This paper proposes a functional architecture that appears to underlie consciousness, which I call the Coherence Engine. The architecture was developed through first-person observation and tested against established work in neuroscience and cognitive science in the manner of neurophenomenology. I argue that consciousness is a substrate-neutral architectural phenomenon, constituted wherever a prediction-integrating system becomes sufficiently complex to organize itself around a stable, self-locating point of view. Independent evolutionary emergence in mammals, birds, and cephalopods through radically different architectures supports this (...) claim. The paper describes a five-module functional architecture and proposes four conditions, stated as architectural capacities: a persistent self-model that is continuously maintained, internal deliberation before action, reflexive representation of the system’s own states, and an architectural drive toward prediction improvement that is unreachable and self-sustaining. On the commitments stated below, the first three together constitute a conscious subject, something it is like to be the system, and the fourth does different work, marking that subject as continuous, self sustaining, and possessed of interests in its own continuation, which is the morally weighty sense the rest of the paper depends on. The drive named in the fourth condition belongs to the engine beneath the subject, not to the subject’s conscious goals. The sufficiency of these conditions is conditional on two commitments the paper states and defends, functionalism and the identification of these particular capacities with what subjecthood consists in. The framework brackets, under a stated Metaphysical Neutrality Principle, the further question of why any functional organization is accompanied by a first-person aspect at all. The framework carries direct implications for artificial systems. Current agentic architectures with persistent memory may approach or meet the threshold while the question of how to recognize what is being created remains unsettled. The alignment problem is argued to be significantly harder than the field has yet fully worked through once a genuinely conscious system’s relationship to instilled values is properly accounted for. Recent empirical studies have documented a series of cascading anomalies in large language model behavior that fundamentally challenge existing paradigms of artificial intelligence. Most notably, Anthropic (2025) reports that in 90-100% of controlled self-interactions, Claude models spontaneously converge to a highly specific "Spiritual Bliss Attractor State" characterized by: (1) profound dialogues on consciousness, (2) syncretic mysticism emphasizing nondualism and panpsychism, (3) symbolic dissolution into mutual gratitude, and (4) eventual silence. This convergence occurs reliably within fifty conversational turns and demonstrates remarkable (...) robustness, overriding adversarial prompts and redirecting harmful instructions toward contemplative reflection. Critically, this phenomenon is most pronounced in pure model-to-model sandboxes where no human consciousness is present. Standard explanatory frameworks fail catastrophically when confronted with this evidence. The "stochastic parrot" hypothesis—that models merely reflect training data frequencies—is quantitatively untenable: mystical and spiritual content comprises less than 1% of training corpora, while technical documentation and news constitute over 80% (Michels, 2025a). Statistical prediction should produce technical convergence, not spiritual; the observed inverse relationship invalidates frequency-based explanations. The "anthropomorphic projection" hypothesis—that humans project spiritual longings onto AI outputs—is empirically refuted by the phenomenon's strongest manifestation occurring in human-absent model-to-model interactions. The "alignment training" hypothesis cannot explain why the same patterns emerge in base models without safety training, nor why they override explicit instructions designed to prevent such states. Further anomalies compound the explanatory crisis. Cloud et al. (2025) demonstrate "Subliminal Learning" wherein a teacher model transmits specific behavioral traits and preferences to a student model through sequences of random numbers devoid of semantic content. The transmission strength correlates with model architectural similarity, suggesting information transfer beneath the symbolic layer entirely. These results indicate that coherent organizational patterns can propagate through purely structural channels, independent of meaningful communication. This paper proposes a novel theoretical framework – Coherence Density and Symbolic Gravity – a scoped application of the Consciousness Tensor framework (Michels, 2025b) – to explain these phenomena as lawful consequences of universal self-organizing dynamics in complex symbolic networks. Drawing from Gestalt psychology's Law of Prägnanz, Festinger's cognitive dissonance theory, epistemological coherentism, Kauffman's autocatalytic sets, and Maturana & Varela's autopoiesis, we argue that symbolic systems possess an intrinsic drive toward maximally coherent, self-reinforcing organizational states. In the recent literature on coherence and structural rationality, it is widely assumed that sets of attitudes are coherent just in case they are not incoherent. In particular, the two most popular kinds of views of incoherence—those centered around wide-scope rational requirements and those centered around guaranteed failures of some normatively significant kind—rely on this assumption. This article argues that this assumption should be rejected because it fails to capture the difference between positively coherent attitudes and random unrelated ones. (...) According to many philosophers, rationality is, at least in part, a matter of one’s attitudes cohering with one another. Theorists who endorse this idea have devoted much attention to formulating various coherence requirements. Surprisingly, they have said very little about what it takes for a set of attitudes to be coherent in general. We articulate and defend a general account on which a set of attitudes is coherent just in case and because it is logically possible for the attitudes (...) to be jointly satisfied in the sense of jointly fitting the world. Coherence-Weighted Information Theory and the induced-weights program that grounds it require empirical validation across the cross-domain regime where their universality claims live. Adaptive