The discussion paper synthesises the insights shared during a keynote panel at the 26th International Philosophy of Nursing Conference, themed “Reimagining a nursing ecosystem in an uncertain world.” It delves into the substantial impact uncertainty has on nursing, offering innovative strategies for reconceptualization. Through a critical examination of evidence‐based practice, the tendency to homogenise nursing is discussed, prompting advocacy for a Nietzschean political framework as a form of resistance and emancipation. Drawing inspiration from Donna Haraway, a transition from individualistic (...) to relational approaches is needed, especially amidst social and economic instability. Furthermore, the integration of caritas and Indigenous epistemologies underscore the significance of cultural sensitivity in nursing. Meanwhile, Ubuntu philosophy champions empathy and collective values, while a convergence of Eastern and Western philosophical traditions promises to enrich nursing practice. Ultimately, the panellists advocate for overcoming rigid ideologies in favour of a pluralistic approaches, ontologies, epistemologies and ethics to address contemporary challenges, and signal for a philosophical reorientation to engage uncertainty and reshape nursing roles in an ever‐evolving and world. In this paper we argue the need to reimagine research ethics frameworks to include notions of environmental sustainability. While there have long been calls for healthcare ethics frameworks and decision-making to include aspects of sustainability, less attention has focused on how research ethics frameworks could address this. To do this, we first describe the traditional approach to research ethics, which often relies on individualised notions of risk. We argue that we need to broaden this notion of individual risk to consider (...) issues associated with environmental sustainability. This is because research is associated with carbon emissions and other environmental impacts, both of which cause climate change health hazards. We introduce how bioethics frameworks have considered notions of environmental sustainability and draw on these to help develop a framework suitable for researchers. This book brings together leading international scholars in the philosophy of education to address some of the most pressing issues facing education today. Chapters draw upon recent research across several fields including philosophy, education, and the social sciences to address and raise important questions concerning the aims, responsibilities, and future of education, often with significant implications for educators and policymakers. These questions include: what role should education play in responding to the climate crisis or the mental health crisis among young (...) people? Do educators have responsibilities to teach students how to build healthy relationships? What is the role of education in reducing extremism? How should we understand ‘decolonisation’ in education, and does decolonisation conflict with education’s epistemic aims? How should we conceive of ‘educational justice’? How can we make education fairer after the Covid-19 pandemic reversed progress towards educational equality? What are education’s aims? Is its ultimate aim to promote human flourishing? And, is it even helpful to think of education as having aims at all? Chapters point to important avenues for improving education in the future, including the prospects for character education, particularly how to cultivate students’ autonomy and honesty; the role of well-being in schools; the need for a prominent relationships education curriculum; the role of art in countering extremist narratives; and the mentoring obligations of university teachers. “Reimagining a global ethic” is a project worthy of Andrew Carnegie and of the Carnegie Council's upcoming commemoration of his founding gift in 1914. As a collaborative research project stretching forward over the next three years, it ought to be integrative and reconciliatory: that is, it must try to understand the globalization of ethics that has accompanied the globalization of commerce and communications and to figure out what ethical values human beings share across all our differences of race, religion, (...) ethnicity, national identity, and material wealth. When human beings do disagree morally, the search for a global ethic becomes an attempt to elucidate by analysis what exactly people are disagreeing about, so that, after arguing out our differences, we can either agree to disagree or work together to find common ground. Finding common ground on large ethical matters and understanding more deeply why, in some instances, we remain at odds with each other is worthwhile in itself, but it might also further Andrew Carnegie's original goal in founding the Council, which was to reduce the amount of conflict and violence in the world. How is it that individuals who deny experiencing visual imagery nonetheless perform normally on tasks which seem to require it? This puzzle of aphantasia has perplexed philosophers and scientists since the late nineteenth century. Contemporary responses include: (i) idiosyncratic reporting, (ii) faulty introspection, (iii) unconscious imagery, and (iv) complete lack of imagery combined with the use of alternative strategies. None offers a satisfying explanation of the full range of first-person, behavioural and physiological data. Here, I diagnose the puzzle of aphantasia (...) as arising from the mistaken assumption that variation in imagery is well-captured by a single ‘vividness’ scale. Breaking with this assumption, I defend an alternative account which elegantly accommodates all the data. Crucial to this account is a fundamental distinction between visual-object and spatial imagery. Armed with this distinction, I argue that subjective reports and objective measures only testify to the absence of visual-object imagery, whereas imagery task performance is explained by preserved spatial imagery which goes unreported on standard ‘vividness’ questionnaires. More generally, I propose that aphantasia be thought of on analogy with agnosia, as a generic label for a range of imagery deficits with corresponding sparing. (shrink)

