Abstract

Media is inconceivable without language. Knowledge is passed on and created using words, opinions are conveyed, and criticism is expressed. A critical examination of media therefore requires a detailed study of language in and of itself. Language is never harmless. It was the linguistic turn, which particularly triggered in-depth discussions on “violence and language” within Gender and Queer Studies. These concern both the (hetero-)normativity of language and the permanence of violent terms.
