| 2 months ago | mod | Removed Comment yeah… this… isn't a surprise i'm afraid. i tried to point out in another comment that russia and america are pallet swapped versions of the same thing: racist genocidal imperial regimes. fundamentally, when you get right down to it, trump doesn't care about Ukraine. he neither loves nor hates the culture or people that exists there. he said he'd end the war day one. well… he says a lot of things. if you peel back what he says to investigate what he does you find a man who has for 50+ years exploited racism to make money, and has deep ties to the russian state apparatus.
america has been a frustrating and intransigent ally over the course of this war, and i mean going all the way back to 2014. for the first year of this particular invasion our intransigence was put on full display, ignoring all humanitarian aid requests and focusing entirely on selling to Ukraine only weapons that weren't truly asked for. then russia orchestrated the escalation of Israel's ethnic cleansing of Palestine. there exists no evidence that they did this other than the timing of everything. Ukraine was in the middle of a successful counterattack, american politicians were finally starting to grow some spines, and then suddenly the ally America has most consistently provided "aid" to "needs" more "aid?" nah, something's fishy there.
and that's when it happened. suddenly all Ukrainian aid packages' funding is tied to israeli "aid" funding in the senate. and the intransigence reaches new heights. american citizens, reasonably, call on their lawmakers to vote no on these joint aid packages which see a much higher proportion of aid go out as "aid". the funding of one genocide results in a blind eye being turned to another.
i will continue to support Ukraine's resistance efforts. i have friends there. even as my government abandons them to die. everytime i lose touch with a friend, i find myself wondering if i'll ever hear from them again. it's an experience i started having in 2014 when i lost touch with my boss' host family from his visit in 2013 documenting the deep cultural ties between my home of Appalachia and Ukraine. 11 years later and that abrupt loss of contact still hurts, even as i've lost more contacts over the years.
