Removed Comment I will refrain from using "Transgenderism." I have a question. My friend, W, saw a masculine person on the bus, wearing a tutu and fairy wings. The masculine person said she was a seven year old girl, despite looking 60 and balding. I don't know if that actually happened to W or she is just repeating propoganda. My question is, How do I respond to that? by azureskypirate@lemmy.zip

Removed Comment I think you are right. The way I phrased my comment left it open to the interpretation that transgenderism is a choice. Transgenderism is something one is born with, whether one chooses to present as a man or woman to society. My point is very fine: to claim "I am transgender" is not the proximate cause of transgenderism. "I am transgender/I am a woman" is an *observation* of a fact that, as you pointed out, has been scientifically shown to be genetic. I think the way you define woman, as a female gender identity regardless of body or social role, is more narrow and sophisticated than mine or the common person's definition. We need a seperate word for this to avoid confusion. I am familiar with autogynephilia. Since some TERFs embrace the idea, a few individuals, like Phil Illy, have accepted it as their identity, only to be rejected later. EDIT: I watched the first video. Very informative. I see now that gender identity is the seperate word we needed, and that it is a quality distinct from gender expression and sexual orientation. by azureskypirate@lemmy.zip

Removed Comment I crossdress, and I often wish I was a female. Coyne said one of the problems with trans dogma is "belief in what is palpably untrue (β€œa woman is whoever she says she is”)" The literal reading of this quote is true, only believing and saying one is a woman does not make one a woman. First wave feminist Simone de Bouvoir's most famous line, "One is not born, rather one becomes, a woman" speaks to this. One may adopt the social role of a woman, in dress, movement, and action, and thus be a woman. It is a stricter requirement than just belief. I can't say for sure that these men aren't evil, but they are capable of dispersing a few grains of truth. by azureskypirate@lemmy.zip

Removed Comment I appreciate your comment. The last part was a bit uncalled for, but anyway. In any case, while I can agree in scientific consensus, there will always be people that don't. And that is the point I was trying to make. There are people who believe the world is flat, and people who believe the world is 4000 years old. My point was that not agreeing with scientific consensus is not the same as not believing the people who do shouldn't exist or shouldn't participate in society however they want. In fact, the person I know who doesn't believe in the concept of transgenderism *did in fact* vote in favour of trans rights in my country (as did I). They don't understand it and don't agree with the concept, but they still want everyone to have the rights they deserve and know it's not up to them to decide how one defines themselves. And I think they are not a bigot. by cooligula@sh.itjust.works

Removed Comment As far as I read, she doesn't say anything about being against trans rights. What I read is that she believes that being trans doesn't change someone's gender, and I think that's different to being a bigot. One can respect trans people without believing transitioning actually changes their gender, because the meaning of gender has evolved, and not everyone agrees (and this is coming from someone who actually agrees). I think it's important not to use the word "bigotry" as willy nilly, because if people start calling everyone who doesn't agree with them a bigot, the word loses its meaning altogether. I do believe in people being transgender, but I do have friends that don't *but, nevertheless, respect trans people anyway*. One can believe transitioning doesn't change the underlying gender but still respect the people who do it anyway. This might sound a bit weird, but I think the principle is very similar: You can have an atheist and a theist in the same room. Their beliefs are inherently different, but that doesn't change the fact that they can respect each other. by cooligula@sh.itjust.works

Restored Comment The AFL is still one of the only codes in the world that hasn't had a current player come out. Removed Comment What would be the solution here? Trying to maintain fairness in sports is just gonna be a game of wack-a-mole. Women's leagues were created because it was believed they couldn't compete at the same level. Its argued that Trans women shouldn't play in women's leagues because they had too much testosterone, but some biological women also have increased testosterone. Should the league someone qualifies for be determined by testosterone measurements? Just have everyone qualify for men's leagues unless they can prove they're testosterone is below a specific threshold? by School_Lunch

Removed Comment They certainly do. What do you do when a small historically marginalized group may have an advantage at something but has not in any way been shown to completely dominate in it? What's fair? To let them participate or to bar them and force them to compete with people who are definitely significantly advantaged over them? Or do you create a set of rules to ensure things are as balanced as possible without being outright discriminatory? by captainlezbian

Removed Comment It's almost like this issue is more complicated than just "if you don't support trans women in sports, than you're a right wing fascist and not a leftist." It's not binary, and it's not team sports, puns intended. Dave Chappelle makes a great point about this on one of his specials. "If LeBron James got a sex change today, should he be allowed to play for the WNBA and score 800 points per game?" If I was a girl, or had daughters that were aspiring athletes, and trans women came in and started beating records to the point no women could compete with...? This is real and has happened. It's a complicated issue. The people who say you're not a leftist if you even question this at all, aren't actually leftists themselves, their just ignorant assholes. **The billionaires are happy we're arguing about this, instead of talking about taxing the wealth they did not earn and do not deserve.** by Yawweee877h444

Removed Comment Nothing concrete, it was just [a widespread practice to molest boy-children under your apprenticeship](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pederasty_in_ancient_Greece) and to sodomize other adult men as an act of power, privilege, and pleasure. You would have been considered a bit peculiar not to do so, were you able. Technically, both acts were perceived as straight, as male heterosexuality hinged upon being in the penetrative role, but I was just trying to be funni before I noticed the community by F/15/[email protected]@sh.itjust.works
