Murder at the Christmas Carols (The Wootton Windmill Mysteries Book 1) Kindle Edition

A dead carol singer. Three women sleuths. Not your average village Christmas.

All Ellie Blix wants is to make it to New Year without any more disasters. She's juggling jobs and looking after a sick daughter. Then her mother-in-law moves in and won’t stop interfering.

It’s the week before Christmas in the snowy village of Lower Wootton. When Andrea Burdett, Ellie's estranged schoolfriend, collapses at the village carols, it quickly becomes clear she’s been murdered. Feeling guilty about the recent row she and Andrea had, and under suspicion herself, Ellie teams up with her daughter and mother-in-law to follow the clues and solve the mystery - much to the annoyance of Ellie's detective inspector ex-husband.

Then a second villager is found dead. Can the three Blix women find the killer and return the community to safety?

Izzie Harper lives on the south coast of England with her cockerpoo dog, where she spends her time plotting and writing stories.

She blames her lifelong love affair with mysteries on the Enid Blyton books which she sneaked under the covers as a child and read by torchlight, and on the Agatha Christie novels which she's read and re-read since her teens.

Her innate curiosity and over-active imagination create a constant supply of story ideas. But if she gets stuck, a cliff-top walk often helps, or a slosh in the rock pools on the beach or a frolic in the bluebell woods.

The Wootton Windmill Mysteries are set in a fictional Kent village near where Izzie lives. The windmill, where the protagonists live, was inspired by the one she can see from her house.

Izzie grew up in a village very like the one she writes about, so she knows how lovely it is to be part of a friendly community where everyone knows everyone. On the other hand, she also remembers the secrets, the gossip and the curtain-twitching...

Izzie Harper is the cosy mystery pen name of crime fiction author, Vicky Newham. More info on her website: vickynewham dot com

This book is a very entertaining beach read! It is a twisty mystery that keeps You guessing until the end! I enjoyed the lead character Ellie , she seems very real with starting and running a busy. She is even more real when dealing with her husband. A good read.

Murder at the Christmas Carols is fun read with excellent plot twists and likeable characters. Like the author, I grew up reading murder mysteries, and I have a particular fondness for English mysteries, even though I am American. Issie Harper's book does not disappoint: with castle moats, a windmill house, and even an amateur theater production! This book was a perfect read in the frigid Christmas storm that came through the states. I was cozy by the fire reading my book!

I was fluttering between 3 & 4 stars, then realized i was struggling to come up with more positives, so i went to 3.

I liked how nearly all of the characters were written. Except Ellie. It took me a while to put my finger on why i didnt like her, but once I did, I was annoyed by her. She just really seemed to be a gossip, rather than someone trying to solve a murder. She told everyone everything. :| She shared private information about people's lives with total disregard for them. But then wouldn't tell Finn who his father was.

The answer to whodunit was only somewhat surprising. There were some hints, which were perfect.

I would have loved more closure between Finn and Luke, as well as Ellie and Dave, and I suspect there is more info (at least on the latter) in the next one, but I'll pass. The gossip is just too much for me and doesn't seem like something she should be doing while trying to solve a murder ~ not only does it put her in the line of fire by letting the murderer know what she knows, but it gives information to people who don't need it AND potentially hurts people (like telling about Debbie's husband or the unkindness of Sue before she learned more, just as two examples I can allude to without spoiling).

I don’t remember how I stumbled across this book but I am glad I did. It is well written and definitely holds ones interest. The characters are well developed and certainly human. This is the first in this series and I will be looking forward to future ones.

Enjoyed this Christmas mystery. Second time reading it and I had forgotten who the nursery was and why they did it. There were some typos but I easily overlooked them because the story flowed wonderfully. Good book.

This is a new author and series for me. A small English village with lots of interesting history, people and mysteries. As in any small town, gossip runs wild, even in the local paper. Good storyline, and I am looking forward to Book #2 in this series.

I had to spend a night in hospital and was looking for a book to take my mind off things. This was perfect! I was transported to a small English town and totally absorbed by the mystery, the intriguing characters and all the details of village life. I read it in one night and can't wait to get my hands on the next book in the series.

This is the first book I've had time to read this year, and I really liked it. I like the characters and the village setting, and that the main character lives in a windmill! The storyline is interesting and full of surprises, yet is easy to follow which makes a nice relaxing read. I can hardly wait for her next book to come out.

I haven’t ready anything by Izzie Harper before. Murder at the Christmas Carols will not be the last of her books that I read. Absolutely loved this book. Twists and turns, likeable characters and a wonderful ending. Looking for more!
