Cyberpunk@lemmy.zip•I find it strange that there's no Steampunk community on LemmyEnglish
3·14 days agoI think that’s what I find so strange. It’d be one thing if someone created a steampunk community and then just let it sit with zero posts, but for no one to even bother creating that community in the first place? It seems like no one actually cares about steampunk at all. And while I’m not a huge steampunk fan, I thought there were still some steampunk fans out there.

Cyberpunk@lemmy.zip•I find it strange that there's no Steampunk community on LemmyEnglish
3·14 days agoThat’s a very good point… Solarpunk has an entire ideology with various independent aspects that can each support their own communities, while steampunk is primarily an aesthetic. I know steampunk also has a heavily DIY mindset, but there isn’t much to discuss other than “here’s how I made a thing.” I wonder if that’s due to being a primarily “fantasy” genre for a world that can’t actually exist.
And I guess that’s what cyberpunk and solarpunk have in common… While they each have a unique aesthetic, they aren’t just an aesthetic. There are entire world views underpinning that aesthetic. One happens to be aspirational while the other is a warning, but they both provide lots to areas for discussion.
Huh, I hadn’t thought about that before, thanks! I always kinda viewed steampunk as cyberpunk’s little brother but cyberpunk actually has more in common with solarpunk. Neat!
Here’s a quick snippet from an interview with William Gibson in 2014:
“I was really fond of the film that I wrote and that Robert shot, but that wasn’t the film that Sony Image Works released. It’s a really extreme example of not being the director’s cut. It was written to be comic in its own way, and be a commentary on sci-fi films and how they are made. Keanu never played any of it straight because we didn’t want him to.”
So yeah, it sounds like Keanu’s performance was intentional but then the studio messed with the movie so much that his performance didn’t make sense anymore.
Doesn’t the movie start with him in like Singapore or something then he flies to Newark?

EDIT: Also, have you already watched Cyberpunk: Edgerunners?

4·1 month agoThey should have just turned Tron 2.0 into a movie.
I completely agree. I’m still annoyed at how Tron: Legacy rendered Tron 2.0 non-canon. I think it was the best entry in the Tron franchise. I loved how they visited the internet and a server being corrupted by a virus. Awesome ideas.

Cyberpunk@lemmy.zip•I want to complain about Running Man (2025)English
4·2 months agoYeah, I saw an interview where Edgar Wright said he changed the ending and got it approved by Stephen King as basically being the closest you could stick to the original ending in today’s world.
In this new movie, it ends with
spoiler
the main character flying the airplane at the studio building but it gets shot down before hitting the building (with the main character ejecting right before the plane blows up).

2·2 months agoTotally agree. I was shocked to learn The Accent was an original IP. The world bullring and lore were so fleshed out I had just assumed it was based on some TTRPG I hadn’t heard of. The gameplay was good but the world was amazing.

Do you mean cyberpunk with the inclusion of magic? Shadowrun has been around since 1989. I’m not saying cyberpunk and post-cyberpunk can’t co-exist (we can still have cyberpunk works in a post-cyberpunk era) but I don’t think adding fantasy elements moves it past cyberpunk.
But to take your example of Warframe… maybe post-cyberpunk would include space travel? I would argue most classic cyberpunk stories stay on Earth (or low-Earth orbit) so maybe exploring the stars would be expanding the cyberpunk setting?
