per site. Lots of sites do not need to know my timezone, location, cookies or fingerprint, but some do. I want to give sites I like, those where I’ve intentionally created an account, usually, permission to these things while denying it to every random article I happen to click on.

  • Firefox is great. Mozilla, however, is making some weird moves every now and then. A lot of people don’t quite trust Mozilla to have their interests at heart anymore.

The obvious solution is to use a Firefox fork. I have no idea whether there’s a meaningful difference between the various Firefox forks, and would welcome a summary.

The “socialist speed bumps” is deliciously ridiculous of course, and it’s easy to imagine these complaints coming from rich people who want to race their super low Ferraris through the street, but from the article, the complaint sounds a lot more reasonable; these bumps apparently exceed the council’s own allowed height. And some have indeed been fixed already.

That said, I’m not a huge fan of speed bumps (though I don’t mind them much either), because I think they might encourage these people to buy luxury SUVs instead. I’d rather see extra curves added tot the street. They may do less for the sports cars, but more for the SUVs. A mix is probably best.

But I suspect it’s cheaper to just add a speed bump; requires less thought , less redesign.

  • I’m religious. But I’m afraid I also don’t understand the switch from “overpopulation is a problem” to “people need to have more kids”.

But if people do want others to have more children, maybe invest in the resources and infrastructure to enable that. Make houses affordable for young families, don’t work them to death. Normalise at least one of: free child care, 3 day work weeks, or single person income being enough to raise a family.

Also, in the US, maybe address those school shootings and car deaths; it seems American society has been redesigned explicitly to be as hostile as possible to children. But at least that’s something other countries do better. Houses are too expensive everywhere, though. And wages too low.