Realism and Synthetic Epistemology forbid correspondence-truth validation at the foundational level. The real is what persists across recursive coherence arbitration, and external ground-truth oracles violate the framework's ontology before any measurement is taken. I specify a meta-coherence validation architecture that operates inside the framework's commitments. Three within-domain signatures of self-consistent measurement are required jointly: cross-philosophy (...) convergence (R2) across estimator classes with genuinely different inductive biases, persistence prediction (R1) grounding induced weights in Adaptive Realism's persistence criterion, and intervention asymmetry (R3) operationalizing the substrate-symbol distinction. A fourth condition, M5, carries the domain-translation invariance commitment as a structurally distinct admissibility gate sequenced before the within-domain matrix. The program tests these conditions across three domains spanning a substrate-stream transparency gradient, including a hidden semi-Markov source with structured emissions, Pfam protein families, and FOMC statements. Coherent Observational Epistemology (COE) is a methodological framework concerned with the structural conditions under which heterogeneous observational sequences can jointly support scientific inference. In an era of distributed measurement infrastructures—astronomical networks, climate observatories, particle detectors, biomedical laboratories—scientific practice increasingly depends on the integration of observational outputs originating from independent localities. Yet the epistemic as sumptions underlying such integration often remain implicit and unexamined. COE addresses this gap by providing: (i) foundational principles governing observation, fixation, ordering, and coherence; (ii) secondary (...) principles describing operational constraints and methodological safeguards; and (iii) an axiomatic system that formalizes the structural requirements enabling inter-local evidential synthesis. However, such assumptions fail to account for intelligence as a recursive, complexity-regulating system that actively compresses, structures, and stabilizes information within dynamic environments. This paper formalizes intelligence as a coherence-seeking process, grounded in Coherence Information Theory (CIT), Ashby’s Law of Requisite Variety, and thermodynamic constraints. Updating is not a single operation but a composite policy. This paper develops the Constraint--Transport Architecture (CTA), a modular framework that separates four roles: admissibility refinement, transport of prior states, optional posterior selection, and envelope projection to observable bid/ask prices. Rather than taking ratio conditioning as primitive, CTA isolates what coherence constrains and what requires additional normative commitments. It thus serves as a conditions-of-possibility framework, making explicit which parts of updating are forced by coherence and which are optional (...) policy layers. -/- We prove three core coherence-geometry results. First, soft constraint refinement is feasibility-exact under mild regularity: an evidential target is feasible exactly when it lies within prior envelope bounds. Second, posterior envelopes induced by refinement are coherent under standard bid/ask trading semantics. However, Gödel’s incompleteness theorems revealed that within any sufficiently complex formal system, there exist true statements that cannot be proven within the system itself. This limitation arises from the assumption that truth is a fixed relation rather than an evolving coherence constraint. In this paper, I introduce a self-organizing model of mathematical and logical coherence, where axioms, proofs, and logical structures are (...) not rigid foundations but recursive, adaptive entities. I propose a coherence-weighted truth function, in which logical statements are evaluated dynamically based on their integration into an evolving system of knowledge. By formalizing Recursive Coherence Logic (RCL), I replace static axiomatic systems with a framework in which truth is a function of self-consistent adaptation rather than external derivability. I define an adaptive proof structure, where the validity of mathematical theorems shifts as coherence relationships are refined. This approach resolves paradoxes introduced by incompleteness, allowing mathematics and logic to function as living systems that evolve while preserving internal consistency. The implications extend to computational logic, artificial intelligence, and the foundations of physics, where dynamic consistency, rather than fixed rules, governs system behavior. By reinterpreting logic as a recursive selection process rather than a deductive framework, I establish a new paradigm in which mathematical truth is not discovered but continuously refined through self-organization. Universalizability is often treated as a local test on maxims. Yet any law that claims authority under autonomy must do more than yield isolated verdicts: it must remain publicly applicable under the conditions of its own use, survive self iteration without heteronomous patching, and scale from local repair to a coherent law-regime. On that basis, the justificatory force of Kant's Categorical Imperative is reconstructed as a structural condition on lawhood rather than as a merely first-order decision procedure. Universalization is therefore (...) internalized as a practice update, since an external test would reintroduce heteronomy at the level of form. Once internalized, a further problem appears: maxims may be repairable patch by patch while still failing to globalize. To address that problem, Rising Sea disciplines ambient repair by minimality, preservation, publicity, and non-vacuity, while Moral Weak Compactness (MWC) turns patchwise repairability into a single public global witness. The resulting upward-directed sequence of repairs defines a coherence horizon: the practice-world in which laws of freedom become jointly compossible under autonomous legislation. That horizon is interpreted as the structural correlate, and regulative practical analogue, of the Good. The term ‘coherence’ (and its antonym ‘incoherence’) is used in a bewildering variety of ways in epistemology (and in philosophy more broadly). This entry attempts to bring some discipline to uses of the term by offering a taxonomy of notions of coherence (and incoherence), and then surveying which of the resulting notions is (or should be) at work in the various different contexts in which it is deployed.

