10 months ago	mod	Removed Comment Maybe we could have learned from the source (like say, investment banks such as Goldman-Sachs) and realized that bailing out banks and failing corporations only encourages them to be even more reckless and to hoard as much wealth as they can? How do you think we got where we are today? We could have looked at the precarity created by treating housing as an investment vehicle and then taken a page from our own history books and increased funding for housing at the federal level. Taken the opportunity that was exploited by private investment and instead used public investment to build up non-market subsidized housing as a means of setting a price floor on rental units, maybe if we had we wouldn't be facing such a crisis with so many people unhoused or a couple missed paycheques away from it. None of this would have happened under the Harper government which appointed Carney to his position, but we absolutely need to stop making the mistake of thinking that private investment is good solution for issues which have inelastic demand. We understand intuitively why the public funds infrastructure, healthcare, education, emergency response, and so on, and yet are somehow baffled by the notion that food and housing, things which are requirements for survival, might benefit from similar handling. Canada used to have a much more functional federal housing commission that made living more affordable.
