Principal Investigator: Mahesh Rao | Our research group focuses on Pre-breeding and Polyploidy Evolution in Brassica, utilizing U-triangle species and crop wild relatives to enhance the genetic diversity of oilseed Brassicas. We develop genetic stocks and identify promising lines for key economic traits to accelerate breeding for resilience and productivity. Through advanced molecular breeding, cytogenetics, and genomics, we explore inter-genomic interactions, recombination, and polyploid evolution in cultivated Brassicas. Our insights help harness genetic variation and overcome breeding challenges. With a team of dedicated researchers, we strive for impactful advancements. Pre-breeding and Polyploidy Evolution in Brassica (PPEB) group is working on enhancing genetic diversity, inter-genomic interactions, polyploidization, evolution and improvement of polyploid Brassica by virtue of domestication and environmental impact. The genetic variability in the crops is the baseline for its improvement and in polyploid crops, genetic diversity is low and it needs to be enhanced by different ways.
