Abstract

This chapter focuses on the semantics of intensional transitive verbs ( itv's ) ‘Fear’ is _transitive_, or has a standard transitive use, since it has a standard use in which it takes a direct object (it also has a standard use in which it takes a clausal complement, either finite, as in ‘fear that the door is open’, or non-finite, as in ‘fear to open the door’). And ‘fear’ is _intensional_, or at any rate _not extensional_. This chapter classifies itv's and exhibits some problematic aspects of their behaviour.
