We're up to 787 civilian casualties in Iran so far. We're almost to a third of the number Bin Laden did to us. In case anyone wants to feel like we are better than them.
Folks, CALM DOWN, this is still in the workshopping phase ok? First we bomb them, then we workshop WHY we bombed them, do you not understand the plan!? ...
"We hold these truths to be self evident - that all men are created equal. But when I meet Thomas Jefferson, I'ma compel him to include women in the sequel, work!".
Man that lyric slapped hard and I'm just now realizing that if it were the N-word, it'd slap hard but be horribly historically inaccurate, as Angelica Schuyler kept many slaves. As did Thomas Jefferson.
Now, Hercules Mulligan, on the other hand....also had slaves. Despite being a founding member of the New York Manumission Society, he also had a slave named Cato who would help him to gather intelligence.
And I've got to wonder what the actual fuck Congress is doing. At this point if they aren't actively fixing it, they are complicit. Politics be damned. They're all just looking out for themselves.
If we have enough deductions to justify itemizing instead of taking the standard deduction.
I haven't had a need to itemize in several years.
That's not nearly as much of a perk as people make it out to be. It's good for a couple of years when you're mostly paying interest, but it's really not much.
Remember, a deduction is just removing the expense from your taxable income. It's not like we get that back from taxes...that'd be a credit.
So if I pay $5000 in interest over the course of the year, im not getting $5k back on my taxes. We just pretend my gross income is $5k less. And most the time, the standard deduction ends up being more anyway.
Most W2 workers take standard deduction. You aren't missing anything.
I think the last time I itemized was when I was doing some 1099 work, plus changed jobs, changed employment state, sold a house in one state and bought one in another.
At the inaugural meeting of his self-styled Board of Peace earlier this month, Donald Trump declared peace in the Middle East while simultaneously threatening to plunge the region into devastating conflict by again attacking Iran. Within 10 days, Trump followed through on that promise, teaming up with Israel to unleash a ...
This isn't your typical American hostile takeover of a sovereign nation though.
Like, usually we drag it out, there's some cat + mouse, the president doesn't say the quiet part out loud. We might drone strike a couple of kids, but we won't bomb a whole damn school. Let alone take out the leader.
And then have practically no plan following it? Trump's first announcement after the attack made it seem like creating a power vacuum was the whole intent. Subsequent announcements make it seem more like "beatings will continue until morale improves", or rather "we'll just keep bombing you till you make the government we want".
It's like constantly hitting "next" while you're on shuffle trying to get Macarena by Los del Rio, and you've got like 20,000 songs to go through. And even when Man in the Mirror comes on and you can see Macarena right there you're like, "not good enough" and keep shuffling. Don't even pause for a minute to appreciate how good of a song Man in the Mirror is. Nope. Gotta shuffle. Dale a tu cuerpo alegría, Macarena.
Last year, the Trump administration detained thousands of children like Amalia. Many were held in the detention center in Dilley, often for weeks or months at a time. Most of the people sent to the 2,400-bed facility were eventually deported to other countries. But 45% of them were released to await the outcomes of their cases ...
Man it's hard to read an article like that and not think that the whole point is cruelty and harassment.
Only 45% of detainees faced trial, and the rest were deported? I highly doubt 55% of detainees voluntarily self-deported. Where's the due process?
Dropping them off at a shelter hundreds or thousands of miles from where they were picked up with just the clothes on their backs? How is this not cruel and unusual?
Dropping them off at an independent, charity shelter, and then not financially supporting the shelter at all, while knowingly sending them far more people than they can handle.
And many are wearing ankle monitors? May as well sew a star of David onto their sleeves.
People losing jobs and homes. Kids missing education and facing permanent injury due to substandard healthcare.
Not to mention kids just...missing. Probably starting a new life as a "masseuse" for the rich and horny.
Like, I'm an older Millennial who has spent his entire life as a white boy in a small blue corner of the country.
I grew up knowing we had a shitty past but thinking that we've advanced past all that. We're more accepting now. We still have a few bad apples, yeah. I never thought racism or bigotry were dead. I just had no idea how alive they are.
It's like...you ever watch Avatar: The Last Airbender? The cartoon. Not the Netflix reboot (which is alright in its own way), certainly not the movie...no, the original cartoon.
Early on in the series, you meet a frail old man, hunched over, rickety, looks crazy. He challenges the main character with a series of puzzles that have easy, but non-obvious solutions.
Eventually, he has the main character duel "anyone in this room" and presents three very strong and rough champions. Thinking he's clever, he challenges the crazy old man.
The crazy old man rips off his robe to expose a chiseled physique. He turns out to be one of the most powerful earth benders alive, despite also being one of (if not the) oldest.
