Connecting Trains book cover - a railway line

Back in Surrey. Back in Danger

Back in Surrey and still recovering from injuries sustained in Thailand, DI Matthew Goodwin is assigned to lead a new Major Incident Team investigating a series of escalating burglaries. What begins as a routine case quickly unravels into something darker—manipulated witnesses, fear, and lies point to a calculated murder at the heart of family life in leafy Surrey. Connecting Trains blends procedural grit with psychological tension, as Goodwin’s instincts and his team uncover truths no one wants to face.

Aloha Goodbye Book cover - turquiose coloured sea crashing against the black lava rocks

A cruise to paradise. A murder on board. A killer heading for shore.

DI Matthew Goodwin is enjoying a cruise to Hawaii with Jane when a crew member is found murdered aboard the Pearl of the Pacific. With limited investigative tools and restricted data access, Goodwin must rely on instinct—and remote help from his UK team—to narrow down suspects among 4,500 passengers and crew. As the ship sails toward Hilo, the killer prepares to disembark on an island of stunning beauty and volcanic shadows. The captain’s decision to keep the crime quiet adds pressure and risk: are they preventing panic or letting a murderer escape? Set against the backdrop of Mauna Loa and inspired by Helen Taylor’s time on Hawaii’s Big Island, Aloha Goodbye blends psychological tension, procedural grit, and the haunting isolation of a crime at sea.

Two Worlds. One Detective. A Series in Rhythm.

The DI Matthew Goodwin Detective series alternates between solo international cases and team-led UK investigations. In Thai Die, Aloha Goodbye and Don't Die for Me, Argentina, Goodwin works alone in unfamiliar terrain - Thailand, Hawaii and Argentina - where instinct and resilience are his only allies. In Connecting Trains and Lethal Leith Hill, he returns to Surrey, leading a Major Incident Team through escalating crimes, buried secrets and psychological tension. This rhythm, abroad then home, mirrors Goodwin’s emotional journey and gives each book a distinct tone. Whether navigating foreign corruption or domestic deception, Goodwin is driven by a quiet intensity and a refusal to let go of the truth.

A detective is one of the first on the scene, and we share her fascination with the blood-soaked guy stumbling out of the woods; more surprises follow in succession. We stick with the detectives as one after another different revelations keep rocking the picture. I liked everything about it: very contemporary, very British, very well-done characters, and interesting setting.

A Solid Slow-Burn Mystery with Strong Atmosphere

This one pulled me in pretty quickly. The opening scene alone grabs your attention, and from there it settles into a steady investigation that keeps you interested.

What I liked most was the atmosphere. The setting really adds to the story, and there’s this constant feeling that something isn’t quite right under the surface. It’s more of a slow build than nonstop action, but that actually worked for me.

I also liked the dynamic between Goodwin and Phillips. It felt natural and added to the story without overcomplicating things.

It’s not a fast-paced thriller, so if you’re looking for something intense right away, this might feel a bit slower. But if you enjoy a mystery that takes its time and builds tension, this is a solid read.
