If you think you’re okay the way you are, you will never improve. When it comes to personal development, and growth, it’s not about blindly excepting your flaws. It’s about sanding the rough edges. It’s about figuring out what biases you cling to. What limited beliefs you have. It’s about doing what it takes to unlock the very best version of yourself. This requires discomfort. This requires unlearning of dumb ideas, and bad habits. It’s about learning to adjusts actions that align with your actual goals and desired outcomes. You get there by shedding the negative actions, energy, and lack of drive. Be brave enough to embrace the discomfort.

Continue pushing.
Don’t get comfortable. It’s just too risky. As soon as you start doing well you feel like, you’ve earned the right to take your foot off of the gas. This is the worst thing we can do. Once you reach the next level, increase and optimize your process. It’s so easy to fall behind thinking too highly of what might be a great deal of luck and circumstances. Stay hungry, and keep working.
Decision collision.
Some decisions have to be made in order to get to the next stage in the process. You’ll know this because you’ll be pretty hesitant in deciding, yet struck by the immediate impact and potential benefit the decision will have on your future. The more you face these life altering decisions, the better you can become at making them work in your favor.
Build, Rebuild, or Break Down.
Breaking things apart or building something from scratch, is the most ideal state of being. Listening to a conversation with Jordan Peterson, and it makes so much sense. It may be obvious to some, but those who aren’t aware, they need to know this before they crumble and implode. We as humans must always be constructing or deconstructing things in the world. This is the ultimate pursuit. Anything else, seems to become a bit too drab to bear.
Testing…Testing.
How do you get better at your craft if nobody is there to tell you that you’ve gotten better? How do you deal with the fact that people may give you biased answers, propping you up, or shutting you down, when in actuality you might not have actually improved or have gotten leaps and bounds better? Testing yourself perhaps against any and every circumstance and situation involved in mastering or improving upon your craft. Going against the best and worst of whoever or whatever is within that category or industry, as often as possible is probably the only way. Even than, there is still a twinge of bias towards whoever is proclaimed the best if it’s not strikingly obvious.
So really no matter how much you practice, or study, it’s almost a complete waste of time, resources and energy if you’re not continually testing your thesis, skills or ability against all odds.
Better yet…
The goal is not to reach perfection per say. It’s to continually build and improve over time. You may feel as though you’ve reached a peak level, however it’s easy to overlook our weaknesses, being predominantly focused on strengths. More likely than not it takes a lifetime to master your craft. If you’re no where near the end of your life, you’ve got plenty of time to advance your skills. Don’t make excuses for stunting your own growth.
Find a reason to get better at your current level, business, work, or skill set.
You can’t go back, so fix it TODAY.
We truly are the sum total of our daily habits. Look at your life. Whatever it is, wherever you are, a lot of it, has to do with all of the things you said yes and no to. If you like it, great! Keep going. However, if you have the slightest be of contempt, or disdain for your own existence, you better get your shit together immediately. Don’t waste anymore time on things that are not pushing you towards a life you can be proud of living.
For nothing.
Some things in life we love so much. We simply act from a place happiness, and appreciation. The ability to practice an art form, you find beneficial to your existence is something you don’t always get the opportunity to do. There may be specific circumstances in which you can’t fully benefit from the act or practice of that art form, or hobby. However, you do get better, if you give yourself enough time.
You can to express yourself, and be creative. In the act of freeness and creativity, comes more understanding, and more skill. Although you are not compensated during your times of practice, the skill set you acquire, will at some point pay many dividends. This is how the art of mastery can be viewed from time to time.
Familiarity & Knowledge.
No one individual is beyond getting better. There is always something new to learn. However if you’re very focused on a specific topic, practice or profession, you can always improve upon your current skill set and knowledge base. Often times people will declare their understanding of a subject, but not know it’s origins, or the latest developments within the field. The reason we think we know something is because we mistake familiarity for knowledge and understanding.
Just because you’re familiar with something, doesn’t mean you fully grasp the concept of it or have an immense understanding of it.
Are you prepared?
For a worse case scenario? Are you prepared for the possibility of major layoffs or a run on your bank? Is there any ounce of fear in your mind about the reality of how uncertain the economy is? If so, it’s okay. All you can do is improve your current situation.
