If you get an opportunity to work, show up and make sure that you get a call back, based on your effort and consistency. If you get an opportunity to rest, you better sleep like a new born baby, not remembering that you even fell asleep until the next morning, or hours later. It’s easy to waste moments, because we stop looking at them as opportunities for improvement.

Rest and Venting.
If someone told me they were tired and worn out from work or other physical and mental activities, I’d simply tell them they need to stop what they are doing, and rest. Ironically I am tired and worn out from the physical demands of work. Yet I continue to work, more than ever before. The issue is survival mode and fear. However if you’re physically unable to keep going, you increase your chances of not surviving. This also exacerbates the feeling of fear. I suppose this is why the saying “work harder not smarter” gets tossed around as a key part of building and sustaining a better life over time.
The best thing I can do right now, is take a short break from everything. Allow my body to heal and move forward with more caution in terms of physical activities. Eliminating any unnecessary physical stress from my current schedule regardless of how uncomfortable it may feel. It’s so easy to sit here and type this out while failing to follow through on this simple advice.
In my mind if I slow down now, I’ll go back to living far too close to the edge. I’ll end up out of shape, overweight, dumber and lazier. Ergo lacking an ability to work hard and smart while squandering my time slot of physical strength. Eventually leading to a loss of everything I’m currently able to afford. Also jeopardizing the life of my partner because of my negligence. This is why the cycle continues and must stop.
There is nothing wrong with rest and recovery. Especially if it comes by way of overworking and stressing your body out on a weekly basis. The body will stop far before the mind does. I feel incredibly dumb having written this out. However, it is an attempt at me getting to the root cause. I’m not going to become homeless if I take a short vacation from work. I’m not going to blow up like a hot air balloon if I skip cardio for a few weeks. It will actually allow me to come back better, and more refreshed than I was before. If there’s anything you can learn from this random blog post, it’s to rest when the body gives you indications that it’s time to sit your ass down actually rest.
Producers Paradox.
Sometimes we think more is better. Engaging in more work. Building more muscle. Adding more time. Using more communication. However the law of diminishing returns becomes much more apparent as intensity increases.
In other words all else being equal, increasing your output can sometimes become less efficient and effective. Ergo you wind up actually producing less output than you thought you would. Put another way, lay your ass down and take a nap. I promise you the earth will not stop rotating because you got some much needed sleep. On top of that, your productivity will improve drastically.
Battery life/Life Battery.
How do you know when it’s time to unplug? What do you do to make it happen?
When I’m falling asleep every other page or every other word of an annual report, or book. Another sign is when I’m unable to retain the information I’m reading. Most of the time, I’ll try to take a nap, or I’ll consume a topic completely unrelated to my typical course of study. Exercise, vacations, or a walk also help me to unplug. I’m more of a “leave the plug in until the battery overheats” kind of guy.
Unplugging is something I’m trying to do more often. I’m not a fan of resting or sitting still but I’m getting better at it.
Don’t play with rest.
We have to be careful in terms of our overall health and well being. Sometimes the mind is much stronger than the body, even when the body needs rest. Don’t end up in the emergency room or doing more than what’s necessary trying to prove a point or trying to be productive. There is nothing wrong with rest when the body needs it. Just don’t take rest for granted, or the ability to do what needs to be done if that makes sense.
Some people refuse to put in effort, always resting while bitching about not having or getting opportunities, while some of us are on the brink of collapse, trying to squeeze out one more paragraph, or one more chapter or one more meeting, knowing damn good and well that we should be taking a nap, getting therapy or spending more time with family.
Fitness & Nutrition ain’t that complicated.
Making progress in the gym and in the kitchen boils down to a few things. This includes:
- Proper rest, recovery, and supplementation.
- Setting realistic goals.
- Knowing your body type and understanding your genetics.
- Writing out your plan or having one in your head. (Writing it out being the better choice).
- Consistently sticking to the workouts.
- Consistently sticking to the meal plan.
- Training hard. (No really training as if you’re preparing to become an Olympic athlete).
- Recognizing and appreciating your progress. (Even if it’s small).
