Removed Comment Idiot. From Wikipedia: The [electoral system](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electoral_system "Electoral system") used for the election of members of the [Australian Parliament](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parliament_of_Australia "Parliament of Australia") is governed primarily by the *[Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_Electoral_Act_1918 "Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918")*. The system presently has a number of distinctive features including compulsory enrolment; [compulsory voting](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compulsory_voting "Compulsory voting"); majority-[preferential](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranked_voting_systems "Ranked voting systems") [instant-runoff voting](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant-runoff_voting "Instant-runoff voting") in [single-member seats](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single-member_district "Single-member district") to elect the [lower house](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lower_house "Lower house"), the [House of Representatives](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Representatives_/(Australia/) "House of Representatives (Australia)"); and the use of the [single transferable vote](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_transferable_vote "Single transferable vote") [proportional representation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proportional_representation "Proportional representation") system to elect the [upper house](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upper_house "Upper house"), the [Senate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Senate "Australian Senate").[\[1\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electoral_system_of_Australia#cite_note-:0-1) by TheFermentalist@reddthat.com

Removed Comment Australia doesn’t have a winner take all system though. Voting is compulsory, and uses a Single Transferable Vote system called preferential voting. This means that if your preferred candidate doesn’t get 50% of the vote in the first count, your vote transfers to your second choice candidate, and then your third, and so on until someone is elected. by TheFermentalist@reddthat.com

Unbanned orioler25@lemmy.world from the community Fairvote Canada@lemmy.ca
reason: Upon review: User engaged in substantive political debate with forceful but academically grounded arguments. No evidence of bad faith engagement or verifiable vote manipulation beyond mutual downvoting in heated exchange. Political disagreement, however sharp, does not constitute rule violation. Ban escalation from 30 days to permanent was not warranted.
