An argument for the abolition of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and a step into the wild blue yonder – i.e., beyond Open Access (OA) and Creative Commons (CC) protocols. The “Introduction,” prior to “Paralogisms for Artist-scholars” utilizes an almost Pater-esque aesthetic deployment of time-senses and verb tenses that also resembles the doubled subjective states of Derridean exposition, but actually opens on to theologically inflected re-considerations of the generative nature of gramma.

This publication offers the first critical edition of John Buridan’s second set of questions on Aristotle's “De generatione et corruptione”. The edition was made by Michiel Streijger, Paul Bakker and Hans Thijssen. First published as a printed book in 2010, the publication has been converted to open access with the CC BY-NC-ND license as of September 2023.

The issue of trust has increasingly attracted attention in the business ethics literature. Our aim is to contribute further to this literature by examining how the use of the carbon copy function in email communication influences felt trust. We develop the argument that the use of cc enhances transparency—representing an important characteristic of workplace ethics—and hence promotes trust. We further argue that a downside of the cc option may be that it can also be experienced as a control mechanism, which (...) may therefore negatively affect trust. The results of our first study showed that the use of cc indeed enhances perceived transparency, but at the same time also leads to the experience of increased control. Building upon this insight, the findings of five subsequent studies consistently revealed that the use of cc negatively influences felt trust. More precisely, employees felt trusted the least when the supervisor was always included in cc. This effect on felt trust also negatively influenced how trustworthy the organizational climate was perceived. We further replicated these results in two field surveys, which showed that the negative effect of cc on felt trust lowered perceptions of psychological safety and contributed to a culture of fear. Taken together, our findings suggest that when transparency in email communications is experienced as a control mechanism, its use is perceived as unethical, rather than as ethical. Implications and recommendations for future business ethics research are discussed. (shrink)

Wie sieht es beim Thema Treibhausgase und Erderwärmung mit Technofixen aus? Die Erderwärmung könnte man reduzieren, indem man die Sonne „aussperrt“. Treibhausgasemissionen kann man prinzipiell „einfangen“ und dauerhaft „wegsperren“. Schließlich gibt es ja auch noch die vergleichsweise nahezu klimaneutrale Atomenergie. Sind das ernsthafte Optionen und wie sind diese Technologien zu bewerten?

