There's no real reason to be optimistic about a revolution, but there is reason to be optimistic that you'll be able to fight for your basic right to vote.

In my state, you lose gun rights automatically if you've ever been hospitalized for a mental health issue. Even if you're released and declared healthy.

If I'm less under the weather, I'm going to be cleaning the apartment for a guest on Sunday. or I'll be in bed all day. we'll find out.

disregardable ,

I got a sore throat late last night. I had just made 2nd date plans for Sunday on yesterday afternoon. Plus today I have 3 internship interviews and tickets to a show. Really not a great day to feel terrible.

in college, a group of sorority girls ran up on this guy's motorcycle and started doing an impromptu pin up girl style photoshoot on it. for the finale she spread her legs out. then they ran off. this was in public.

Do you ever feel guilty for trying to sign up for government assistance programs?

Just yesterday, I completed an application for snap benefits. That's all I wanted and needed assistance with. Because I'm a part-time worker, my finances at times get strapped because I'm paying off a loan from a bank and it makes my working budgets feel a little compressed. I need some breathing room here. ...

You paid your tax benefits before and you'll pay them for the rest of your life. Get what you paid for.

Personally I don't need ID or finger print scanner to vote. I am a registered voter, so I give my name and vote. That's literally it. That's what voter registration is for. Like, the entire premise that our voting integrity is somehow flawed is ridiculous. We have a list. We count it to make sure it checks out. The people that try to scam the system get caught and go to jail.

disregardable ,

So we have specific polling locations we have to vote at, and in my state there’s literally a book with a list of names of everyone who will vote that day. They mark the book as you come in. So, if I vote first, the other person will be immediately caught. If the other person votes first, then it will get complicated and depend on your local rules. I would guess I will have to show ID, talk to police, and do a special ballot, but they don’t really make these procedures public. Because voting fraud is extraordinarily rare. Also the person would need to go to the correct polling location, which there are dozens of in my city. The odds of a scammer doing that correctly are low.

Millions of student loan borrowers aren't repaying their loans — and defaults are up ( www.npr.org )

Roughly a million borrowers defaulted on their federal student loans late last year, with millions delinquent on their payments and sliding toward the same fate. That's according to federal data and the latest Household Debt and Credit Report from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, which dropped on Tuesday. The report ...

what do you expect when you retract the plans people signed and then don't allow them to sign up for a new one...

People are people. Whether you live a happy and fulfilling life depends on your ability to cope with suffering.

Well yeah, men have to approach, so most of the burden of learning to date falls on men. That means you need to figure out which girls are attracted to you and which aren't, how to approach in a cool and casual way, how to be friendly and funny to keep them interested, how to take care of yourself so they feel attracted to you, etc. It's tough being a young man out there. Really you should probably be talking to other guys your age about it, as they'll best be able to critique what you're doing wrong.

disregardable ,

Maybe in some European country that's the case, but in the American context there's a strong presumption that the man will approach, to the point where it's absolutely not realistic to advise men that they don't need to learn to approach. Yes you also need to not be an asshole, and that's important, but if you don't start talking to women in the first place, they can't know you're an asshole or not.

disregardable ,

That depends on what you need it to do. You're not going to get a 1:1 replacement.

disregardable ,

Each individual decides that for themselves. Personally I've always thrown away the food I don't want. If I didn't want it, no way my mom would.

Her face. That man has put her through some things.

It sounds like you try to control your mom’s behavior a lot. You should focus on the behavior you can control (yours): finding fulfillment in yourself and accepting others the way they are as you want to be accepted.

I tried a hatch salsa this week. It was $7 but it’s so flavorful. Would recommend. I also got some Whole Foods guacamole with it, so dinner is good this week.

One of my favorite podcasters gave a talk at our school, and it was awesome. And terrifying, but better to be informed than not.

for the average person, it just provides an objectively inferior result to reading the results on google. like I cannot imagine thinking "Wow I really want an incorrect and incomplete response to my query that doesn't even link me to additional context to fill in the gaps right now"

Because you're a member of a community that recognizes marriages as life long partnerships, and you want that person to be your lifelong partner. It sounds like you in fact don't want that, so marriage doesn't make sense for you.

This is the best one, but it's not a replacement. I feel the need to add threads/bluesky to have more "normal" content.

    disregardable ,

I definitely have no interest in content where it's just conservatives who want to pretend that it's normal to hate people or whatever. I meant more like, fun memes, earth photography, local events, etc.

    disregardable ,

I definitely wouldn't care about that personally, but I would just block anyone who is an issue.

No, the opposition did win an election a few years ago! They performed horribly, but it is in fact a functional democracy. Just one that prefers to function within one party.

it's a play on the super bowl (American football championship). it airs every year right before the super bowl. animal shelters send a bunch of puppies to play on a mat with toys. the hosts act act like it's a sports game, and the shelters get some free advertisement.

A certain amount of wealth concentration is necessary to organize the production and distribution of goods efficiently and invest in research and development, but it's the competition that drives people to strive for efficiency. Too much wealth concentration produces the opposite result where one person is able to make irrational and inefficient decisions, which negatively impacts everyone below them. See: Elon Musk. If was less wealthy, to the point where he couldn't afford to fuck up, then he wouldn't be able to screw over the people beneath him.

A week is 7 days, right?

So make a 14 week plan. 4 hours for the next 14 weeks. There you go. It is now more manageable.

    disregardable ,

A billion dollars is one million $1000 dollars, right? So make a million month plan. $1000 for the next 1 million months. There you go. It is now more more manageable. If that's too hard, try $500 for the next 2 million months.

It’s hard to justify centrism in the context of the US, where one party is radically attacking peoples’ rights and re-writing the constitution to support it.

How come decades in the 1900s look fairly well differentiated but from like 2004 on feels like a giant run on?

I understand not every decade was a clean break, but each decade has fairly distinct defining properties. It feels like most of the 21st century has been a single run on with smaller changes. I know sometimes the definitions don’t come into focus until later, but I’ve been around since the 80s and I can distinctly remember ...

Buildings have become significantly more expensive to build, so only rich people build them in planned formats to make as much money as possible. Back in the day, regular people could build their own properties or afford to renovate according to their taste.

We do have multiple brilliant epidemiologists who give good health advice. You just need to understand who a credible source is and what people are trained to do. Eg. your typical medical doctor only receives 3 credit hours in nutrition. It's almost never their speciality. Just like you wouldn't trust an eye doctor to do surgery on your heart, you shouldn't trust a heart doctor to be intimately familiar with nutrition epidemiology.

The therapist needs to have some reason to believe that a person is a threat to you or someone else. One purpose of the law is establishing community standards. Even if a single family all prefer to do nothing about the abuse, the community as a whole does not want to tolerate that kind of behavior in it. So really, it’s not supposed to help. It’s supposed to punish, to try to stop the behavior.

What powers does the Secret Service have and exhibit to protect the POTUS?

I've only heard bits and pieces of this from friends and strangers through some specific events so far and desire to know more about it, at least that which is publicly witnessed or documented. They'd be limited by things like private property rights or a person's right to life and freedom, but other than that I wouldn't assume their powers are limited in any public place. The president has inherent power to do certain things (like maintain the army) that isn't derived from congress, and it's fair enough to conclude that maintaining the president's personal safety is necessary for him to be able to execute presidential functions.