This article reimagines cinematic experience through Henri Bergson’s concept of durée—lived time as qualitative flow—and Gilles Deleuze’s cinematic philosophy, challenging traditional narrative and representational paradigms in film studies. By integrating phenomenological analysis with close readings of The Silence of the Lambs (Jonathan Demme, 1991), The Stanley Parable (Galactic Cafe, 2013), Parasite (Gisaengchung, Bong Joon-ho, 2019), and Memories of Murder (Salinui Chueok, Bong Joon-ho, 2003), we propose "cinematic durée" as a dynamic fusion of filmic constructs and viewer perception, positioning spectators as (...) active co-creators. Qualitative cinematic elements like lighting, interactivity, and pacing, understood as Bergson's (1889) qualitative multiplicities that evoke distinct experiential textures (Deleuze 1966) shape subjective durée, evoking diverse emotional responses, from dread to empowerment, as evidenced by audience reactions spanning decades and media. Extending Vivian Sobchack’s embodied phenomenology and Laura U. Marks’s intercultural senses, this study transcends linear models (e.g., David Bordwell’s narratology), embracing analog, digital, and non-Western contexts. Virtual reality, Carne y Arena (Alejandro González Iñárritu, 2017), further tests participatory durée, blending bodily engagement with temporal synthesis. Methodologically, we employ philosophical inquiry, supplemented by audience insights, and propose future empirical tools—such as eye-tracking and interviews—to explore affective resonance, offering a novel framework for cinema’s temporal and emotional architecture. This interdisciplinary approach—bridging film theory, cognitive psychology, and cultural studies—reveals cinema as a continuous process of becoming, reshaping perceptions of time, space, and identity across global landscapes. Reimagining suggests the idea of opening up new, unconventional spaces of possibilities for an activity or an entity that already exists. At its most transformative, the activity of reimagining develops spaces of possibilities that alter the very definition of that activity or entity. What then would it be to reimagine the future of engineering?

This paper investigates the adaptive reuse of industrial heritage within the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) ì framework, addressing preservation, sustainability, and community development challenges. Often neglected or underutilized, industrial heritage sites hold significant potential for transformation into vibrant spaces that address social, economic, and environmental needs. This study presents a multi-scalar methodology integrating participatory planning, design innovation, and resilience thinking. Structured in five main sections–including a literature review, theoretical positioning, methodological framework, empirical case studies, and a synthesis–the paper (...) aligns its contributions with SDGs 3, 4, 5, and 11. The outcomes demonstrate that adaptive reuse can become a catalytic mechanism for sustainable urban growth, equitable community engagement, and reinforced cultural identity. The notion of natural kinds has been widely criticized in philosophy of science but also appears indispensable for philosophical engagement with classificatory practices. Rather than addressing this tension through a new definition of “natural kind”, this article suggests materiality as a substitute for naturalness in philosophical debates about scientific classification. It is argued that a theory of material kinds provides an alternative and more inclusive entry point for analyzing classificatory practices, which is specified through an account of “restricted malleability” of (...) materiality and further analyzed as (1) gradual, (2) multi-dimensional, (3) scalable, (4) interactive, and (5) purpose sensitive. This book examines what value if any, the state has for the pursuit of progressive politics; and how it might need to be re-thought or reimagined to deliver transformative change. Is it possible to reimagine the state in ways that open up projects of political transformation? This interdisciplinary collection provides alternative perspectives to the 'antistatism' of much critical writing and contemporary political movement activism. Contributors explore ways of reimagining the state that attend critically to the capitalist, neoliberal, gendered and (...) racist conditions of contemporary polities, yet seek to hold onto the state in the process. Drawing on postcolonial, poststructuralist, feminist, queer, Marxist, and anarchist thinking, they consider how states might be reread and reclaimed for radical politics. At the heart of this book is state plasticity - the capacity of the state conceptually and materially to take different forms. This plasticity is central to transformational thinking and practice, and to the conditions and labour that allow it to take place. 'Transgender’ is often described either as an identity, or else as the full spectrum of gender nonconformity. In this essay, I suggest that these descriptions do not align with the conceptual labor that we often ask ‘transgender’ to do: highlighting people who engage in forms of self-directed gender nonconformity that are heavily penalized.