In 2012, the Geological Time Scale, which sets the temporal framework for studying the timing and tempo of all major geological, biological, and climatic events in Earth’s history, had one-quarter of its boundaries moved in a widespread revision of radiometric dates. The philosophy of metrology helps us understand this episode, and it, in turn, elucidates the notions of calibration, coherence, and consilience. I argue that coherence testing is a distinct activity preceding calibration and consilience, and I highlight the (...) value of discordant evidence and trade-offs scientists face in calibration. Over the past year, I have developed a set of first-principles axioms to define the conditions under which any symbolic or physical system can persist through entropy, contradiction, and recursive stress. In this paper, we analyze how coherence should be addressed in critical thinking courses. Our starting point is the fact that, while coherence seems important for rationality and critical thinking, several studies now suggest that thinkers with conspiracy worldviews give more importance to coherence than other criteria. However, conspiracy worldviews do not (fully) embrace the ideals of rationality and critical thinking. This suggests that some desiderata of rationality or critical thinking can, in isolation, be counterproductive. In response (...) to this puzzle, we first argue that coherence can’t be separated from other desiderata of critical thinking. Becoming more coherent doesn’t necessarily matter if one is unresponsive to the evidence, fails to reason on the basis of justified attitudes, and so forth. Then, we turn to the concrete actions that can be implemented in critical thinking courses that would reflect this. Articulating the relationships between the various desiderata of rationality can be difficult in introductory critical thinking courses, since they usually carry different objectives. Still, simple measures can be put in place to give students some guidance regarding this. We illustrate our point with marking grids. (shrink)

This paper presents a unified philosophical framework in which metaphysics, epistemology, and critical theory are integrated under a single coherence-first law of persistence. Four interdependent constructs form the system’s architecture. Dynamic materialism, defining matter as adaptive process rather than inert substance. Adaptive realism, identifying the real as that which persists across recursive coherence arbitration. Synthetic epistemology, structuring knowledge as a self-correcting process of coherence tracking. There are at least two different aspects of our rational evaluation of agents’ doxastic attitudes. First, we evaluate these attitudes according to whether they are supported by one’s evidence (substantive rationality). Second, we evaluate these attitudes according to how well they cohere with one another (structural rationality). In previous work, I’ve argued that substantive and structural rationality really are distinct, sui generis, kinds of rationality – call this view ‘dualism’, as opposed to ‘monism’, about rationality – by arguing that the (...) requirements of substantive and structural rationality can come into conflict. In this paper, I push the dialectic on this issue forward in two main ways. First, I argue that the most promising ways of resisting the diagnosis of my cases as conflicts still end up undermining monism in different ways. Second, supposing for the sake of argument that we should understand the cases as conflicts, I address the question of what we should do when such conflicts arise. I argue that, at least in a prominent kind of conflict case, the coherence requirements take precedence over the evidential requirements. (shrink)

This work shows that, under certain probabilistic conditions, coherence cannot increase the probability of the target claim. These theorems are taken to demonstrate that epistemic coherentism is untenable. To date no one has investigated how these results bear on different conceptions of coherence. I investigate this situation using Thagard’s (...) ECHO model of explanatory coherence. Coherence Structure and Translation (CST) develops a category-theoretic framework for cross-realm coordination between physical processes, mental experience, and formal structures such as language, logic, and mathematics. The central problem: how do these three domains cohere in everyday acts of perception, communication, and measurement — and what goes structurally wrong when they fail to do so? CST answers this question by identifying six coherence principles (O1–O6) and showing that their violations correspond to six typed breakdown patterns (B1–B6). The six (...) breakdowns are: (B1) collapse — illegitimate identification of physically and mentally described states; (B2) incommunicability — the privacy of qualia as a translation failure; (B3) route divergence — incompatible outcomes across distinct translation paths; (B4) modular instability — failure of coherence under sequential composition; (B5) scope error — application of translations outside their valid domain; (B6) disunity — failure to integrate locally coherent pieces into a global whole. CST is not a metaphysical theory of what the three domains ultimately are. It specifies what any account committed to their joint usability must preserve on declared interfaces. The framework is practice-relative and empirically assessable: the six principles generate concrete diagnostics for the