If you can follow these guidelines, you’ll definitely become a better athlete and person in many ways. It’s really simple. It’s just not easy.
Sustainability.
Life is not always about getting more or getting further. It’s also about being able to sustain yourself over time. An important example of this would be with your health. Exercising consistently, and eating more foods that are low calorie with lots of nutrients is one way to sustain your overall health and wellbeing over time. Another thing is being mindful of the company you keep.
You will become similar to those you spend the most time with. If you’re with people who are positive, and have good habits, some of that will rub off on you. And it will probably serve you well in sustaining good character or better habits. Also, maintaining your mental health is another important aspect of being able to sustain yourself over time. Feeding your mind with the right information that is useful and constructive.
Making certain that you are always learning as this leads to mental expansion. When you’re done with all of that, you can than focus on sustaining a good sleeping schedule, since sleep is very critical to your overall health and wellness. Getting good and consistent sleep will allow you to continue to sustain yourself as well. Make today about sustainability.
3 Days Away.
Sometimes it’s absolutely necessary to get away from it all. The work, the fussing, the fighting, and need to push beyond your limits trying to ensure the very best life for you and your family. Not talking about or thinking through the financial implications of fundamental analysis, and wondering where the market or the economy is going. You just focus on rest, relaxation, and eating as many chocolate chip cookies as your stomach can tolerate. This sometimes is what needs to be done, in order to recharge your life.
Next year.
As the year begins to come to a close, I can say, there is a lot more that needs to be done. However, Resting more was a good thing. Being productive was a good thing. Even having lazy days, were a good thing. As much as I want to point out flaws and mistakes, everything that happened so far this year served a purpose.
Going into next year, there are many intentions, and things I’d like to do, ultimately as long as I live my best life, the rest will take care of itself. How will you approach the new year?
Rest.
Taking time to rest is so important. As much as this country persuades us to work ourselves into the ground, taking a breather is okay. Your job will still be there when you get back. Your spouse or partner will be there when you wake up. Yes it’s good to take advantage of momentum, but none of it matters if you’re too ill to get new contracts, or secure that deal.
Health is definitely wealth, and it’s hard to enjoy wealth if you’re always sick from not getting enough rest. Taking some of my own advice and resting today.
A word on Rest, & Advice.
Rest for me is definitely not easy to get because I’m stubborn and feel like I’m missing out on action. The worse part about it is, I’ll record a podcast talking about the importance of resting and recovering. Specifically from exercising. Contradicting my own commentary openly. However, I do find myself scaling back a lot more, in terms of lowering my levels of intensity during training, and feeling aches and pains, and walking away from whatever workout I’m doing that day. I also have been taking short naps, and or sleeping in.
Again, not because I want to, simply because I’m trying to practice more of what I preach to others online. It sounds ridiculous, but a lot of us give advice that we often don’t follow. We do it because it sounds good or feels like the right thing to say. Another angle is giving advice because it’s what you would have wanted someone to say to you, in the beginning of your journey. All of this being the case, the lesson, is resting more often, and taking your own advice if you plan on giving it.
Cognitive Functionality.
Although the pressure you put on yourself to be as great as you can possibly be, will keep you going hard, it’s not the end all be all. You have to rest, recover and reset, because that is actually when you are most dangerous in regards to creativity, and taking action. Stay hungry, but remain rested as well. Rest sharpens the mind, and as you continue to advance, you’ll need to use your brain a lot more, to make sound decisions.
Nap time.
It’s clear that I need a nap today. Not because I like sleeping. Not because I’m lazy. Not because I feel as though I deserve it. Not because I want to.
I need a nap because I almost forgot to do something that I do everyday, which is write this blog. My 10 year anniversary of writing blog posts on wordpress just passed a few days ago. I honestly had no idea how long it had been. Anyway, clearly my brain is clouded and needs recharged. Currently trying to formulate, and understand the many aspects of investing while incrementally increasing my AUM (Assets Under Management).