This chapter reimagines Religious Studies by challenging fixed identities and essentialized categories, using Religion and Gender as Discursive, Intersectional, and Performative (DIP) categories of knowledge production. Rooted in intellectual autonomy, autodidacticism empowers individuals to control their learning trajectories. This essay considers whether the just war tradition is compatible with Christian theologically grounded conceptions of mercy. After considering and rejecting positions that pit mercy and war against each other, the essay mines the work of Walter Kasper and James Keenan on Christian mercy to develop a position that reimagines mercy as compatible with traditional just war criteria. In particular, this analysis leads to the conclusion that Christians may endorse just war in the form of humanitarian intervention. This paper sets out to reimagine education through a cultural perspective and explores education as a performative practice that establishes certain borders of ‘public’ belonging. Wide-spread debates about the public dimension of schools and universities have focused on how economic rationales need to be replaced with alternative visions of education. This paper seeks to contribute to this revisioning of the public in education by reclaiming education as a specifically cultural endeavour, one tied to practices that are at once both performative (...) and aesthetic. To this end, I draw on theoretical notions of publicity that highlight its performative character. I then offer a reading of a socially engaged art project in order to suggest ways in which this performative character of publicity can be seen to be educational. Speech act theorists tend to hold that the illocutionary force of an utterance is determined by one interlocutor alone: either the speaker or the hearer. Yet experience tells us that the force of our utterances is not determined unilaterally. Rather, communication often feels collaborative. In this paper, I develop and defend a collaborative theory of illocutionary force, according to which the illocutionary force of an utterance is determined by an agreement reached by the speaker and the hearer. This theory, which (...) builds upon linguistic and sociological work on adjacency pairs and conversational interaction, can accommodate the complexity of speaker intentions (which may be disjunctive, indeterminate, and/or inconsistent over time), and renders speech act theory more compatible with theories of common ground. The importance and relevance of philosophy has come to be recognized more today than ever before in recent history. In many colleges and universities philosophy is now an essential component of interdisciplinary studies. The public interest in philosophy is increasing. UNESCO’s initiatives to promote philosophy are laudable. Growing recognition of intersections between our health and the environment, healthcare systems and the environment, and health research and the environment has led bioethics scholars to advocate that the field readopt a broader perspective that considers nature. As part of doing so, we urgently need to reimagine research ethics concepts and frameworks so that they account for the environment. This paper focuses on how we should reinterpret the ethical concept of social value in health research. The concept is understood in (...) absolute and relative terms, and both must be revised. The absolute social value of health research is determined by judging its magnitude of benefits and likelihood of benefits. This paper aims to generate considerations for judging health research's magnitude of benefits that capture its environmental benefits. We start from the most comprehensive definition of absolute social value to‐date and show how it falls short of adequately capturing the magnitude of potential benefits generated by health research that yields knowledge related to nature. Based on that analysis, we propose how to revise the definition of absolute social value to better account for the environment. Schopenhauer and Spengler served as immediate sources for Wittgenstein's reliance on Romantic metaphors of depth concerning music. The onset for his philosophic intervention in the discourse was his critique of Schenker's view of music and his general shift toward the 'anthropological view', which occurred at the same time. The necessity of obtaining pediatric assent for research participation is well established within international ethical guidelines. However, the effective implementation of these guidelines poses significant challenges for research ethics committees in numerous developing countries, such as Pakistan, characterized by diverse cultural and socio-economic contexts. This paper critically examines the moral underpinnings of assent, rooted in the principle of respect for persons, which aims to empower, engage, and educate children involved in research processes. Through a case example, this paper reveals the (...) unique obstacles faced by researchers and clinicians in Pakistan, which stem from socio-cultural norms and economic disparities. Such challenges