Peter Gizzi is the author of many collections of poetry, including Fierce Elegy (2023), winner of the T.S. Eliot Prize and the Massachusetts Book Award, Now It's Dark (2020), Archeophonics (2016), a finalist for the National Book Award, Threshold Songs (2011), and In Defense of Nothing: Selected Poems, 1987–2011 (2014), a finalist for the LA Times Book Award. He has also published several limited-edition chapbooks, folios, and artist books. Marjorie Perloff has called him "a master of the mot juste and of sound structure;" Robert Creeley, "one of the most exceptional poets of his generation." Adrienne Rich has said "his disturbing lyricism is like no other;" and John Ashbery thought him "the most exciting new poet to come along in quite a while." Olin Humanities, Room 102 Nakahira Takuma was a Japanese photographer and writer best known outside of Japan as a founding member of the experimental magazine Provoke, who wrote on a range of topics including film, literature, politics, television, and more across a decades-long career as a critic. A new collection, At the Limits of the Gaze: Selected Writings by Takuma Nakahira, just published by Aperture, makes Nakahira's criticism from the years 1970-1976 available in English for the first time. Co-editors and translators Daniel Abbe and Franz Prichard will be in conversation to discuss Nakahira's engagements with contemporary art, media theory, and cinema, as well as his relentless interrogation of photography's relationship to power, and the connections between language, images, and the gaze.
Daniel Abbe teaches at Temple University in Kyoto and the Osaka University of Arts. He holds a PhD from the Department of Art History at UCLA, and has written on art and photography for Aperture, Japan Forum and X-TRA in English, and for Tokyo Art Beat, Bijutsu Techō and Popeye Web in Japanese. He also regularly translates materials related to the archive of the photographer Ōtsuji Kiyoji.
Franz Prichard is Associate Professor of Japanese Studies at Florida State University and the author of Residual Futures: The Urban Ecologies of Literary and Visual Media of 1960s and 1970s Japan (Columbia University Press, 2019). His current research develops transcultural and ecocritical approaches to the study of contemporary Japanese literature, photography, and other visual media. Reem-Kayden Center Laszlo Z. Bito '60 Auditorium On Monday March 9, Bard College Writer in Residence Benjamin Hale will read from his new book, Cave Mountain: A Disappearance and a Reckoning in the Ozarks. This reading is free and open to the public.
Benjamin Hale is the author of the novel The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore (Twelve, 2011), the short fiction collection The Fat Artist and Other Stories, and the nonfiction book Cave Mountain: A Disappearance and a Reckoning in the Ozarks. He has received the Bard Fiction Prize, a Michener-Copernicus Award, and nominations for the Dylan Thomas Prize and the New York Public Library's Young Lions Fiction Award. His writing has appeared, among other places, in Conjunctions, Harper's Magazine, the Paris Review, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Dissent and the LA Review of Books Quarterly, and has been anthologized in Best American Science and Nature Writing. Bertelsmann Campus Center, Weis Cinema Fractal Realities screening: A sweeping, poetic tribute to the enduring role of Arab women in liberation movements, Leila and the Wolves (1984) stands as Heiny Srour’s sole narrative feature. The film follows Leila (Nabila Zeitouni), a Lebanese woman living in London, who begins to uncover the often-ignored contributions of women within the larger revolutionary struggle. Blending archival footage with staged sequences, the film crafts a powerful feminist counter-history of resistance.
Heiny Srour is a Lebanese film director. She is best known for being the first female Arab filmmaker to have a film chosen for the Cannes Film Festival (The Hour of Liberation Has Arrived, 1974). Despite the film’s accolades and success at Cannes, The Hour of Liberation Has Arrived was banned in most of the Arab world for its socialist and feminist politics. Srour has advocated for women's rights through her films, her writing, and by funding other filmmakers. Poetry as Praxis? Building Cabins and Living in Ruins with Jean-Marie Gleize

