A person with less sees someone struggling and spends what little they have to help, no fanfare, no calculus. The gift wasn't the money, it was the thought, the solidarity. That matters way more than the dollar figure.
If anyone wants to drag out studies about who gives more by percent or absolute value, fine, but it misses the point. Generosity isn't a contest. When it was time for him to go, he wanted to hang back. I had to break it to him that I wasn’t in for a long-term relationship. I cooked him a nice dinner and then kicked them out.
I still think about him sometimes