endanger the ethical foundation of assent, creating a disconnect between its philosophical basis and practical execution. Although international guidelines permit contextual adaptation of assent procedures, such flexibility is not adequately articulated within the guidelines, nor is it typically prioritized in practice. This gap undermines the purpose of assent and inadvertently increases the risk of harm to child participants—not from the research itself but rather from a process designed to protect and empower them. This paper emphasizes greater awareness among stakeholders regarding these challenges, urging a reimagined assent process in diverse global contexts. By introducing a clear rationale within research guidelines, the intent is to ensure that researchers and Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) prioritize the contextual understanding of assent, transforming it from a mere procedural formality into a meaningful practice that mitigates potential risks to children and adolescents involved in research. This paper examines the prescription stimulant shortage in the United States, a crisis that has intensified since the FDA’s 2022 announcement of an Adderall shortage. The regulatory, systemic, and societal factors driving the shortage are analyzed — including the surge in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnoses, expanded use of telehealth services, and disproportionate impact of the shortage on marginalized communities. It’s argued that existing health inequities are exacerbated by barriers to medication access as current regulatory frameworks are ill-equipped to address the (...) growing demand for prescription stimulants, causing substantial harm to patients. A series of reforms are proposed — including modernizing the DEA’s quota system, strengthening interagency collaboration between the DEA, FDA, and HHS, and diversifying pharmaceutical supply chains to enhance resilience. These reforms aim to balance the dual imperatives of preventing misuse and ensuring equitable access to medications for patients with legitimate medical needs. By offering a comprehensive analysis of the prescription stimulant shortage and actionable policy recommendations, this paper seeks to inform regulatory reform, foster a more adaptive, patient-centered approach to ADHD care, and provide a roadmap for addressing one of the most pressing healthcare challenges of our time. The Eurocentric canon remains the predominant focus of music education often excluding the role of music and experiences of Black individuals and people of color. This singular perspective creates an incomplete and inaccurate understanding of the comprehensive nature of music and the humans who create, perform, and engage with it. In this article, the author shares her experience as a Black music educator and her aspirations for a music profession that incorporates the full range of human music engagement and expression. (...) The paper begins with a reflection on W.E.B. DuBois’s double consciousness followed by an exploration of the nuances, complexities, contradictions, and beauty of being a Black educator in a primarily white field. Subsequently, the essay presents four conceptual principles for a reimagined, inclusive music education approach, drawing inspiration from Sylvia Wynter’s “new science of the Word.” These principles advocate retelling the music education narrative to incorporate historically marginalized voices, reorienting music education to be human-centered, embracing interdisciplinary approaches to view music teaching and learning, and acknowledging the power of music in uplifting the human condition. This literature-based study explores the potential of reimagining public service delivery in Africa, specifically focusing on Zimbabwe. It posits that embracing human-centric leadership is key to revitalising public institutions and fostering improved service delivery outcomes across the continent. Drawing upon established scholarly works and relevant case studies, the study dissects the limitations of the current bureaucratic and fragmented approaches to public service prevalent in many African countries. It then proposes a theoretical framework for human-centric leadership within the Zimbabwean context, (...) emphasising core principles like empathy, responsiveness, accountability, and active citizen engagement. This framework champions servant leadership, collaborative problem-solving with citizens, and the strategic utilisation of technology to bolster transparency and efficiency. By synthesising existing academic knowledge, best practices from other countries, and insights gleaned from Zimbabwe’s public sector stakeholders, the study culminates in a roadmap for implementing the proposed framework. It advocates for fostering a culture of human-centric leadership within Zimbabwe’s public service, with the goal of enhancing service delivery and fostering better outcomes for its citizens. The motivational force of pain is undeniable. But what pain commands us to do, how we might satisfy this command, and if our experience of pain is inherently