I knew racism was alive, I just thought it was a crochety old man that we're all just waiting to die. Nah man. It's an old man that can and will whoop my ass because he's in such peak shape he'll probably end up outliving me.
I woke up to a three-day ban from reddit for 'inciting violence' by saying
Hey Trump, if you're gonna go around bombing world leaders, there's one I'd really like to see taken care of. Pull it off and you'll be more famous than the guy that killed Hitler.
I didn't incite shit. Trump started it.
More reason for me to think that Spez is trying to be Trump's hype-man. Like Lefou to Gaston. Except at least Gaston was handsome.
That's like a few years ago, I was on vacation. My wife's mom was turning 60, so we went on a big family vacation to a resort in Mexico.
It was a great vacation. We were coming up on the end of a New England winter, so a tropical beach resort was very much needed.
But, of course, being in a different country, we were all about as disconnected as it gets. We weren't receiving text messages, or phone calls. We weren't doom scrolling. We didn't bring laptops or tablets. Though a couple of us spoke some broken Spanish (mostly, 'mas cerveza, por favor' or 'dame dos margaritas, muy fuerte'), we couldn't really understand the newspapers or broadcasts. It was all quite peaceful.
On the way back from the airport, we stopped at the store to pick up some groceries and dry goods we were low on in the house. Nothing extreme...toilet paper, clorox wipes, hand sanitizer. You know, basic hygiene staples that you could usually find anywhere. But weirdly, today, the store was out of all three. Like, shelves-stripped-bare out. Finding any of these three was like finding a Turboman doll.
The next day, the Governor declared a state of emergency. March 10, 2020. An outbreak of a novel virus doubled in state-wide cases overnight, the majority of which traced back to a conference a block away from my office (in a building my company rents space from). I could have been sharing a subway car with one of them a couple weeks earlier.
When we left, we were a little concerned, but not particularly. There were fewer than 100 cases in the whole country, most of whom had travelled from Wuhan or aboard the Diamond Princess.
Although by that point we (my family) completely distrusted Trump and all shit that dribbles out of his mouth, we didn't have much reason to not accept his handling (yet). It sounded, sincerely, like he actually had a hold of the thing and was taking reasonable action to prevent the spread.
Are you an idiot or have you not been paying attention?
This isn't "I need a source" type stuff. They aren't hiding this...they just aren't talking about it on their platforms, for obvious reasons.
Do you know who Elon Musk is? Jeff Bezos? Larry Ellison?
You should. Because they are paying a lot of money to have nearly exclusive control (among themselves) of all national media.
Meanwhile, Sinclair and Nexstar are fighting to control all of the local broadcast stations. They aren't just buying up the station, they are buying the reputations of the known and trusted local news-anchors. That shit is priceless when you are running a propaganda machine.
I get what you're saying but honestly I'm finding it quite surprising that you're on Lemmy and haven't already seen it a billion times.
Alright, the founder of Oracle...One Rich Asshole Called Larry Ellison...had a kid. David. David owns Skydance Media. He founded it in 2010. Daddy helped him round up the capital to acquire Paramount, last year.
Now he's trying (and thus far succeeding) to also buy Warner Brothers. Here's what's in that package. Importantly, CNN.
Oh yeah, he also has a big stake in TikTok, via Oracle.
You know Jeff Bezos, yea? He bought WaPo a while ago now, and over the past couple of years has been asserting more influence over the content of the paper, drawing sharp criticism. Relevant.
We all know about Rupert Murdoch. No sense talking about him.
And we all know who owns Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, and what a colossal piece of shit he is.
And who owns X, and how he makes Zuck look like a rabbit turd.
I really hope I don't have to explain Sinclair and Nexstar to you. They've been buying up practically every local broadcast affiliate. In my area, all local broadcast news is controlled by these two companies. Sinclair especially has been called out a few times calling for national runs of their highly opinionated script ("this is extremely dangerous to our democracy").
And then, there's /u/spez. Fuck /u/spez.
For extra credit, Peter Theil. Manipulative, conniving, petty piece of shit that he is. Founded Palantir, the surveillance mecha. Look how he used Hulk Hogan for litigious revenge. Major Trump supporter. Huge bigot. Vance's mentor. An openly gay, apartheid, libertarian bigot. You can't make this shit up.
There's a lot for you to go on here. It's not like I can just give you a link that explains everything. You really need to be following along because there's years of shit to unpack here, and as they enjoy controlling the news, they aren't going to be outright about telling you about it. You've got to dig.
I get it. I feel like a conspiracy nutter now too. But I don't have the time to hold your hand and open your eyes to the reality that's been surrounding you for years. It's there. Look.
The fourth estate is entirely controlled by billionaire interests that are friends, donors, and protectors of Trump. It's not hidden.
Society is starting to appropriately accommodate neurodivergence, yet stupid/idiot/crazy/lazy etc. stay in the vocabulary.
