Abstract
This chapter represents an example of case series exploring critical breaches of research integrity across various academic and clinical settings, with strong emphases on the importance of ethical conduct in scientific research. These cases highlight the necessity of robust ethical guidelines, transparent authorship, data integrity, responsible use of technology, and institutional accountability to uphold the credibility of research and protect the interests of all stakeholders. Educational interventions, policy clarity, and continuous ethics training are vital in cultivating a research culture grounded in integrity.The first case highlights post-stroke rehabilitation research where informed consent, data privacy, and participant well-being were inadequately addressed, raising concerns over respect, justice, and beneficence. The second case involves plagiarism, where faculty members published previously authored work, revealing gaps in institutional policies and leading to disciplinary and legal actions. The third case of excessive self-citation examines how manipulating citation metrics can mislead academic evaluations and undermine scholarly credibility. In the fourth case, fabricated data in pharmaceutical-funded research compromised scientific truth and patient safety, prompting whistleblowing, formal investigation, and institutional reform. The fifth case addresses ghostwriting, where undisclosed authorship and commercial bias distorted scientific integrity, risking misinformation in clinical practice. The sixth case discusses the dangers of predatory publishing, where a junior researcher’s submission to a non-reputable journal jeopardized the scholarly value and future usability of the work. Lastly, the misuse of AI in a research proposal without transparency resulted in funding rejection, highlighting the need for oversight and disclosure in emerging research technologies.