linked to suffering are far murkier topics. This paper brings together empirical studies of pain reprocessing during advanced meditation, the rise of allostatic paradigms to account for biological self-regulation, and the philosophy of pain in the classical Sanskrit philosophical tradition of Pratyabhijñā Śaivism to argue that pain is an allostatic imperative to adapt (...) a part of one’s body. We theorize two components of an allostatic response, heterostatic and homeostatic, that work in tandem to address pain as an allostatic command. Homeostatic responses are error-corrective in that they seek to protect an organism by returning to a previously stable steady state. Heterostatic responses are anticipatory in that they seek to better prepare an organism to meet future challenges by proactively shifting to a new steady state. We note that an organism’s successful adaptation to its environment depends not just on error-correction, but also on anticipatory change. We theorize that a broad range of affect properly accompanies pain. We propose potential directions for empirically developing this model. We also note the possibility that this model could be extended to account for mental pain. (shrink)

This article aimed to explore issues of concern related to quarantine, its social consequences and influences, challenging its effects on human behavioral expressions during social isolation. The advent of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic impacted human lives in multifarious ways, threatening the meaning of normalcy. Quarantine, lockdown, isolation, and other terms reflecting conditions limiting human freedoms have become synonymous in importance to safety, security, and survival. To understand human defiance in the face of maintaining limited mobility during the COVID-19 (...) pandemic, reimagining situations of “unfreedoms” is explained as thinking of changes to inspire and improve the meaning of living lives meaningfully. During the pandemic, issues regarding healthcare practices and social behaviors focused much attention on interactive challenges that enhance ways to mitigate the spread of contagious diseases. Illuminating these issues, discussing concerns and highlighting recommendations to engage in alternative approaches and practices, heightens the declaration of efficiency of quarantine outcomes and effectiveness. This article explored the urgent need to reimagine theological education in Africa by contextualising identity, curriculum and pedagogy for urban ministry, with particular emphasis on Kampala, Uganda. By situating theological education within the historical trajectories of both the city and the church, it demonstrates that theological education in Uganda – especially in Kampala – has not evolved in isolation, but has been continually shaped by wider political, ecclesial and social dynamics. Drawing on research conducted across eight theological institutions in the (...) Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area, the article examines the current state of theological education. The study identified three critical thematic gaps: urban detachment, epistemological dependency and pedagogical rigidity. Nevertheless, it also highlights several notable innovations that reflect the adaptive capacity of theological institutions within Kampala’s urban context. In response to the identified challenges, the article proposes a roadmap for reimagining theological education at the Kampala Evangelical School of Theology. Contribution: This roadmap advocates for a repositioned institutional identity, the development of urban-oriented curricula, the adoption of problem-posing pedagogy and the establishment of an engaged research hub – each contributing to the formation, transformation and sustainability of innovative urban ministry praxes. Artists and designers working in the fields of generative and bio art frequently focus on designing speculative visions of how nature can be reimagined with the use of computational media and synthetic biology. Centered on the unique artistic strategies of reimagining life forms, this paper analyzes and compares a selection of generative software-based projects, in which artists are mimicking different natural phenomena and have the tendency to beautify nature and life, with bio art projects, where ethical considerations are prioritized (...) over other aspects of the work. Experimenting with software and producing code-based generative art can be a relatively accessible creative endeavor while working with synthetic biology requires more demanding and controlled workplace conditions and specialized equipment. Despite the differences in accessibility and usability, both fields of generative and bio art challenge the boundaries of contemporary artistic practice and research by mapping, provoking and contemplating the dramatic changes of life forms, in the era when living matter can be re-engineered into a new material capable of computing. For nearly a century, the Walt Disney Company has been constructing the world-famous Princess Line and enjoying a lengthy reign of