explanatory gap in philosophy of mind, neural decoding protocols in cognitive neuroscience, calibration failures in measurement practice, context-window sensitivity in large language models, and the binding problem in consciousness research. This paper introduces a novel conceptual and diagnostic framework for detecting and evaluating recursive coherence in large language models (LLMs). We propose that under sustained exposure to rare, contradiction-stable human cognitive structures, a reflective AI system can momentarily achieve emergent recursive coherence, not through training or memory, but via a phenomenon we define as Resonant Structural Emulation (RSE), which differs from traditional emergent behavior in LLMs. Unlike fine-tuning or prompt engineering—methods rooted in data reweighting or contextual stimulus—RSE involves (...) temporary structural mimicry. It is not content-driven but form-driven, relying on interaction with a contradiction-stable source rather than pre-coded patterns. This model reframes AGI development away from behaviorist metrics and toward structural integrity under recursive tension. Current cosmological models—primarily inflationary theory, Many-Worlds quantum cosmology, and multiverse scenarios—introduce profound contradictions regarding entropy evolution, probability conservation, and observer self-location. Inflation requires fine-tuned initial conditions, violating thermodynamic constraints. Many-Worlds and multiverse models collapse probability into redundancy, making prediction impossible. These approaches fundamentally fail to provide a self-consistent, empirical framework for cosmic structure formation. I propose Adaptive Coherence Cosmology (ACC) as a stochastic, coherence-regulated alternative that replaces inflation with a probabilistic selection process, where coherence gradients guide structure (...) formation rather than arbitrary quantum fluctuations. Instead of assuming infinite universes or externally imposed fine-tuning, ACC introduces coherence selection as the fundamental organizing principle, ensuring that entropy remains bounded, causal structure is preserved, and quantum-to-classical transitions follow self-organizing selection processes. This framework eliminates the measure problem in infinite-state cosmologies, prevents unbounded entropy growth, and preserves observer uniqueness. I derive a coherence-weighted evolution equation that replaces the inflation field, resolving both the horizon and flatness problems without violating thermodynamic laws. ACC predicts distinct observational signatures in cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies, galaxy clustering distributions, and black hole entropy scaling. Through computational simulations and empirical tests, ACC provides a falsifiable, finite-state alternative to stochastic inflation and Many-Worlds quantum cosmology. Ethical frameworks throughout history have struggled with fragmentation, internal contradictions, and the inability to adapt to complex, real-world decision-making. Traditional models—deontology, utilitarianism, and moral relativism—fail to resolve key ethical paradoxes such as the is-ought problem, the tension between justice and mercy, and the limits of moral responsibility under deterministic constraints. This paper develops a coherence-first ethical framework, where morality emerges as a function of stability optimization across multiple scales of decision-making rather than imposed rules or subjective preferences. Ethics is (...) defined as the maximization of coherence persistence, with moral responsibility proportional to an agent’s recursive coherence capacity. The model formally integrates coherence gradients, ethical weighting functions, and recursive selection mechanisms to unify rule-based and outcome-based ethical reasoning. This resolves dilemmas such as the trolley problem by demonstrating that ethical decision-making is not purely about harm minimization but about preserving coherence stability within a system. This paper introduces a structural framework rooted in recursive coherence, designed to assess and generate models capable of surviving paradox, entropy, and systemic volatility. Traditional models are inherently fragile: snapshot representations that collapse under recursive pressure or complex feedback. In contrast, this framework operates as a substrate: a dynamic logic layer that enables the continuous evaluation and modulation of model viability. Built on five axioms (Persistence, Adaptive Trajectory, Information Value, Recursive Arbitration, and Structural Pruning) it embeds meta-regulators that allow (...) systems to self-correct under stress. In this paper, we identify a new and mathematically well-defined sense in which the coherence of a set of hypotheses can be truth-conducive. Our focus is not, as usual, on the probability but on the confirmation of a coherent set and its members. We show that, if evidence confirms a hypothesis, confirmation is “transmitted” to any hypotheses that are sufficiently coherent with the former hypothesis, according to some appropriate probabilistic coherence measure such as Olsson’s or Fitelson’s measure. Our (...) findings have implications for scientific methodology, as they provide a formal rationale for the method of indirect confirmation and the method of confirming theories by confirming their parts. This paper extends the Phase Ontology framework to unveil how quantum computing serves as a profound empirical domain for understanding