SurveyThe Current State of Chopping
In 1966, while playing with Bill Monroe & his Bluegrass Boys, violinist/fiddler Richard Greene placed his bow on the strings in a new way that would become the basis for the technique known as chopping. Since then, the chop has traveled around the world more than a time or two, traversing styles and cultures, picking up inspiration along the way, and changing how bowed strings participate in music. In preparation for a February 28, 2026 panel by Darol Anger, Tracy Silverman, and Casey Driessen titled "What, By Now, is Going On With The Chop?" at the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) conference, this short survey intends to help answer that question. Please take a few moments to share your experience and thoughts below. We appreciate if you can respond by Friday, February 20. Results will be shared with participants. Thank you! 🎻🪓
