Abstract

The goal of this chapter is to pin down as well as we can the logical space of humility by distinguishing it from closely related concepts such as modesty, arrogance, pride, and vanity, as well as the vexed issue of how and whether intellectual humility requires abandoning one’s autonomy. Doing so will put us in a position to explain the nature of humility in the next chapter by preventing some confusions between humility and closely related notions. It will also aid in defending more fully the claim that it is a virtue and thereby has value in the attempt to find the good life.
