Thanks for the reply! I don't know if I'm banned either, but I'm happy to continue the conversation. (I'm sorry if I've done something ban-worthy, I'll be happy to stop whatever I'm doing that's bad. Edit: Sorry, I now see that debate is somewhat forbidden here, should've investigated the forum closer!) 1) Not completely sure I understand how Peter Singer qualified as an epistemic mugger, but if your point is that infinities make utilitarianism really wonky, absolutely. I do think the drowning child thought experiment has value still, especially as it doesn't contain infinities, that chugging Peter in the river would be bad, and that prosecuting people like SBF who try to defend themselves with bizarrely misunderstood moral philosophy is good. 2) Naturally the donation strategy in Bangladesh should be updated once that charity is no longer the most effective, e.g. if so much has been donated that they've solved the problem in Bangladesh. In **The life you can save**, its explicitly argued that donating to charity is likely not the most effective action if we're talking about the resources of an entire society, but it's something you can do right now to great effect. You can _both_ save the drowning child and work towards a more fair society that stops more suffering in the long term. You can seize the means of production without new shoes. What the idiotic longtermists get wrong is that somehow you should only focus on the long term and ignore the child that's drowning right now. 3) Stopping the Bangladesh famine from even happening clearly has much greater utility than donating money to save a single life. But while I have very little individual power to stop the famine, I do have the power to save a life directly. Again, I can organize to change the system while _also_ donating what I can to the most effective charity. That's what Peter Singer argues, and I do indeed find it convincing.

Huh, well shit. Thanks for pointing that out, guess I need my brain re-wrinkled. What is a moral framework then, if not a system for deciding if an action is morally good based on agreed-upon principles? And what elements of EA makes it a political framework rather than a moral one? Reading Singer, it really seems all the arguments relate to the morality of saving lives through charity, not the distribution of power, resources and privilege within a society or communal framework.

I mean, according to the article > As of now, there are around 3,028 billionaires in the world. Of those, only four have publicly committed to donating their wealth according to Effective Altruist (EA) principles. So I guess the issue isn't so much that EA philanthropists are ineffective, it's that there are so few of them.

> Nah, it doesn't. Utilitarianism is pretty useless; in this case, it's pretty fucking clear that the IDF are utility monsters. Don't worry, utility monsters aren't real. A utilitarian would say the "benefit" the IDF reaps from doing genocide is completely dwarfed by the suffering they cause. > And what do you mean by "basic universalism"? That all individuals have equal value independent of race or belief or religion or whatever. A fundamental element of EA. > Singer is trying his best not to say what is obviously true (genocide bad) Sure, I don't really care about him, as I said, we're allowed to apply the EA framework without him leading the way.

People need to learn the difference between speaking in private and in a public forum, maybe I was rude but people refusing to use basic consideration is rude too and I'm fed up of people shitting up every discussion with faulty logic hidden by concealed details. Say the relevant information required by your assertion, it's not difficult.

Please when referencing specific details about a location name the area you're talking about rather than say 'here' it's so annoying having to try and guess what you mean or if you're just making stuff up. According to Wikipedia the first country to ban corporal punishment of children was Sweden in 1979 which is why I suggested the last possibility. I don't really think it's just an English language thing in most areas of the world, again you didn't say where you're talking about so it's not possible to take any useful information from your post. A lot of non English speaking countries are very intense about corporal punishment, 'spare the rod spoil the child' is not an English maxim it's from proverbs originally in Hebrew and popularized in Latin which was popular all over the Christian and Muslim world. The Indian, Chinese, etc cultures all have similar histories and similar cultural battles going on today so it's not like it's strictly an abrahamic thing either. I don't get why you'd claim that this is specific to English speaking people? or maybe you 1qmisused the word anglophone?

Which would have been a useful thing to include in your comment if you wanted people to understand what you're talking about. I know I'm the badie for expecting people to use basic sense when constructing an argument in a public forum but if people don't express what they mean then there's no point them talking. And yes it's an interesting thing you point out and there may be some merit to it

> A comfortable and easy life without struggle or conflict is miserable, and just makes you a slave to the hedonic treadmill. When you live for pleasure, no pleasure is ever enough, and continued success will just leave you so pampered that any task that’s challenging or outside your comfort zone will begin to feel onerous. I feel like that's absolutely true, depending on personality type maybe. It's fun for a bit here and there.

Well that's true enough, most masks won't do a whole lot to stop a virus like COVID. I agree with you there. I'm just more upset that people wouldn't even do that small amount to help out their fellow man (and woman). They'd rather stand on some vague political ground that the government can't tell them what to do or put in their bodies, while cramming hostess bakery products and sugar laden drinks down their throats every chance they get. : / am I Johnny Rico? Cool, dude!

White or not never had anything to do with where you put your dick or tongue. Nobody ever said Irish weren't white, they just hated Irish. Jewish yeah ok, a lot, not all, a lot weren't white, but a lot were, it's why "Greenspan" changed to "Alexander" works without a hitch but maybe Sarah Silverman didn't change her name because it was bloody obvious. Italian is white, generally, I think you mean Sicilian.