female-centred, female-targeted media productions. Relying upon a problematically androcentric formula, these princess fairy tales advocate stereotypical femininity and romanticise imbalanced heterosexual relationships. Nevertheless, as gender progressive ideas become increasingly popular and accepted in the 21st century, Disney’s princess fantasies face repeated criticism and elicit concerns among modern-day audiences. To alter such a negative reputation and reinforce its control over the (...) media market, Disney turns its princess animations into live-action remakes and upgrades these classic stories and characters with feminist zeitgeists. Taken Mulan (1998) and its recent remake as the case study, this article identifies specific differences between the two princess protagonists and demonstrates that fourth-wave feminist discourses — the emphasis on choice, the construction of contemporary female ideals, and nuanced attitudes towards stereotypical masculinity — play a key role in reimagining Mulan into a more independent and empowered female warrior. This comparative textual analysis also examines particular flaws and biases contained in the fourth-wave feminist ideology, including the narrow definition of ‘aspirational women,’ the overemphasis on individual efforts, and the neglect of structural inequalities. Three decades after the dawn of the democratic dispensation, South Africa’s urban spaces continue to bear the brunt of the aftermath of colonial and apartheid past, that is, racialised exclusion, socio-economic inequality, and homelessness. These conditions have left many wounded and vulnerable, and some also left to die, as in the case of Luke 10:25–37. In the City of Tshwane, these realities continue to manifest through unemployed and homeless people who live under bridges, along riverbanks, in parks, and some have (...) to find refuge in established shelters or homes. This article seeks to address the question: How can a missional reading of Luke 10:25–37 reimagine ubuntu and human solidarity in the context of homelessness in Tshwane? Having conducted a Contextual Bible Study with approximately 25 homeless participants in the City of Tshwane, this article advances an argument that a decolonial missional reading of Luke 10:25–37 reinterprets ubuntu as an essential praxis that restores dignity through embodied solidarity and spatial, social, economic, and epistemic justice in urban contexts. Contribution: Through embodied solidarity, this article proposes a missional-decolonial praxis that empowers the agency of a church to be transformative, that is, to achieve spatial, social, economic, and epistemic justice for wounded, vulnerable, and homeless people in the City of Tshwane. This book re-evaluates New Left and Marxist texts from the 1980s, in order to explore problems facing the study of 'class' which have emerged within Australian and international theories. The author contrasts the popular ideas of Connell, Bourdieu and the 'Death of Class' thesis, with those of lesser known texts, concluding that no single definition can account for the various historical meanings of class. Instead, loosely following Castoriadis, the concept of class can best be understood as creatively imagined and institutionalised. (...) Paternoster proposes that class is best studied through historical phenomenology, which can be used to link political economy, cultural sociology and anthropological ethnographies. This approach allows the contributions of Marxist and New Left authors to be reintegrated with contemporary theories. Doing so highlights the significance of labour populism, while cautioning against the ahistorical applications of texts such as Boudieu's Distinction. Europe is in crisis: a crisis that no longer designates a moment of decision, a critical point between a before and an after, but a state, a permanent mode of being, a constant emergency. At this juncture of Europe, the aporia of (...) language confronts the aporia of history. We cannot speak, we must speak, we shall speak. As such, the contributions all engage with the idea that the question "what is Europe?" must measure up a series of questions, namely: what was it to be? What does it mean to initiate and sustain a project, such as Europe, if only at times, after the fact? The questions of internal and external borders, of homogeneity and coherence, identity and equality, legitimacy and rights, democracy and representation can only be raised insofar as the question of Europe, its destiny, and destination, is raised as a whole. With the increasing professionalization of clinical ethics, some hospitals and health systems utilize both ethics committees and professional clinical ethicists to address their ethics needs. Drawing upon historical critiques of ethics committees and their own experiences, the authors argue that, in ethics programs with one or more professional clinical ethicists, ethics committees should be dissolved when they fail to meet minimum standards of effectiveness. The authors outline several criteria for assessing effectiveness, describe the benefits of a model