Constantly working on my physical fitness, and leaner than I was earlier this year. Also, working on work which is self explanatory. Trying to learn as much as I can while going to bed a little wiser every night. I also need to record Episode 109, Season 3 of the Passion Purpose Perspective Podcast later today. If you have any investment topics you’d like me to cover, comment below.
I also discuss fitness in the first half of the show. Anyway, this was a very random post. Hope you find it useful in some kind of way.
Rest days.
When one or two days of rest feels like a week long vacation, it’s a bit scary. On one hand, it’s great to stay busy and productive, moving towards your lifelong goals. It’s essential to make a living in order to pay your daily, monthly and annual expenses. On the other hand, it’s a bit strange to feel out of place when things are not as chaotic. It’s kind of sad to feel like you’re not worth a damn if you’re not pushing yourself and going hard every single day.
At some point we have to take a breather, and be thankful for what has been accomplished thus far. The rest is needed so that we can recharge and keep moving towards our destination. Running yourself into the ground becomes counterproductive.
Self analysis.
If you’re constantly beating your body up through various physical activities, at some point the law of diminishing returns will take full effect. I guess it’s okay to rest and let things heal up. Rest will turn into recharging and recharging will turn into better efforts and more efficient results.
Rest…
Getting rest is good for you. It can allow you to regain mental clarity. Rest can help you to recall any new information that you consumed previously, through the act of R.E.M Sleep. Rest can give the body a much needed break. Rest will allow your joints, ligaments, and tendons to recharge, and fully heal. Rest can be a huge benefit to your overall well-being.
It’s nice to work hard, and put in 50, 60, even 100 hour weeks, but without a sufficient amount of rest, you’ll just be spinning your tired, and always injured. Let’s rest a little, and recover for next year.
Fuck being perfect.
Here I am once again. Exhausted, disappointed in where I am (as always), looking for that dose of euphoria. I am in need. I don’t need what I think I need though. I think I need to reinvent myself once again.
No this is not the case. What I really need at the core is REST! SLEEP! Sensual, Seductive, Sleep! I need to shut the world off and close my eyes long enough to rebuild my muscles, my spirit and most importantly my mind.
Maybe that part of the reason I came back here. I can vent, release and vanish into thin air. Well that’s all I’ve got for now. I missed this!
Rest days.
Working your ass off is great. Something else that is also important is recovery. Wether it’s from something physically like a sport, or mentally like presenting or launching idea. From time to time you have to shut everything off amd just relax. Let your mind body and soul heal and recalibrate itself back to an optimum level of functioning.
I don’t know how often we should take breaks but they are definitely needed through each journey. You don’t want to run yourself into the ground.
Stay on it.
You can never really rest on your morals. There is always someone somewhere out there trying to beat you. Every time you’re sleeping they are awake and working. Every time you eat a donut they are munching on salad. While you’re complaining, they are complimenting.
Be the best in the world on your worst days. You never know who’s right behind you, looking to take your spot in life.
Recovery.
Make sure that while you’re working hard towards your ultimate goals, you are taking care of your body. The body breaks down day after day. You can workout, eat right, and be as careful as you want. The best recovery is probably sleep.
I’m not a fan of sleep, but it has helped me recover many times in the past.
Lets rest, recover, and come back stronger tomorrow.
Sunday…
Today you can reflect and rest.
Every single day won’t be all out
Some days you can get up, get out, and give it your all. Other days you have absolutely nothing left and can only rest. As long as you continue to move forward toward life long goals, a few bad days of pursuit, and effort are better than no days at all.
Rest days…
…Are extremely important, for the body and mind. Sometimes we need to stop. Let our battery recharge. In america it is a normal practice to work past burnout. Taking breaks is considered weak says the american public.
Of course we know this is crap and that rest is one of the most importsnt aspects of life. It’s hard to embrace but must be done.
You’ll feel stronger, much more alert, and happy.
Too much work, not enough play.
Society’s problem is not that we don’t want to operate at our most optimum levels. It’s not that we don’t want to be healthy.
It’s society’s constant definition of hard work and success. Success is often seen as something you have to lose tons of sleep over, while guzzling caffinated drinks, going days, months, and even years without a vacation.