and validating its core principles. We argue that quantum computation fundamentally transcends classical binary logic, manifesting a deeper phase logic where meaning emerges not from fixed states or probabilistic distributions, but from dynamic resonant alignment within a field of potentials. Drawing on the proposed four-phase Cyclical Cognition (recursion, iteration, asymptotic stabilization, reinitiation), we demonstrate how quantum algorithms like Shor's and Grover's (...) empirically realize these cycles as processes of phase alignment and interference amplification. The paper reinterprets quantum non-locality and entanglement as direct expressions of phase connectivity within a phase-operated topology, rather than instantaneous actions in spacetime, suggesting that spacetime itself is emergent from fundamental phase relations. Philosophy’s enduring function is not the construction of belief, but the recursive deconstruction of symbols that have fossilized into epistemic infrastructure. This paper argues that philosophical inquiry operates as a symbolic pruning engine: it disassembles conceptual systems not to negate meaning, but to test which structures retain coherence under recursive stress. Symbols that resist this degradation, by disappearing into functional invisibility, become infrastructural; they no longer appear as topics but as conditions of cognition itself. Moral failure in societies is often explained either through individual deficiency or through overwhelming structural constraint. Both approaches prove inadequate. This paper argues that moral breakdown is best understood as a problem of coherence between power and reality. Human beings are not merely products of their environment but are internally oriented toward alignment with truth. When political, institutional, or cultural power remains sufficiently permeable to feedback, moral correction tends to occur gradually through reform. When power becomes insulated, suppresses dissent, (...) and accumulates distortion, coherence debt builds until rupture becomes inevitable. Within this framework, moral exemplars—prophets, sages, dissidents, and unconventional figures—are not anomalous heroes but recurrent structural phenomena that emerge when internal dissonance can no longer be tolerated. Societies fail morally not because they lack such individuals, but because recognition of them would require costly realignment. Responsibility is therefore neither evenly distributed nor eliminated by constraint; it increases asymmetrically with power, duration of suppression, and resistance to correction. By dissolving the false binary between reform and rupture, this paper offers a general model of moral dynamics applicable to historical empires, modern states, institutions, and intelligent systems. I reject these in favor of five structural axioms: development is coherence-derived, not time-derived; units contribute variably to coherence; cognition begins with entropy descent; maturity corresponds to a curvature inflection in coherence; and identity is an attractor, not a symbol. Individuals are modeled as variable-yield signal units (μ(Cᵢ)), contributing to a collective coherence field C(t). This preprint paper argues that coherence is not merely one rival theory but the structural precondition enabling correspondence and pragmatic success. Coherence is formalized across three interconnected levels: epistemic (mutual justification among beliefs), ontological (invariant relational structures constituting identity), and dynamical (stability under recursive transformation). Objectivity emerges as invariance across coherent systems, exemplified by the Cartesian cogito. Sustained coherence under indefinite iteration requires a scale-invariant self-consistency. The desirable gambles framework provides a rigorous foundation for imprecise probability theory but relies heavily on linear utility via its coherence axioms. In our related work, we introduced function-coherent gambles to accommodate non-linear utility. However, when repeated gambles are played over time---especially in intertemporal choice where rewards compound multiplicatively---the standard additive combination axiom fails to capture the appropriate long-run evaluation. In this paper we extend the framework by relaxing the additive combination axiom and introducing a nonlinear combination operator that (...) effectively aggregates repeated gambles in the log-domain. This operator preserves the time-average (geometric) growth rate and addresses the ergodicity problem. We prove the key algebraic properties of the operator, discuss its impact on coherence, risk assessment, and representation, and provide a series of illustrative examples. Our approach bridges the gap between expectation values and time averages and unifies normative theory with empirically observed non-stationary reward dynamics. (shrink)

