Abstract

There has been a surge of interest in divine omnipresence in contemporary analytic philosophy of religion. In this chapter I provide an overarching taxonomy of divine omnipresence in terms of fundamental and derivative divine presence at a place. Minimally, occupation accounts of divine omnipresence entail that God is fundamentally omnipresent in virtue of standing in the fundamental occupation relation to one or more regions of space. This chapter explores varieties of occupation accounts on offer in the contemporary literature and defends a minimal occupation account against four recent objections, what I call the argument from shape-to-materiality, the argument from incompatible shapes, the argument from immateriality, and the argument from causal intensity.