The school system is just as bad. College doesn’t work around peoplems schedules. It’s the complete opposite. They expect high gpa’s and for you to have enough money left after bills to pay for books and tuition. Not to mention, homework.
We live in a work-horse society.
We need peace. We need rest. We need to be still.
The issue is, it’s been so ingraved in us to become workaholics in order to keep up that going any other route seems too slow, or like we’re going backwards.
Sad but true.
Go to sleep negro!
I woke up this morning feeling good. Reason? I was able to sleep in a little. Why did I sleep in instead of the usual rise early work flow? Because lately I have been going to sleep really late, and when that happens and I end up getting 4 hours of sleep, and my writing suffers greatly!
It’s tough to be creative when you can barely keep your eyes open.
I had a routine and ruined it by trying to take advantage of being well rested. I refuse to go to sleep early so I wake up later and post later.
The lesson here is to get into habits of being well rested. Practice going to sleep and waking up at the same times everyday. It regulates the body and causes you to not need an alarm clock after a few months of constant practice and execution.
Eat, sleep, read, and exercise according to your daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly goals.
Being out of it 75% of the time because of lack of self-discipline is not worth the incredible costs.
Rest, Breaks, Taking time to do nothing.
The last couple of weeks have been incredibly busy for me. It made me realize a few things about life.
One thing I learned is that everybody needs a break eventually in life. What I mean by a break is taking a day or 2 off and just being thankful and not stressing or worrying and working. We all must learn to just let go so we can find recovery at its highest point.
That does not always mean go on a super expensive vacation. Sometimes it just means sitting in your room or office and just watching cartoons for 5 hours (I often try to do this every sunday) while eating a little junk food and laughing your ass off.
Or it could mean spending time with your friends and family in a non-working environment.
We all need RR sometimes. The key is to not abuse it but to use it to your advantage so that you do bigger and better work when you get your head back in the game.
Don’t ever get comfortable with resting though. Use it but don’t abuse it like most people do! If you notice the people who abuse rest are the ones who are extremely bored or sore from lying around. They also don’t accomplish much in an average lifetime.
You don’t want to fall in that category. Or do you?????? (I really hope not!).
SIDENOTE: I apologize to all of my readers (WordPress, Twitter, Facebook, Global14) for posting so late these last few days and weeks. I’ll make it up to you at my next live event! Which is looking like November 30…..
Say It With Confidence
Repeat after me: I am strong.
I am worthy.
I am wealthy of the pocket and of the mind.
I love myself.
I can do so many great things.
My life is in complete harmony with my dreams and desires.
I am not jealous of other people’s success.
I am a positive piece of matter flowing through the earth.
I am happy all of the time.
Everything I want I acquire at some point in time.
I will live by this declaration everyday for the rest of my life.
Get up and act.
Knowing that you are here to serve a greater purpose should pump you up. You should be so excited to get out of bed every morning.
Quick story: So yesterday was my day of rest (sunday). Usually what I do is watch family guy or fresh prince until I fall asleep for a few hours. After that I try to put in a little ground work and touch up on projects and ideas, just not as much and not as intense as a saturday or week day.
I slept until about 9:00pm. So like I said light work nothing heavy. I really have to force my body to relax on Sundays or I’ll be a wreck all week. Anyway I finally fell back asleep around 2:30am. Well more like forced myself to go to sleep but I was distracted by my iPod. Then it hit me! I realized earlier while cleaning up my iPhone and trying to sort through data I deleted some precious information. So being a little pissed off about it I got up, turned on my computer and did work.
Now it’s 4:00am and I finally realize that I need a few more hours of shuteye so that I could write this post on time. Off to bed I went.
The moral or this story is that when you have a sudden itch or desire to get up and create or think, or get any type of inspiring work done DO IT! Don’t let time zones and late nights scare you. Sometimes there is a need for lack of sleep or order to complete a worthwhile task .
If you laying in bed and can’t sleep GET UP! Do something productive. Create a list of goals. Work on that term paper that has been bugging you to death but don’t just play video games or talk to your love. Complete a task or start a task that will help you to eventually in time accomplish a really big dream.
Get up and act!
