Abstract

This chapter is devoted to Plotinus’ theory of the soul. It first discusses the ancient notion of the soul quite generally as well as Plotinus’ view that the soul, like the intellect, belongs to the intelligible world. The distinction between the hypostases of Soul and Intellect is considered as well as the relation between the hypostasis Soul and individual souls. Even though the soul belongs to the intelligible world, it is also active in the sensible world. Accordingly, the relation of soul and body is discussed. The chapter explains what powers the soul needs in order to be active in the sensible world. Finally, Plotinus’ theory of the soul is situated in its historical context.
