Abstract
Brains reason. Artificial systems reason. Their physical structures differ dramatically, yet their capacity to organize information appears comparable.
The prevailing assumption is that mind is identical with the physical structure implementing cognition. This paper argues that current evidence supports a different interpretation.
The central hypothesis is that mind is more accurately identified with an ongoing cognitive process than with the physical structure enabling it. Physical structures remain indispensable because they constrain which cognitive processes are possible, but they need not be identical to the processes they implement.
The paper develops this claim through progressive reduction. First, cognition is distinguished from its physical implementation. Second, mind is identified with the active process of reasoning rather than the structure supporting it. Third, reasoning itself is analyzed into a more fundamental operation: the generation, maintenance, comparison, and organization of distinctions.
This final proposalâthe Distinction Hypothesisâis presented as a deeper explanatory account of reasoning rather than as a prerequisite for the broader process identity theory.
Both hypotheses are explicitly falsifiable through experimentally distinguishable predictions concerning structural intervention, informational organization, and cross-substrate cognition.
1. Beginning With the Obvious
Human brains change slowly.
Reasoning often changes quickly.
Education changes reasoning. Conversation changes reasoning. Experience changes reasoning. Books change reasoning. External memory changes reasoning.
Learning certainly produces physical changes within the brain, yet the functional organization of reasoning often changes more rapidly and more dramatically than large-scale anatomical structure. Likewise, artificial systems can exhibit markedly different reasoning while running on identical hardware when provided different knowledge, tools, or interaction histories.
These observations do not establish that physical structure is unimportant.
They instead motivate a question: When we refer to âmind,â are we identifying the physical structure, or the dynamic activity occurring through that structure?