This article describes how cc. 39 and 37 create distinct tones of voice and use them to preclude the social pretensions of Egnatius in different spheres. The style of c. 39, markedly oratorical—and non-Catullan—in the syntax of its opening lines, develops into the voice of a respectable senex by way of archaisms of vocabulary and syntax and is capped by a figure of humor otherwise absent from the polymetrics, the apologus. The style thus creates a voice perfectly suited to chastise (...) Egnatius' social ineptitudes and, more importantly, constitutes on the verbal level an embodiment of the standards of the urban elite. Catullus thus illustrates to Egnatius that a subtle system of social gestures can be learned - something which Egnatius, for all his apparent pretensions to social prominence, manifestly has not grasped, marred as he is by the habit of grinning inappropriately. C. 37, which ends with an attack on the same Egnatius, is far different in tone, commingling tokens of artfulness with vulgarity and forcefulness. That mixed style exercises ironic decorum towards Lesbia's lovers, who are themselves an oddly mixed group, well-off on the one hand, but "backstreet adulterers" on the other. But the two tones of voice, and indeed the two groups of lovers, also embody the paradoxes of the Roman construction of stylish behavior, which could be represented as elegant dalliance or reprehensible vice. Inasmuch as Egnatius' fashion affectations, ridiculed at the poem's end, fail to qualify him for the ranks of Lesbia's lovers, he is represented as outside sophisticated society, however it be constructed. In concert the two poems utterly derail Egnatius' social pretensions: c. 39 as it were outflanks him on the "right," barring him from respectable society, and c. 37 outflanks him on the "left," barring him from the "jet set.". In this chapter, we argue that functional connectivity in the human brain is critical for the performance of cognitive processes, particularly consciousness, and its attendant phenomenology of subjective experience. We describe MEG (magnetoencephalography) and EEG (electroencephalography) work on the dynamics of functional connectivity in thalamocortical (TC), cortico-cortical (CC), and cortico-thalamic (CT) circuits, particularly emphasizing synchronization in various frequency bands. We then describe the cognitive consequences of various disruptions in these dynamics, from slight partial slowing, through severe slowing and selective loss, (...) to the complete loss of functional network dynamics that can occur in traumatic brain injury. These consequences range from slight cognitive deficits through deficits that necessitate neurological or psychiatric treatment, to complete loss of consciousness and sometimes to paradoxical states such as “free-running cortex.”. Der erste Band der DSKE enthält Kierkegaards Journale und Aufzeichnungen der Jahre 1835-1839 und beruht auf der historisch-kritischen dänischen Neuausgabe. Die Texte der von Kierkegaard mit AA, BB, CC und DD gekennzeichneten Journale zeigen die Vielfalt der Interessen und Studien, die Kierkegaard in jenen Jahren, also zu Beginn seiner formativen Periode, verfolgt. Die von autobiographischen Notizen, literarisch-ästhetischen Studien und Entwürfen bis hin zu philosophischen und theologischen Erörterungen reichenden Aufzeichnungen erlauben einen einzigartigen Einblick in die Werkstatt Kierkegaards und damit in die (...) Textgenese selbst. Die Erschließung dieser Aufzeichnungen, die teils privater Natur sind, teils im Hinblick auf eine spätere Veröffentlichung entstanden oder bewahrt wurden, ist häufig unerlässlich für die angemessene Interpretation auch der veröffentlichten Werke. Eine Kierkegaards Intellektualität, Religiosität und poetischer Sprachkraft Genüge tuende Übersetzung der Journale und Aufzeichnungen ist nicht nur Zeichen der ungebrochenen Aktualität Kierkegaards für Theologie, Philosophie, Psychologie und Ästhetik, sondern auch die Grundlage für ein neues und tieferes Verständnis seines Gesamtwerkes, das auf einer zuverlässigen Textgrundlage basiert. The primary factors influencing the use of the Citizen Charter (CC) in Bangladesh's Union Parishads (UPs) are discussed in this section. As a way to make local governments more responsible and speed up their service delivery, it weighs the pros and cons. Some of the most important things that affect how well the CC works are political will, management skill, socio-economic level, knowledge, and financial means. These are all based on research from the field. The results show that the CC (...) cannot be fully put into place because the government and the people who work for it do not have enough political will or management skills. This is why many leaders fail to address or fulfil their needs. The study also shows that differences in socio-economic status lessen the effects of the CC. This is because people from lower socio-economic groups may not have the means or knowledge to participate in and benefit from it. It is harder for the CC to improve service delivery because not enough people are aware of it, and there are insufficient funds, especially for projects related to the CC. This is because not having enough money stops attempts that are needed to get people involved and raise awareness. To address these issues, the chapter emphasises the importance of implementing specific measures, including public marketing programmes, training classes, and sufficient funding. It says that getting rid of these structural problems will help the CC reach its full potential as a way for the government to be open, flexible, and include everyone. This will make towns stronger and more active, and it will also improve the services that are given. (shrink)

The rapid development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and the increasing availability of platforms that leverage its creative potential can significantly impact the production of contributions intended for a scientific journal. For this reason, Salesianum is among the first academic journals to adopt a specific Policy regarding the use of AI.

The risk posed by anthropogenic climate change is generally accepted, and the challenge we face to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to a tolerable limit cannot be underestimated. Reducing GHG emissions can be achieved either by producing less GHG to begin with or by emitting less GHG into the atmosphere. One carbon mitigation technology with large potential for capturing carbon dioxide at the point source of emissions is carbon capture and storage (CCS). However, the merits of CCS have been questioned, (...) both on practical and ethical grounds. While the practical concerns have already received substantial attention, the ethical concerns still demand further consideration. This article aims to respond to this deficit by reviewing the critical ethical challenges raised by CCS as a possible tool in a climate mitigation strategy and argues that the urgency stemming from climate change underpins many of the concerns raised by CCS. Rooted in theory of planned behavior (TPB) supplemented with self-determination theory (SDT), this study explores determinants of willingness to receive and provide resources in Europe's non-remunerated and remunerated collaborative consumption (CC). The exploration was conducted within a single research model by assessing the role of (a) TPB constructs reflecting attitude towards participation in CC, perceived social pressure to engage, and perceived level of difficulty that engagement requires and (b) SDT constructs of environmental, social, and economic motives for participation. The data (...) were collected through an online questionnaire, and the structural relationships were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Willingness to consume in non-remunerated and remunerated CC was positively directly influenced by social pressure to engage in CC and participation being perceived as pleasant, negatively by the level of difficulty that engagement requires, as well as positively indirectly influenced by environmental concern and sociability. Additionally, environmental concern had positive direct effect on willingness to consume only in the remunerated context. Willingness to provide in non-remunerated CC was positively directly influenced by perceiving participation as pleasant and indirectly by environmental concern and sociability. Resource provision in remunerated CC was not explained by any of the determinants. (shrink)

