Depth Without Withdrawal: Quantum Field Theory and the Ontology of Genuine Disclosure

Abstract

Prevailing interpretations of Quantum Field Theory face a persistent tension: if physical entities genuinely enter into interactions, their reality seems reducible to those interactions, collapsing into naive materialism or instrumentalism. If their reality exceeds every interaction, they appear to withdraw from genuine contact, as maintained by the withdrawal thesis of Object-Oriented Ontology. This paper argues that the apparent opposition rests on a shared assumption, namely that inexhaustibility requires inaccessibility. The central claim is that QFT reveals ontological depth without requiring ontological withdrawal. Reality exceeds every disclosure not because it lies hidden behind disclosure, but because disclosure is always genuine yet non-exhaustive. Drawing on Participatory Non-Reductionist Realism, I argue that QFT describes a world of genuine participatory encounters among irreducibly distinct entities whose actuality exceeds every interaction, measurement, and disclosure. The history of physics reflects this structure: successive theories refine rather than replace their predecessors, disclosing deeper features of the same reality without ever exhausting it. This refinement relation, understood as correspondence without exhaustion, is precisely what a participatory ontology of depth predicts. The resulting interpretation is more adequate than naive materialism, instrumentalism, ontic structural realism, and OOO’s withdrawal thesis, not because QFT proves Participatory Non-Reductionist Realism, but because participatory realism explains what QFT reveals in a way that these alternatives cannot.
