Looking the contemporary climate emergency in the eye without fantasy compels, for a rampaging species such as ours, a full halt: what does it really mean to be human? Have we always been self-destructive and thus in need of something like a heretofore unattainable (much less unimaginable) revolution? Or did we once know the mutualism inherent in eco-systemic viability over long stretches of time that allowed both human and more-than-human flourishing in a co-communion simultaneously magnificent, but also uncompromising in its (...) enforcements of limits? In exploring such, the résumé of chapter topics herein pursued will wantonly “skip”—with indigenously-provoked curiosity and biblically-exercised exuberance—across seemingly unrelated subjects, ranging from mountains to metals, mules to muck, menhirs to mites. But exercising the writing unrelentingly will be this concern for limitation! How to get our species to stop assuming its supremacy and recommit to a reciprocity with the more-than-human world that might actually have a future? Organizing the inquest here is the trope and reality of monstrosity. How to approach the world of plants and animals, waters and minerals, peaks and winds as a domain of peers and teachers and even “elders” underscoring the fact that monstrosity is our condition, whether as a now outsized species-terror ravaging all else on the planet and provoking the biosphere to respond in kind, or by recovering our ancestral role as symbiotically embedded collaborator with forces larger than our formulas (such as oceans) and more minutely potent than our microscopes (like viruses)? Patent for the “Christian” leanings of the effort—piqued, schooled, and downsized by indigenous challenge—will be the way these “monster agencies” intersect with the tradition’s fascination with angels both beneficent and “fallen”—as Messengers elaborating wisdom or as powers engendering destruction. In the mix the introductory sketch organizes the venture as “Monsters we need to meet” as well as “Monsters we have mobilized” across many millennia as companions, likewise positing as provocation the idea of monsters musing through us, mentoring all around us, and meddling with us—all “from without” in origin and aim, serving an intention mysterious and beyond our comprehension, but ineluctably involving us (and ultimately “eating” us!), whether or not we would cooperate in kind. Due to its high degree of complexity and its historical nature, evolutionary biology has been traditionally portrayed as a messy science. According to the supporters of such a view, evolutionary biology would be unable to formulate laws and robust theories, instead just delivering coherent narratives and local models. In this article, our aim is to challenge this view by showing how the Price equation can work as the core of a general theoretical framework for evolutionary phenomena. To support this claim, (...) we outline some unnoticed structural similarities between physical theories and evolutionary biology. More specifically, we shall argue that the Price equation, in the same way as fundamental formalisms in physics, can serve as a heuristic principle to formulate and systematise different theories and models in evolutionary biology. In Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature (PMN) Rorty opposes representationalism about mind and language, and interprets Davidson as an ally. Yet Davidson insists that language and thought depend on speakers taking themselves to be subject to an objective standard of correctness, beyond themselves. Isn’t this mirroring, in some reasonable reading of Rorty’s metaphor? Yes, in my view, and there is more of a tension between PMN and Davidson than Rorty realises. But pragmatists can regard this objective standard as (...) an artefact of our own linguistic practices, rather than as a norm imposed by the world in some stronger sense. That great apes are the only primates to recognise their reflections is often taken to show that they are self-aware—however, there has been much recent debate about whether the self-awareness in question is psychological or bodily self-awareness. This paper argues that whilst self-recognition does not require psychological self-awareness, to claim that it requires only bodily self-awareness would leave something out. That is that self-recognition requires ‘objective self-awareness’—the capacity for first person thoughts like ‘that's me’, which involve self-identification and so are (...) vulnerable to error through misidentification. This objective self-awareness is distinct from bodily or psychological self-awareness, requires cognitive sophistication and provides the beginnings of a more conceptual self-representation which might play a role in planning, mental time travel and theory of mind. The reverse correlation (RC) method has been widely used, because it allows visualization of mental representations without a priori assumptions about relevant dimensions. We employed the RC method to visualize mental representations of self and examined their relationships with traits related to self-image. For this purpose, 110 participants (70 women) performed a two-image forced choice RC task to generate a classification image of self (self-CI). Participants perceived their self-CIs as bearing a stronger resemblance to themselves than did CIs of others (...) (filler-CIs). Valence ratings of participants who performed the RC task (RC sample) and of 30 independent raters both showed positive correlations with self-esteem, explicit self-evaluation, and extraversion. Moreover, valence ratings of independent raters were negatively correlated with social anxiety symptoms. On the other hand, valence ratings of the RC sample and independent raters were not correlated with depression symptoms, trait anxiety, or social desirability. The results imply that mental representations of self can be properly visualized by using the RC method. (shrink)