Recent discussions on corporate citizenship highlight the new political role of corporations in society by arguing that corporations increasingly act as quasi-governmental actors and take on what hitherto had originally been governmental tasks. By examining political and sociological citizenship theories, the authors show that such a corporate engagement can be explained by a changing conception of corporate citizens from corporate bourgeois to corporate citoyen. As an intermediate actor in society, the corporate citoyen assumes co-responsibilities for social and civic affairs and (...) actively collaborates with fellow citizens beyond governmental regulation. This change raises the question of how such corporate civic engagement can be aligned with public policy regulations and how corporate activities can be integrated into the democratic regime. To clarify the mode of CC contributions to society, the authors will apply the tenet of subsidiarity as a governing principle which allows for specifying corporations’ tasks as intermediate actors in society. By referring to the renewed European Union strategy for Corporate Social Responsibility, the authors show how such a subsidiary corporate-governmental task-sharing can be organized. (shrink)

This paper reinterprets and expands upon Judgemental Philosophy framework, particularly the concept of the Judgemental Triad (Constructivity, Coherence, Resonance). It centrally argues that Resonance is not merely a resultant characteristic or structural element of judgement, but a fundamental driving force that impels individuals to actively construct new meaning (Constructivity) and integrate it into more comprehensive systems of Coherence. From this perspective, the occurrence and resolution of the "r-cc gap" internally, along with the role of curiosity, are re-illuminated as dynamic explorations (...) toward new Constructivity and Coherence. The problem of distinguishing illusion from reality is also understood as a complex facet of this pursuit, where, as an aspect of Resonance failure, illusion can sometimes involve the subject's active choice of 'conscious compromise' or 'voluntary self-deception' in response to practical constraints or internal needs. Furthermore, this paper analyzes how the driving force of Resonance extends beyond the individual's internal world, through intersubjective relations (S9: Intersubjective Resonance), to co-construct social meaning and Coherence. Ultimately, this culminates in the formation of social norms (S10: Normative Codification & Transmission) as an expression of a collective, resonant desire to institutionalize the most comprehensive forms of Constructivity and Coherence. Finally, the paper considers the epistemological implications of this expanded discussion for questions concerning the ultimate foundation of our experienced reality, such as the "brain in a vat" hypothesis, contending that meaningful reality is a dynamic process constituted and sustained through the incessant interplay of multi-layered Constructivity, Coherence, and lived Resonance. Preston's (2011) challenge to the moral presumption against geoengineering is applied to carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) in Scotland, United Kingdom. Qualitative data is analysed to assess if and how Preston's arguments play out in practice. We argue that the concepts of ‘lesser evil’ and prioritising human well-being over non-interference in natural processes do bring different value positions together in support of CCS, but that not all people see short-term carbon abatement as the ‘least worst’ option or a suitable (...) way to prioritise human well-being. An enduring divide separates the biomedical account of disease from the phenomenological understanding of illness. In this article, I develop a two-level counterfactual model that treats these domains as parallel and formally comparable modes of reasoning: the Clinical Counterfactual (CC) for causal hypotheses and the Experiential Counterfactual (EC) for goal-directed patient claims. Grounded in Biostatistical Theory and operationalized through Homeostatic Property Cluster theory, the framework fixes background conditions for counterfactual assessment and anchors diagnosis in causal–mechanistic disruption rather than population averages (...) alone. An Integration Condition evaluates coherence between levels, and an intervention is favored only if at least one admissible scenario exists in which removing the dysfunction resolves the symptom and enables the realization of the patient’s valued activity. Practically, I outline a structured documentation workflow in which CCs and ECs are articulated in parallel and linked by a deviation-analysis protocol that is activated when the two levels diverge. The protocol treats disagreement as diagnostically informative, prompting focused re-examination of causal assumptions, value priorities, and evidential gaps. Conceptually, the framework avoids reducing reasons to causes. It employs counterfactual difference-making as a shared analytical language while preserving distinct explanatory roles at each level. Unlike patient-centered outcome approaches that assess values mainly post hoc, this model integrates patient goals ex ante into causal reasoning itself, with patient-reported outcomes serving as downstream validation rather than as the integrative glue. The result is a disciplined and transparent heuristic for clinical reasoning, particularly under conditions of uncertainty, contestation, and incomplete knowledge, that renders causal inferences, patient goals, and normative assumptions explicit and mutually testable.
