Boot times
A while back I blogged that I had wiped my computer and installed the latest version of Ubuntu, and that I would blog some after using it.
Well this isn't that post, since I've spent very little time using the included applications; I've been in front of a command prompt for over two glorious weeks. Frankly, that post may never come. Nonetheless, I have to applaud everyone who worked to make my operating system boot faster. It's actually amazing how quickly it boots up. From pressing the power button to sitting at a desktop takes 1 minute and 18 seconds. It takes another 30 seconds to open my email client and send myself an email. It takes another 5 seconds for that email to arrive at my phone.
For those keeping track, it takes a total of 1 minute and 53 seconds to send myself an email and receive it on my phone. For comparison, my Blackberry takes 2 minutes and 8 seconds to boot.
Now, I'm sure you're wondering why it's important to me that my computer boots so fast, and I have a funny story about that.
You see, my Blackberry reboots itself several times each day. When I get an email, sometimes it reboots. When I receive a text message, sometimes it reboots. When I'm halfway through typing up an email or a text, sometimes it reboots. When I end a phone call, sometimes it reboots. When I leave it on my desk, sometimes it reboots. And it happens multiple times each day. And because my phone takes 15 seconds longer to boot than my computer, I'm actually able to turn my computer on and send an email before my phone even finishes booting so that, when it fully powers on and receives the email, I can play roulette to see if it'll reboot again!
Remember how I said I had a funny story? It's not funny. It's a joke, and it's not funny. My Blackberry sucks.