Olin Humanities, Room 205 Can poetry be political practice? This talk attends to this question through examination of the work of contemporary French poet Jean-Marie Gleize. Throughout his recent poetry, Gleize draws on a recurrent motif, the cabin, connecting it with both contemporary French political struggles and theoretical notions of community. This talk will demonstrate how his sustained engagement with the cabin ultimately opens onto a conception of a radical form of community that is autonomous from the French state. Close formal readings reveal how Gleize is less concerned about what poetry is and more about what poetry does, treating it as a means of confronting the myriad crises and ruinous logics afflicting our contemporary world, from capitalist expansion to ecological devastation. Our discussion of Gleize’s work will culminate with consideration of how his poetry is conceived as a form of anti-institutional and anti-capitalist political practice that cultivates new modes of inhabiting the earth in its vulnerability.
André Pettman is Assistant Professor in French Studies at the University of Arizona, in Tucson, where he teaches contemporary French & Francophone literature. Peter Gizzi is the author of many collections of poetry, including Fierce Elegy (2023), winner of the T.S. Eliot Prize and the Massachusetts Book Award, Now It's Dark (2020), Archeophonics (2016), a finalist for the National Book Award, Threshold Songs (2011), and In Defense of Nothing: Selected Poems, 1987–2011 (2014), a finalist for the LA Times Book Award. He has also published several limited-edition chapbooks, folios, and artist books. Marjorie Perloff has called him "a master of the mot juste and of sound structure;" Robert Creeley, "one of the most exceptional poets of his generation." Olin Humanities, Room 102 Nakahira Takuma was a Japanese photographer and writer best known outside of Japan as a founding member of the experimental magazine Provoke, who wrote on a range of topics including film, literature, politics, television, and more across a decades-long career as a critic. A new collection, At the Limits of the Gaze: Selected Writings by Takuma Nakahira, just published by Aperture, makes Nakahira's criticism from the years 1970-1976 available in English for the first time. Co-editors and translators Daniel Abbe and Franz Prichard will be in conversation to discuss Nakahira's engagements with contemporary art, media theory, and cinema, as well as his relentless interrogation of photography's relationship to power, and the connections between language, images, and the gaze.
Daniel Abbe teaches at Temple University in Kyoto and the Osaka University of Arts. He holds a PhD from the Department of Art History at UCLA, and has written on art and photography for Aperture, Japan Forum and X-TRA in English, and for Tokyo Art Beat, Bijutsu Techō and Popeye Web in Japanese. He also regularly translates materials related to the archive of the photographer Ōtsuji Kiyoji.
Franz Prichard is Associate Professor of Japanese Studies at Florida State University and the author of Residual Futures: The Urban Ecologies of Literary and Visual Media of 1960s and 1970s Japan (Columbia University Press, 2019). His current research develops transcultural and ecocritical approaches to the study of contemporary Japanese literature, photography, and other visual media. Benjamin Hale is the author of the novel The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore (Twelve, 2011), the short fiction collection The Fat Artist and Other Stories, and the nonfiction book Cave Mountain: A Disappearance and a Reckoning in the Ozarks. He has received the Bard Fiction Prize, a Michener-Copernicus Award, and nominations for the Dylan Thomas Prize and the New York Public Library's Young Lions Fiction Award. His writing has appeared, among other places, in Conjunctions, Harper's Magazine, the Paris Review, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Dissent and the LA Review of Books Quarterly, and has been anthologized in Best American Science and Nature Writing. MES Spring Film Series Screening: Leila and the Wolves

Bertelsmann Campus Center, Weis Cinema Fractal Realities screening: A sweeping, poetic tribute to the enduring role of Arab women in liberation movements, Leila and the Wolves (1984) stands as Heiny Srour’s sole narrative feature. The film follows Leila (Nabila Zeitouni), a Lebanese woman living in London, who begins to uncover the often-ignored contributions of women within the larger revolutionary struggle. Blending archival footage with staged sequences, the film crafts a powerful feminist counter-history of resistance.
Heiny Srour is a Lebanese film director. She is best known for being the first female Arab filmmaker to have a film chosen for the Cannes Film Festival (The Hour of Liberation Has Arrived, 1974). Despite the film’s accolades and success at Cannes, The Hour of Liberation Has Arrived was banned in most of the Arab world for its socialist and feminist politics. Srour has advocated for women's rights through her films, her writing, and by funding other filmmakers. Poetry as Praxis? Building Cabins and Living in Ruins with Jean-Marie Gleize

Olin Humanities, Room 205 Can poetry be political practice? This talk attends to this question through examination of the work of contemporary French poet Jean-Marie Gleize. Throughout his recent poetry, Gleize draws on a recurrent motif, the cabin, connecting it with both contemporary French political struggles and theoretical notions of community. This talk will demonstrate how his sustained engagement with the cabin ultimately opens onto a conception of a radical form of community that is autonomous from the French state. Close formal readings reveal how Gleize is less concerned about what poetry is and more about what poetry does, treating it as a means of confronting the myriad crises and ruinous logics afflicting our contemporary world, from capitalist expansion to ecological devastation. Our discussion of Gleize’s work will culminate with consideration of how his poetry is conceived as a form of anti-institutional and anti-capitalist political practice that cultivates new modes of inhabiting the earth in its vulnerability.

The CEW Journal is a collection of student writing from Center-supported writing workshops across Bard, including those taught at Bard College's Annandale campus and the Bard Microcolleges in Harlem and Brooklyn. Reem-Kayden Center Laszlo Z. Bito '60 Auditorium On Monday, March 23rd, at 6pm in the László Z. Bitó ’60 Auditorium, Reem-Kayden Center, writer and Bard alum Stephanie Wambugu '20 will read from her work. This reading is free and open to the public.
Stephanie Wambugu lives in New York City. She was born in Mombasa, Kenya and grew up in New England. Her work appears in The Nation, Granta, frieze, Bookforum and The Drift. Her debut novel Lonely Crowds was published by Little, Brown in 2025. Learn more about Stephanie Wambugu's work here.
