The Highlands and Islands Students' Association (HISA) represents over 40,000 students across the University of the Highlands and Islands' network of campuses and learning centers throughout Scotland. Operating through a structured governance model, HISA maintains dedicated offices at UHI locations in Perth, Inverness, and Elgin while coordinating student services across all university sites. The association's core functions encompass academic advocacy, welfare support, and student engagement programming. HISA's leadership structure includes elected positions at multiple levels: an executive team of President and Vice Presidents, specialized Depute officers focusing on Academic Affairs and Student Wellbeing, and campus-specific representatives. The organization conducts annual democratic elections, manages student-led campaigns, and facilitates direct dialogue between the student body and university administration. Student officers participate in UHI governance committees, ensuring representation in institutional decision-making. The association coordinates three primary service areas: academic support through representation and appeals guidance, student welfare resources including mental health initiatives and housing assistance, and community engagement via clubs, societies, and events. HISA maintains dedicated Gaelic language support services, reflecting UHI's role in Highland culture and heritage. The organization provides formal channels for students to influence university policies through structured feedback mechanisms and consultative processes.
