On a Tuesday afternoon, floor-to-ceiling windows frame the steady rush of cars and pedestrians below. The hum of traffic fades on the second floor where New York Elegant Fabrics sits, replaced by the rustle of fabric bolts and customers flipping through swatches. “People think fabric stores are chaotic,” Charles Yoo (STERN ’17) says, glancing around the space. “But there’s a rhythm to it. You either learn to move with it—or you don’t last.”

Alumni Snapshot: Benjamin A. Maran (CAS '18)
“Perfection is the enemy of progress,” says Ben Maran (CAS ’18). It’s a mantra the Brooklyn-based entrepreneur and owner of Brooklyn Habit—a coffee shop in the Carroll Gardens neighborhood—repeats often, one he says he has “lived by… every single day.” Ben works in finance by day, but he has always felt drawn to owning a business with “community vibes, social spirit, that kind of stuff.” He imagined creating a space where people could gather, talk, study, celebrate, or simply breathe. And what place does that better, he thought, than a neighborhood coffee shop?

Alumni Profile: Milteri Tucker Concepción (STEINHARDT ’15)
Milteri Tucker Concepción (STEINHARDT ’15) is a master Bomba dancer, choreographer, and educator whose work is deeply rooted in generations of Puerto Rican tradition. As the Founder and Executive Director of Bombazo Dance Co., a Bronx-based Bomba dance and drum organization, she has created an artistic space where community members of all ages learn, perform, and reconnect with Afro-Boricua history. “I am a very proud NYU alum,” she says, and drawing on her Steinhardt education, she shares, “I wanted to build a space where our community could learn, grow, and reconnect through dance.”