Adopt a systematic approach to how you mange and organize the little bit or large amount of money you have. As the saying goes, “it’s not how much you make, it’s how much you keep” that’s more important. Another tip is learning a trade or skill that is valuable, and needed within your area of expertise. Applying the right information in order to increase your knowledge will also go a long way in ensuring your survival. Be proactive in securing your future during what appears to be uncertain times.
Let’s be real…
You can’t do a damn thing about your genetics. You can’t control what country, city or state, you were born in. However there are so many other things you can change or improve about yourself and your life. You can study useful information and increase your intellect. You can eat cleaner and exercise consistently and improve your health.
You can start more conversations with people out in public, or go to networking events and communicate with like-minded individuals. You can be more creative and have your own show (via YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, or Tik-tok). You can stop feeling sorry for yourself and fully commit to whatever your ultimate goal is. You can pay your bills during working hours, and build your ultimate goal or dream during after hours. If you really want to do it, you can start right now, and work until you get there.
Even in rare cases where yo don’t accomplish everything on your list, you’ll still be a bad ass and a much better version of yourself over time.
Self-Adjust.
People are not going to walk up and just tell you what you need to fix. You need to continue to be extremely self aware. Not to the point of sheer awkwardness. Be aware enough to know that you’re not perfect, and that things could be improved in regards to your personality, skill set, and approach towards life. It’s harder to adjust things that seem habitual to your daily existence. This is why self reflection is so important to your development as a human being.
Make sure you’re not stagnant or going backwards. If you have to write it all out on paper, do it. Otherwise do the work that will force you to continually grow and make strides.
Is failure necessary?
What can be learned from failure? Honestly I’m not sure what can be learned if you’re just failing without purpose, if that makes sense. Here’s the thing, failure is painful, and failure is not the outcome we intentionally look for. However, when you do fail, you have to look at why you fail, and how you can improve in that failed area of your life. In a literal sense, you’re correcting your errors and learning from your mistakes, by zeroing in on what went wrong.
Once you find out what went wrong it is on you to unlearn and relearn in a more efficient manner. If we succeed at everything, eventually we’re going to realize how many hidden holes we have in our knowledge base, in our plan, and in our lives. This is why failure is needed. It humbles you, and forced you to grow or give up.
Preparing for disaster…
It means dealing with whatever is coming and not being able to hide from it. It means addressing your weakness and improving upon your strengths. It means increasing your resourcefulness, and expanding your intellect. It means setting aside emergency action plans incase of having to abort the ship in which you’ve built much comfort. We don’t know when, and we don’t know how, but we will conquer this mess that may or may not be on the horizon.
Simply put, just keep making yourself and your family better in every aspect of life to be as ready as you can be for what the world is turning in to.
Shut the front door…
“If I don’t hit x by this year or this day, It’s over”. This is just stupidity and ignorance on full display. If you’re still kicking and screaming, you should stop, for one thing. The second thing to do, is calm down. You’re still at it for a reason.
You just need the time to mature a little more and to grow into your goal or dream. It’s not always going to occur when you need or want it to. This is why you need patience, tactics, and productivity to improve while things work themselves out.
Be on point.
If you’re not prepared for worse case scenarios, than get prepared as soon as possible. You might have some of your ducks in order but there are still a few scattered around the room that need direction from you. Whatever information you need to put you at the top of your field, become completely immersed in it. You might study everyday, but do you know the material inside and out? Probably not.
Keep perfecting it. When disaster strikes you need to be ready physically, mentally, and spiritually. Otherwise you will get eaten alive by the elite.
A word.
Regardless of what you see and here about how things are going south, and panic is setting in, you still have to produce ideas and products. You still have to stay optimistic enough to keep a longterm perspective on everything. If we get too fixated on how bad things seem to be now, we might throw in the towel, and that doesn’t seem to make the most sense. Organize your life on the other side of chaos because as usual there will be a reversal or reversion of some sort. It might now be as profound as the past, or enough of a push into the future, but things will normalize over time.
Make it your goal to come out more intelligent, stronger, better off financially, and sharper mentally. What else are you going to do with your time?
In today’s environment.
The only logical thing to do now is to protect yourself your family, and any of your assets. While waiting for this economic turmoil to pass, it may even be beneficial to learn a new skill to pass the time. In layman’s terms, get better.
Move your ass. Literally.