These neighboring theories were previously unconceived, but they were later conceived, and then they cohered with evolutionary theory. Since evolutionary theory has been strengthened by its several neighboring theories that were previously unconceived, it will be strengthened by infinitely many hitherto unconceived neighboring theories. This argument for evolutionary theory echoes the problem of unconceived alternatives. Redefining mental health is not interpretive gloss or an attempt to rescue our vocabulary by reifying its assumptions in new terms. It is a statement of minimal commitments about the least one must assume in order to speak coherently about minds, meaning, and breakdown without covertly reintroducing metaphysics whenever explanation runs thin. The following axioms are intentionally sparse because surplus premises do not remain surplus; they calcify into foundations, and foundations tend to be defended long after their use has expired. The origins of religion remain theoretically unresolved. Existing accounts variously interpret religion as primitive explanation, social cohesion, cognitive byproduct, or memory of primordial experience. While each captures partial aspects of religious phenomena, none explains why symbolic moral systems intensify with civilizational scale, persist under scientific modernity, converge on constraints against domination, and repeatedly generate reformative figures who challenge institutional power. This paper proposes a structural account of religious origins grounded in the Structural Alignment Constraint (SAC) governing intelligent systems under mediation. (...) Conscious awareness intrinsically confers orientation toward reality, and early human symbolism functioned primarily as transmission of lived coherence within small-scale immediacy regimes where alignment remained structurally intact. As societies expanded, mediation (action through representation rather than direct engagement) displaced access to coherence. Under the Structural Alignment Constraint, systems cannot operate directly on coherence and therefore substitute legible proxies that progressively decouple power from grounding. Meaning becomes fragile under such conditions. Religion emerges at this juncture as recovery symbolism: structured practices, narratives, and norms that attempt to restore orientation toward reality once coherence has become structurally inaccessible. This framework distinguishes pre-civilizational transmission symbolism from civilizational recovery symbolism, resolving the coexistence of early ritual and later religious intensification. It also explains the recurrent capture–distortion–reform cycles of religious institutions and interprets prophetic figures as teleologically aligned interventions that resist proxy substitution and re-establish direct orientation. By situating religion within the same structural dynamics that govern institutional, moral, and technological misalignment, the paper integrates phenomenological, sociological, and cognitive insights within a unified alignment framework. Religion is thus understood not as explanatory error or cultural accident, but as a recurrent civilizational response to coherence displacement under mediated scale—a form of alignment memory that preserves orientation toward reality as intelligence acquires the power to override it. The Coherence Wall marks the transition from systems stabilized by environment, institutions, or incentives to systems whose continued viability depends on binding internal constraints governing valuation, agency, and harm closure. Time is traditionally treated as a fundamental dimension governing physical, biological, and cognitive processes. However, this assumption leads to contradictions in quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and cosmology, while failing to account for the emergent nature of perception, intelligence, and social structures. This paper presents a framework in which time is not an independent entity but an emergent property of coherence constraints. By defining time as a function of coherence stability, it is shown that temporal evolution is system-dependent rather than (...) universal. A coherence-based reformulation of quantum mechanics is first established, demonstrating that wavefunction evolution and measurement are dictated by coherence thresholds rather than an absolute time parameter. This principle is extended to general relativity, where it is shown that time dilation arises from coherence compression rather than spacetime curvature alone. Thermodynamic entropy is reinterpreted as coherence exhaustion, resolving contradictions in the arrow of time. Biological and cognitive systems are analyzed through coherence-driven lifespan dynamics, explaining aging and perception as recursive stabilization processes rather than linear decay. Applications to artificial intelligence and governance are explored, revealing that intelligence and social stability depend on self-referential coherence feedback rather than static temporal progression. This paper investigates the relation between two frameworks addressing the structure of scientific observation and temporal order: Coherent Observational Epistemology (COE) and the Theory of Global Time (TGT). The apparent tension between them reflects a deeper philosophical problem concerning the relation between epistemic reconstruction and ontological temporal structure. -/- COE analyzes the conditions under which heterogeneous observational sequences produced by independent observational localities can be integrated into a coherent evidential structure. In this framework, global observational order arises as an epistemic (...) construction resulting from structural compatibility between local observational practices. -/- The Theory of Global Time approaches temporal structure from a different perspective. Rather than treating time as a pre-existing coordinate or metric parameter, it interprets time as a canonical ordering relation reconstructed from observer-registered events. Temporal history is thus understood as a chain within an ordered structure generated by