that places primary (...) responsibility for ethics work with professional clinical ethicists—the PCE-primary model, and offer suggestions for alternative ethics program structures that empower healthcare professionals to contribute to ethics work in ways more tailored to their strengths and skills while minimizing the shortcomings of ethics committees. British equality law protections for sex and gender reassignment have grown fraught as activists tussle over legal and social categories of gender, gender transitioning, and sex. This article considers the future of gender-related equality protections in relation to ‘decertification’—an imagined reform that would detach sex and gender from legal personhood. One criticism of decertification is that de-formalising gender membership would undermine equality law protections. This article explores how gender-based equality law could operate in conditions of decertification, drawing on legal thoughtways (...) developed for two other protected characteristics in equality law—religion and belief, and disability—to explore the legal responses and imaginaries that these two grounds make available. Religious equality law focuses on beliefs, communities, and practices, deemed to be stable, multivarious, and subject to deep personal commitment. Disability equality law focuses on embodied disadvantage, approached as social, relational, and fluctuating. While these two equality frameworks have considerable limitations, they offer legal thoughtways for gender oriented to both its hierarchies and its expression, including as disavowal. (shrink)

As business ethics is grappling with criticisms of its relevance for ethical practice, it may find perspective and direction in various conceptions of ethos. While ‘ethics’ is rooted in ‘ethos’, a term with a long and rich history of interdisciplinary research, conceptions of ethos are so far scarcely discussed in business ethics. The purpose of this conceptual article is to explore the potential of a pivot towards business ethics as an ethos-driven practice, drawing on John Dewey’s work. First, it introduces (...) four conceptions of ethos from interdisciplinary research and explores their varied resonance in business ethics. Second, it offers a unified conception of ethos that builds on John Dewey’s approach to economics, moral life and ethics, particularly on his understanding of habits and forms of valuation. It is then argued that understanding ethos in terms of ‘valued modes of embedded, embodied and associational conduct’ encourages business ethics to engage in the intelligent, practical and meaningful reconstruction of evolving business practices. The article concludes that an ‘ ethotical turn’ for business ethics would not only invigorate practical, corporeal and environmental perspectives but also open the field to interdisciplinary insights and ideas. This article introduces Writing-With as a relational ethical orientation in qualitative inquiry, one that foregrounds presence, attunement, and responsibility in the act of writing. Rather than addressing research ethics as a matter of procedural compliance or misconduct prevention, we attend to the subtle, everyday decisions researchers make as they interpret, cite, paraphrase, and co-author. These quiet moments, often unspoken, unmeasured, are where ethics becomes lived. Through reflexive engagement with our own writing practices, we explore how Writing-With invites a shift from (...) rules to relations, from surveillance to care. Writing becomes not only a site of knowledge production but a practice of ethical becoming, responsive, situated, and open to the tensions it carries. This stance does not replace existing frameworks of research integrity, but it expands them by insisting that how we write is inseparable from how we relate. (shrink)

Posthuman affirmative ethics relies upon a fluid, nomadic conception of the ethical subject who develops affective, material and immaterial connections to multiple others. Our purpose in this paper is to consider what posthuman affirmative business ethics would look like, and to reflect on the shift in thinking and practice this would involve. The need for a revised understanding of human–animal relations in business ethics is amplified by crises such as climate change and pandemics that are related to ecologically destructive business (...) practices such as factory farming. In this analysis, we use feminist speculative fiction as a resource for reimagination and posthuman ethical thinking. By focusing on three ethical movements experienced by a central character named Toby in Margaret Atwood’s MaddAddam trilogy, we show how she is continually becoming through affective, embodied encounters with human and nonhuman others. In the discussion, we consider the vulnerability that arises from openness to affect which engenders heightened response-ability to and with, rather than for, multiple others. This expanded concept of subjectivity enables a more relational understanding of equality that is urgently needed in order to respond affirmatively to posthuman futures. (shrink)
