“Math in Your Hands: How 3D Printing Brings Abstract Ideas to Life”
Featuring Mario Micheli
Wednesday, August 12
Presentations at 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm
(in person)
For most of history, mathematics has lived on paper and blackboards. Today, 3D printing allows us to hold mathematical ideas in our hands. In this interactive presentation, Johns Hopkins University Senior Lecturer Mario Micheli explores how mathematicians use 3D printing to bring abstract concepts to life. From geometric surfaces and fractals to stereographic projections, polyhedra, and art, discover how physical models can reveal patterns and structures that are difficult to see in a textbook or on a screen. Along the way, learn how mathematical objects are designed, transformed into printable models, and ultimately turned into tangible objects that can be touched, examined, and explored. No advanced mathematics is required — just curiosity and a willingness to play.
