The paper continues the ontomathematical investigation of Postmodernity as involving the third dimension of human experience after Hegel, Marx, and Marxism - Leninism. “Language” instead of “time” or “development” is its new name, which does not call for social revolutions any more. The doctrines of Peirce, Wittgenstein (both “Tractatus” and “Philosophical Investigation”), Heidegger (before and after “die Kehre”), Gadamer’s hermeneutics and its relation to Heidegger’s hermeneutics, Rorty, Derrida, the philosophical interpretation of Umberto Eco’s “The Name of the Rose” are (...) considered to search for its “mysterious name”, that of the third dimension of human experience. Ontomathematics allows for them to be reinterpreted as the postmodern introduction of the third dimension of human experience as language, semiotics or “sign”. The conclusion conjectures that mathematics can be reinterpreted as “consistent semiotics” obeying universal Boolean syntax for the two-dimensional space of human experience versus the three-dimensional “generalized mathematics” of semiotics as ontomathematics. The first paper of a series about the rigorous and ontomathematical definition of postmodernity reinterprets Hegel's dialectics and dialectic logic. His "synthesis", "change", "development", "time" is represented as the third dimension of Hilbert space where the two others correspond to the initial and final state of whether developing "idea" or changing "object" (after Marx's "dialectical/ historical materialism") generating a complete description of reality therefore excluding any hidden variables in principle: after the Kochen-Specker theorem (1967) or forcing a unique probability (...) measure after the Gleason theorem (1957). That approach is obviously geometric rather than logical, thus rather ontomathematical than ontological. Speaking loosely, dialectic logic is not logic in a formal sense: it means only the following negative result after the transition from two-to three-dimensional Hilbert space. The orthomodular lattice of subspaces (projective operators) allowing for a local (i.e., depending on a locally defined context of measurement) Boolean lattice being omnipresently homomorphic (i.e., independent of any locally defined context of measurement) in the two-dimensional case for the Hilbert meta-space of human experience, however, does not allow the same (i.e., both local and universal) Boolean lattice after complementing it by the third dimension of "time", "synthesis", "development", etc. So, dialectic logic is only the "antithesis" of classical logic, but their "synthesis" is not (and fundamentally cannot be) logical, but only geometrical (furthermore originating from Hegel's own understanding of "synthesis": to generate a new quality). Dialectical logic is neither "ontology of change", nor "ontology of time", nor "ontology of contradiction": it is ontomathematics implied by the third dimension, thus beyond logic, but within geometry. It is rather "geometry of reality" than "logic of reality" and quantum mechanics rather than Marx's materialism is what it needs. Speaking loosely, reality starts from the third dimension after the Kochen-Specker and Gleason theorems. Then, Postmodernity versus Modernity can be rigorously and mathematically defined to replace the fundamental metapostulate about the two-dimensionality (e.g., "mindbody"; "objectsubject"; "Self environment"; etc.) of human experience with its three-dimensionality. As that was in fact realized for the first time by Hegel (in a proper philosophical insight since quantum mechanics did not exist in his age), he can be reasonably called the "first postmodern philosopher". The USSR and other socialistic countries' history and their "Marxism-Leninism" provide numerous examples (or counterexamples) for that ontomathematical interpretation of dialectics. (shrink)

Parting with traditional society, modernity represents the triumph of power-knowledge, the divorce between spheres of culture, the global social relations, the new institutions, the change in the understanding of space-time relations, the cult of the new, and the modernization process. While preserving (...) the institutional set of modernity, the postmodern period casts into doubt the basic thought foundations of classical modernity. Zygmunt Bauman wrote tirelessly on the ever-changing world that we live in, lucidly analysing our contemporary times in an intelligent and insightful manner in both oral and written discourses where the topics ranged from Holocaust reflections, modernity and postmodernity, urban and social liquidity and mobility, and utopia and dystopia, to mention but a few. In his astute observations Bauman paints an often sombre and depressing picture of society and the role we play in it. Writing at length on modernity (...) and postmodernity (the latter dependent on the former for its existence), the Polish sociologist, who was impressively prolific during his lengthy career at the University of Leeds, presents us with a world in flux, one in which citizens likened to hunters lead an increasingly solitary and rootless existence in the name of staunch individualism while, all along, they seemingly push faster and increasingly desperately into an uncertain future. In Bauman’s many accounts, these members, or denizens, of the postmodern habitat lead an ambivalent existence in an apparent utopia that is far from as utopic as one would have hoped for. In Anglo‐American Postmodernity I call attention to recent intellectual shifts in epistemology (from foundationalism to holism), philosophy of language (from reference to use), and metaphysics (from reductionism to nonreductionism), and pursue the consequences of these changes for science, theology, and ethics. Wesley Robbins criticizes the book for making overly optimistic claims for the intellectual status of theology; Philip Clayton criticizes it for giving up the quest for general standards of rational progress. Hegel's critique of Schleiermacher as the embodiment of two currents of romantic irony: empiricist skepticism (Schlegel) and feeling (Novalis), are explicitly presented as "absolute presupposition of our time". The article associates these "presuppositions" with features of postmodernity, as presented by Lyotard. Thus, the Hegelian critique of Schleiermacher might be read as a critique of postmodernity.

