Removed Comment "I don't want anyone to take offense at this" is probably the worst way to start a thought, but I'll try anyway. My take on the negative aggression is wanting to point out that it is has been shown that plastic waste contributes to hormonal changes which in turn contributes to sexual orientation (this is through general reading with no diving deeper). How to frame this affect is a complicated issue. "Lets reduce plastic pollution to fix this issue" is inherently rude and insensitive as it implies there is something broken. How do we counter what I consider another example of mother nature protecting the planet from the abuses of our existence, while at the same time recognizing that just normal genetic variation provides the same, although reduced(?), occurrences of this trait. I'm a big proponent of genetic alteration to improve the human condition, but what a minefield you would encounter when genetic traits were discovered that lead to "being gay". I don't personally consider there is something to fix but the ramifications are beyond mind blowing. For reference I'm for working on genes to fix many things, lack of compassion being among them. Does anyone have any thoughts on this complicated issue? by StoneyPicton@lemmy.ca

Removed Comment Just like during the gay panic era, they're largely focused on men. Men who are transitioning to women. The hyper masculine (read: hyper insecure) think women are lesser than men in every way, and should submit to men. So when a man turns into a woman, it's seen as a gender betrayal. Consider how much they don't actually care about women transitioning into men. They don't care about "women in men's sports". But they really get a bee in their bonnet about "protecting women and children from men turning into women". In this they are telling on themselves: they "know" men are dangerous and should be policed, but they won't say that that's a bad thing. Instead, the "gender traitors" have to be the targets. by PunnyName

Removed Comment The US can't stop being extremist. I have high criticism of the "gender spectrum" philosophy for trying to turn exact science into fuzziness. Non-binary being the best example of that, since it just means gender-confused or some form of transgender (x-to-agender) rather than being a fifth gender of some sorts. But LGBT, gender and transgender are accurate terms (if used correctly) and banning them will only add to more confusion. by folaht@lemmy.ml

Removed Comment I can try to hear where she's coming from: people should maybe stop putting their identity politics onto their kids, and let their kids decide who they are on their own. On the other hand, her (lack of) support for trans adults doesn't seem to come from a position of understanding, and mostly comes from a fear that women who are already victims in society will be further victimised by the inclusion of trans women, based on a warped premise that all men (former, current) are not to be trusted. I want to say her heart is in the right place (protect her definition of women), but she digs her own grave with her heavy handedness in all of it by tetris11@lemmy.ml

Removed Comment > Are you interested in defending your statements or learning? No need to be condescending, and my words have no need to be misread. I have never claimed otherwise to anything you just said, I'm pointing out that there are blurry lines, grey areas where it is unclear how much bone density or muscle mass loss is considered as fair. We have very little ways of verifying what dosage of hormones people recieve, and people have no right to demand that information, making this whole thing into a mess. And the last thing we want is excluding people for 'not being trans enough'. I hate how discrimination is even a factor, it shouldn't be, and I am aware this is fighting a greater issue, maybe its better to be defacto all inclusive until proven to be a problem. by kernelle

Removed Comment > Bone density is actually one of the things that absolutely goes down with HRT, they even mention that in the study you cited. Note I said not fully reversed. > This is all from the study you just linked, if you really are interested in learning maybe you could try reading the sources you're bringing to the table. I did, it's clear that there _could_ an adventage, not that there definitely will be. > It's almost like this is a non-issue that is being brought up by assholes to discriminate against an out-group. > A reminder that this comm is not for debating trans rights, (rule 4) I've let it slide thus far, but I'm really starting to question my judgement Don't put me in the opposition just because I'm trying to understand and educate myself, I'm tired of people on both sides of this argument making clearly blanket statements, one side says "there is no physiological difference" and the other goes "hey it's completely unfair". Reality lies somewhere in the middle, but seems like you're not willing to talk about the gray zone. For the record, I support trans rights, and not taking away any power from you to educate me. by kernelle

Removed Comment > Basically, any "biological" advantage of a trans woman (cause that's the "problem," trans men are invisible) would have is erased by hrt. Muscle density, bone density, you name it. Hormones are powerfull stuff Hormones can nudge these things in one direction, but cannot fully reverse the process of puberty. [Here's a study about how far HRT can go.](https://academic.oup.com/jcem/article/109/2/e455/7223439) Also, who is going to decide which trans person has done enough HRT so the differences doesn't matter anymore? Are we really going to gatekeep being trans to make sure competition is fair? That's a few steps backwards. by kernelle

Removed Comment > there are cis women with high levels of T, eg that boxer in the olympics thae was harassed to hell and back, are you banning them? High T is not the same as growing up as male, just like HRT won't reverse completely, discussed in said study. > You cannot find criteria that ban trans women that don't ban cis women, ergo trans women shouldn't be banned I can, I just did, bone density, body build and muscle strength cannot be fully reversed. I'm not saying every trans athlete will better or 'unbeatable' as you put it. I'm saying they'll have an unfair advantage. To be clear, I believe everyone in the Olympics has some kind of biological advantage (be it Phelps having the wingspan of a 737 or Bolt having the legs of an antelope), but there shouldn't be a judge on who decides who has or hasn't had enough HRT and can compete, that's just gatekeeping being trans. by kernelle

Removed Comment Obviously not, and also missing the point. Enough of strawmanning, I am all for allowing trans people joining regular competition, I am also thinking about creating a fair environment for the other competitors. And just being trans isn't a fair fight, someone being trans having used HRT could definitely be a fair fight, but my point is theres a gray zone noone likes to talk about. But I'm done being talked down to, and it seems like not interested in listening to my points. by kernelle

Removed Comment What? I am deconstructing the issue here, not proposing a solution. Edit: I literally said there there should not be something like that, I'm so tired people deliberately misinterpreting so they can have a strawman. by kernelle