In the late eleventh century grammar became an analytical rather than an exegetical discipline under the impetus of the new theology. Under the impetus of Arab learning the ancient sciences were reshaped according to the norms of Aristotle’s Analytics, and developed within a structure of speculative sciences beginning with grammar and culminating in theology. Though the modistae acknowledge Aristotle, (...) Donatus, Priscian and the Arab commentators, their roots also lie in Augustine and Boethius, and they took as much from their scholastic contemporaries as they gave them. This book traces the genesis of a grammar which communicated freely with other speculative sciences, shared their structures and methods, and affirmed its own individuality by defining its object as the causes of language. Arthur Schopenhauer’s Mirror: the Will, the Suffering, the Compassion as Philosophical Challenges. In philosophy, the celebration of Arthur Schopenhauer has already ended. Only the last year was anniversary (of his birth and of the publication of the first volume of The World as Will and Representation), but the importance of this non-conformist creator is never superfluous to highlight. In this article, there is, certainly, a very limited/selective focus on the thinking of Schopenhauer, and no biographical approach: the goal is (...) only to stress two aspects of his philosophy in their logic. Schopenhauer was an enthusiastic Kantian: first of all, by taking over his maestro’s seminal paradigm, the constructivism (that does not pertain only to the theory of knowledge, but marks the entire existence analysed at different philosophical levels). Secondly, by the ethical focus and accent, continuing Kant’s exceptional emphasis of the ultimate reason of the tableau of the world, the human reason and its power to treat the others in a moral manner. And certainly, Schopenhauer was not an epigone, but a creator, using and at the same time giving other content to the Kantian form of ethical revolution. Schopenhauer had, obviously, contradictory ideas – as that between his constructivism and his metaphysical treatment of the will, i. e. as the only principle explaining the world – and also with disputable significance, including for the actual life and thinking. But he had a bad publicity from the dominant philosophy – namely, some of his ideas (as that of the moral of compassion) were, and still are, absolutely ignored, while other ones were simplified or transformed in the conception of Schopenhauer, reducing this one to some ideas out of context – and even nowadays this tradition is dominant. And it’s pity, because Schopenhauer’s philosophy was and represented a dramatic moment in the history of the 19th century thinking and culture: as it is a strange mirror for the present much graver situation. In order to critique the present it’s not necessary to do it from Schopenhauer’s perspective. However, just his contradictory ideas and pathetic accent on compassion show better than ever that neither philosophy – as theoretical position – nor the urging for moral activism are more than vox clamantis in deserto: if the historical facts, which include this urging and the spring of thinking but are not confined to them, are missing. This article examines crowds, leaders, and media after the 1979 Revolution of Iran. It focuses on media that contests hegemonic power by acting as a “guide” for an otherwise “leaderless movement,” especially in contexts where conventional “guides” are illegitimate or absent. It argues that such media reveals the partisan reality of political order obscured by the myth of leadership, the idea that the presence of a leader implies a political order. I focus on International Women’s Day 1979 when crowds protesting (...) the Ayatollah Khomeini’s decision to enforce the mandatory veil were caught in a paradox: as subjects of history and objects of representation. With focus on the non-partisan newspaper _Ayandegan_, the article shows how the crowds, objects of representation, became political subjects, as potential guides. Despite its efforts to remain neutral, _Ayandegan_ became partisan when it unwittingly challenged the “charismatic leader” by giving presence to the partisan crowds. The mediated relation between leader and led on 8 March 1979 and after is instructive for our understanding of the role media can play in leaderless movements. (shrink)

In this article the mirror is considered as a model of the adequacy of the world and mind, which to some extent dominated the European history of ideas. This idea of relationship and mutual perception in the field of intersubjectivity is problematic enough when the concrete collision of two corporeal entities, two personalities as two bodies, is at stake. According to author, the metaphor of the mirror serves in the history of culture as an analog of the relationship (...) of a person to himself, to others, to the world, thereby placing the topic of anthropology, the human self and worldview at the center of the research. In the author's view, the mirror metaphor is not so much about how strong the mirror metaphor is in this context, but primarily about the social limit of physical perception reflexes. The other person's social reflection on us contains a personal dimension that is equivalent to matching mutual reflections, including the rejection of contact with each other. The mirror can only confirm the psychophysical side of my being, while the other person mirrors my social side behind this side, where he also has the ability through his subjectivity and spontaneity to deny me in the mirror image, i.e. to deny me any recognition. The author describes various asocial forms of view that refuse to allow symmetry between us and others with reference to the metaphorical theories of Ralf Konersmann and Hans Blumenberg. Using metaphor we can address pre-conceptual expectations, needs, and experiences that conceptual language does not have access to. (shrink)

Feibleman accuses positivists and analysts of looking at the mirror but not at the world of things and ideas which Russell and Wittgenstein saw in it; they therefore ignore the presuppositions of logical inquiry while inconsistently using this inquiry to scourge metaphysics.