When Freud wrote his classic Civilization and its Discontents, he was concerned with repression. Modern civilization depends upon the constraint of impulse, the limiting of self expression. Today, in the time of modernity, Bauman argues, Freud's analysis no longer holds good, if it ever did. The regulation of desire turns from an irritating necessity into an assault against individual freedom. In the postmodern era, the liberty of the individual is the overriding value, the criterion in terms of which all social (...) rules and regulations are assessed. Postmodernity is governed by the 'will to happiness': the result, however, is a sacrificing of security. The most prominent anxieties in our society today, Bauman shows, derive from the removal of security. The world is experienced as overwhelmingly uncertain, uncontrollable and frightening. Totalitarian politics frightened by its awesome power; the new social disorder frightens by its lack of consistency and direction. The very pursuit of individual happiness corrupts and undermines those systems of authority needed for a stable life. This book builds imaginatively upon Bauman's earlier contributions to social theory. It consolidates his reputation as the interpreter of postmodernity. Sketching a new portrait of the human self in this thought-provoking book, leading American philosopher Calvin O. Schrag challenges bleak deconstructionist and postmodernist views of the self as something ceaselessly changing, without origin or purpose. Discussing the self in new vocabulary, he depicts an action-oriented self defined by the ways in which it communicates. The self, says Schrag, is open to understanding through its discourse, its actions, its being with other selves, and its experience of transcendence. In his discussion, Schrag (...) responds critically to both modernists and postmodernists, avoiding what he calls the modernists' overdetermination of unity and identity and the postmodernists' self-enervating pluralism. He agrees with postmodernist attacks on both the classical theory of the self as a metaphysical substance and the modern epistemological construal of the self as transparent mind, yet he maintains that jettisoning the self as understood in these terms does not mean jettisoning it altogether. The self as subject is not dead, nor are the constitutive features of self-formation and self-understanding. In addressing the role of culture in the dynamics of self-formation, the author offers a critique of Max Weber's and Jürgen Habermas's view of modernity as a radical differentiation of three cultural spheres: science, morality, and art; he adds religion as a legitimate fourth cultural sphere. The essay is designed to investigate the foundations of the conjunction of modern/postmodern premises that the world is a construct of discourses and their power. Such premises require the exclusion of the world of perception, including the lived world, and the appearance of the modern subject and its specific interpretation of reality. The question is as follows: how must the modern subject access such reality when it is assumed that such reality is not accessible to direct, perceptual intuition? The aim of this article is to show clearly what the terms “object” and “objectivity” as used over the centuries of modern philosophy — from the time of Descartes down to the time of Wittgenstein and Husserl, i.e., from early modern Rationalism and Empiricism to late modern Phenomenology and Analytic philosophy — have obscured. Objectivity, far from being “the ability to consider or represent facts, information, etc., without being influenced by personal feelings or opinions; impartiality; detachment,” as the OED would (...) have it, is fundamentally the condition of occupying the position of the significate in a triadic relation the foreground element of which is a sign vehicle conveying that significate to or for some third. Simply put, an “object” is a significate, a fact that common usage has come to obscure by sedimenting the influence of modern philosophy's reversal of the meaning of the terms “subjective” and “objective,” where the former has come to signify “private opinion” in contrast to “the way things are.” But this sedimentation to the level of common usage of modern solipsistic epistemology is precisely a usage that semiotic analysis of the linguistic sign overcomes, showing that in the expression “object signified” the qualification “signified” is redundant, for an object is nothing other than something signified! Thus “significate,” a term that modern dictionary makers resist, says clearly what the term “object” says obscurely; and a great deal of mischief in philosophy over the centuries after Descartes has been the result of this distinctively modern obscurantism in philosophy. It has become an intellectual commonplace to claim that we have entered the era of 'postmodernity'. Three themes are embraced in this claim the poststructurist critique by Foucault, Derrida and others of the philosophical heritage of the Enlightenment the supposed impasse of High Modern art and its replacement by new artistic forms and the alleged emergence of 'post-industrial' societies whose structures are beyond the ken of Marx and other theorists of industrial capitalism. Against Postmodernism takes issue with all these (...) themes. It challenges the idealist irrationalism of post-structuralism. It questions the existence of any radical break separating allegedly Postmodern from Modern art. And it denies that recent socio-economic developments represent any fundamental shift from classical patterns of capital accumulation. Drawing on philosophy and history, Against Postmodernism takes issue also with some of the most forthright critics of postmodernism -- Jurgen Habermas and Fredric Jameson, for example. But it is most distinctive in that it offers a historical reading of the theories of such currently fashionable thinkers as Baudrillard and Lyotard. Postmodernism, Alex Callinios argues, reflects the disappointed revolutionary generation of '68, and the incorporation of many of its members into the porfessional and managerial 'new middle class'.
