    Complex superpositions of degenerate hydrogen wavefunctions for the n th energy level can possess zero lines (phase singularities) in the form of knots and links. A recipe is given for constructing any torus knot. The simplest cases are constructed explicitly: the elementary link, requiring n≥6, and the trefoil knot, requiring n≥7. The knots are threaded by multistranded twisted chains of zeros. Some speculations about knots in general complex quantum energy eigenfunctions are presented.

    We review some of the progress made in the past 27 years in understanding the group theoretic and path integral aspects of the hydrogen atom. The group theoretic development was triggered by A. O. Barut who suggested to me the search for a dynamical group larger than SO(4). In this way he became indirectly responsible also for important recent path integral developments.

    This paper develops a structural and ontological account of development understood as the persistence of an unresolved remainder. A structure develops only insofar as it sustains a locus of continuation—a growth front—through which further extension remains possible. When all relevant degrees of freedom are internally compensated, development is suspended and the structure enters a regime of local closure.