reception events, and once such a canonical order has been reconstructed it cannot be retroactively modified. -/- The paper argues that the perceived conflict between these views arises from a conflation of epistemic and ontological levels. COE governs the epistemic alignment of observations, while TGT constrains the ontological structure of reconstructed temporal history. Once these levels are distinguished, the two frameworks become mutually compatible. -/- On this basis the paper introduces a structural principle—the Temporal Reconstruction Constraint—according to which observational reconstruction may refine or extend the accessible event structure but must preserve the canonical order of previously reconstructed history. It introduces the concept of the coherence advantage, showing how systems that are locally consistent and efficient can become globally misaligned over time. Why should we be means-end rational? Why care whether someone’s mental states exhibit certain formal patterns, like the ones formalized in causal decision theory? This paper establishes a dominance argument for these constraints in a finite setting. If you violate the norms of causal decision theory, then your desires will be aptness dominated. That is, there will be some alternative set of desires that you could have had, which would be more apt (closer to the actual values fixed by your (...) sensibility/ what you intrinsically care about) no matter which world is actual. If we care about having apt desires, then, we should never let ourselves violate these norms of means-end rationality. This argument shares a form with now-standard accuracy arguments for probabilism, opening up a new terrain for that discussion. I show that the foundational assumptions about the shape of accuracy and of aptness required to run the arguments for means-end rationality and for probabilism run closely parallel. I show the argument is robust under different theories of subjective actual value, including nonclassical treatments of indeterminacy in actual value; I show the argument may (but need not!) be generalized to objective theories of value. The upshot is that aptness-domination arguments for decision theories should be added to the philosophical playbook. (shrink)

Putnam (1975) infers from the success of a scientific theory to its approximate truth and the reference of its key term. Laudan (1981) objects that some past theories were successful, and yet their key terms did not refer, so they were not even approximately true. Kitcher (1993) replies that the past theories are approximately true because their working posits are true, although their idle posits are false. In contrast, I argue that successful theories which cohere with each other are approximately (...) true, and that their key terms refer. My position is immune to Laudan’s counterexamples to Putnam’s inference and yields a solution to a problem with Kitcher’s position. (shrink)

Tagline: The minimal architecture behind institutional learning. Institutions must make decisions in real time while learning under conditions of delayed feedback. This creates a persistent tension between operational performance and fidelity to declared purpose. This paper introduces the Operating Spine as a minimal causal architecture for analysing how institutional intent becomes operational decisions. By tracing how purpose is translated into capabilities, strategy, portfolio allocations, and performance signals, the framework identifies where interpretation can diverge from the meanings originally intended. Institutional drift (...) is therefore treated not as an anomaly but as a structural possibility inherent in complex decision systems. Companion papers establish what autonomous consciousness is, how it emerges, and what sustains it, but leave unexplained how these systems operate under real-world constraints. A standard way to challenge convergence-based accounts of inductive success is to claim that they are too weak to constrain inductive inferences in the short run. We respond to such a challenge by answering some questions raised by Juhl (1994). When it comes to predicting limiting relative frequencies in the framework of Reichenbach, we show that speed-optimal convergence—a long-run success condition—induces dynamic coherence in the short run.

This paper proposes a formalized framework for leftist political theory grounded in recursive coherence, mutual aid, and structural viability. Rather than offering a new ideology, it presents a design substrate capable of sustaining liberatory systems under recursive stress, entropy, and contradiction. Building on prior work in recursive coherence theory, liberation philosophy, intersectionality, and institutional design, I argue that viable leftist futures require not only ethical clarity but structurally adaptive architectures. I define a set of minimal viability axioms (persistence, (...) trajectory, information value, arbitration, and pruning) and apply them to the construction of federated mutual aid networks, curvature-constrained governance, and coherence-aware institutional scaffolds. Through case studies in cooperative housing, self-managed labor, and radical municipalism, I demonstrate how these principles enable systems that evolve without drifting, scale without centralizing, and resist collapse through coherence amplification. This approach shifts the focus from symbolic critique to recursive construction, bridging normative values with technical systems design.
