Removed Comment Uh, this seems like fairly bad idea. First off, there are laws in many countries governing giveaways. You could be violating local laws and it is likely that a large gift card will flag local tax authorities. Additionally the people who are funding Lemmy.zip may or not be ok with you spending it on random people. This could be interpreted as either misuse of funds or at worse money laundering. The other problem is that when there is a transfer of something of value you can end up with false expectations. For instance, if I were to except I might feel that I owe something to you. On the flip side you also could end up expecting something that was not communicated. What happens if I were to accept it and then stir up a bunch of trouble? Would you feel betrayed? The last issue is the fairness problem. The fact that it is random means that you could end up showing favoritism if the money ended up going to someone you interact with a lot. This maybe not be the case but it could still bread jealously and discontent. The perception of others is hard to predict especially with strangers. You might end up being on the front page of Lemmy as the most corrupt admin. Moral to story, this is nasty can of worms. I will not partake in this as it is to much of a liability. I am also not sure what the end goal is anyway. I really appreciate your time and effort but I feel like this will backfire. If you want to do something for the community consider hosting a community event or project. You could recruit some help to setup a fun community game. We have the canvas event game already but the sky is the limit. by Possibly linux@lemmy.zip