As much as I write about sharpening your mind, I can’t ignore the body. As a former personal trainer and someone who trains 7 days a week, the benefits outweigh the downside by a ridiculous margin. If you’re not already on some moderate regimen of 20 to 30 minutes 3 times a week, you’re doing yourself a huge disservice. Health truly is the ultimate wealth. Daily exercise will improve your cognitive function.
It will lower your stress levels. Lowing your stress levels will improve your immune system. Having a stronger immune system will help you fight off many illnesses and diseases that aren’t already a predisposition within your bloodline. You will sleep better. You will be in a better mood emotionally. Daily exercise will also give you more mobility, agility and flexibility.
The most important things about daily exercise are the increased life expectancy and the commitment to self love which a lot of us lack whether we want to believe it or not. I could tie in some scientific studies and beef this up but it’s not necessary. You get the point. Move your body and sweat a little. If you’re blessed enough to make it a habit, you’ll be better off in the long run.
All of that being said, as much as you work on the mind, you need to spend at least the same amount of time or more on maintaining and improving the body.
Message for today.
You have everything you’ll ever need in this moment. Be grateful for where you are and appreciate who you are. If you want to make improvements, do it now. Create healthy habits that allow you to continue to grow and evolve over time. You don’t need a reason to be better. Just be better.
Self-Control.
We can not control others. We might be able to teach others, or influence and motivate others, but that’s the most we can get out of it. When it comes to self however, you can control a lot. You still can’t control 100 percent of your life, but there is a lot more room for growth here. You can dictate who you spend time with.
You can adjust your diet, and incorporate exercise to improve your health. You can increase your knowledge base by reading, studying and understanding new topics of interest. You can meditate to keep your mind calm, and your focus sharp. You can earn degrees or certificates that allow you better opportunities for a salary increase and more professional relationships. You can become a better partner to your spouse, by understanding their love language and supporting their goals and dreams, while pursuing your own.
I think you get the point by now. If you spend time focusing on what only you can control, the rest will fall into place.
Get it.
If you don’t want to be stupid, absorb more information and utilize it properly. If you don’t want to be overweight, eat cleaner and exercise regularly. If you want to be lonely, find a partner you can connect with. If you don’t want to be timid learn to be stern or stoic. Summarizing this unnecessary message, if you want something, get up and make it happen. You’re not stuck.
I’m so biased.
Are you trying to change one of your belief systems? If so, prepare for a battle. Since we have been raised in a certain setting, we already have many biases across a narrow or broad set of categories. We literally have thought patterns and processes that active when we say, do, or see specific things based on our upbringing. So you’ll have to become aware of the bias that you want to address first.
Figure out what triggers this bias, the behavioral ticks associated with it, and how to counter that reaction with a new habit or thought process. Now rinse and repeat for every other bias you want to change, remove or improve.
To become better.
Improvement does not come unless you make the necessary adjustments. You can’t keep doing the same and expect different. Take a second, observe, plan, and work according to your desired outcome. Don’t just walk around in circles hoping to find your destination.
Marketing, Chairs, and Conversation.
So I’m having a conversation with my business partner earlier about some ideas and chairs become the topic of discussion. Throughout the whole conversation I was trying to emphasize the idea of giving customers a memorable experience just sitting down to eat at a restaurant. My thing was instead of just building a restaurant with just your standard chairs, why not have chairs that are incredibly comfortable and stylish.
My thing was not only having the very best tasting food but having great chairs become a part of the conversation piece. Most people don’t go to nice restaurants to stand up and enjoy their meals. They want to sit, so why not have them sitting in the very best designed and most comfortable chairs?
Some will argue that chairs are a stupid thing to worry about when you have, financial spreadsheets, monthly expenses, taxes, company logos, and policies to fix, improve on. My argument? When you buy a house or rent one, lease a condo or an apartment, do you just fill your space with crappy furniture?
No you don’t! You go to a furniture store and shop your ass off until you find the perfect pieces to put into your house. Which I’m almost certain includes how it feels to actually sit in the furniture. I doubt you’d buy furniture that didn’t feel good to sit in. Why would you want to eat in a place where the chairs didn’t feel just as good as home?
Crazy? Maybe.
Insane? Not when you consider the genius and logic behind it.
Normal? Not in the slightest manner.
A conversation piece? YES!
