Ideophones are marked words which depict sensory imagery and are usually considered iconic by native speakers (i.e., ideophones sound like what they mean). Owing to shared cross-linguistic characteristics of expressive prosody, reduplication, and unusual phonological structure, ideophones have been likened to meaning performed. Iconic hand gestures frequently occur alongside ideophones choreographed to the timing of syllables. Given the visual modality’s richness in iconic affordances, these gestures have been supposed to help interlocutors infer semantic nuances and contextualize utterances, especially when an (...) ideophone is polysemous, and may even inform speakers’ mental representations of spoken language as imitative. Such gestures should therefore be learnable and replicable like any unit of language. This is what we indeed find. Using a linear iterated learning paradigm, we investigated the stability of iconic gestures from Japanese and Korean ideophones transmitted across five generations. Despite noise in the visual signal, participants’ hand gestures converged, speaking to the emergence of phonological targets. Handshape configurations over time exhibited finger coordination reminiscent of unmarked handshapes observed in phonological inventories of signed languages. Well-replicated gestures were correlated with well-guessed ideophones from a spoken language study, further highlighting the complementary nature of the visual and spoken modalities in formulating mental representations. What is the je-ne-sais-quoi? How - if at all - can it be put into words? In addressing these questions, Richard Scholar offers the first full-length study of the je-ne-sais-quoi and its fortunes in early modern Europe. He describes the rise and fall of the expression as a noun and as a topic of debate, examines its cluster of meanings, and uncovers the scattered traces of its 'pre-history'. The je-ne-sais-quoi is often assumed to belong purely to the realm of the (...) literary, but in the early modern period it serves to articulate problems of knowledge in natural philosophy, the passions, and culture, and for that reason it is approached here from an interdisciplinary perspective. Placing major figures of the period such as Montaigne, Shakespeare, Descartes, Corneille, and Pascal alongside some of their lesser-known contemporaries, Scholar argues that the je-ne-sais-quoi serves above all to capture first-person encounters with a 'certain something' that is as difficult to explain as its effects are intense. When early modern writers use the expression in this way, he suggests, they give literary form to an experience that twenty-first-century readers may recognize as something like their own. (shrink)

RésuméCet article étudie la contribution de Montaigne au débat qui a lieu au xvi e siècle sur l’utopie comme forme de réflexion en sciences politiques. Nous montrons qu’il s’agit d’un apport à la fois important et marginal, dans la mesure où l’auteur des Essais reste visiblement en retrait du débat, ainsi que d’autres controverses politiques. C’est précisément le lieu de retrait qu’il invente qui nous intéressera surtout ici. Notre hypothèse est qu’il s’agit d’un lieu textuel dont l’auteur espère qu’il sera (...) capable d’abriter une communauté virtuelle de personnes qui ont en commun une culture de la dispute comme « exercice de notre esprit ». Or, cet exercice met Montaigne aussi souvent en désaccord avec lui-même qu’avec les autres, d’où l’ambivalence dont il témoigne à l’égard des utopies dans les Essais. (shrink)
