Java 2 SDK, SE (often called J2SE), by Sun Microsystems, Inc., is the standard Java development kit for creating, testing, and deploying cross-platform Java applications. It combines the Java Runtime Environment with a comprehensive suite of developer tools and the core Java class libraries that define the platform, enabling “write once, run anywhere” portability across major operating systems.

Key components and capabilities:

• Compiler and launcher: javac and java for building and running applications
• Core APIs: language utilities, collections, I/O, networking, security, internationalization, JDBC, and RMI
• User interface: AWT and Swing for building graphical desktop applications, plus applet support
• Packaging and documentation: jar, javadoc, and jarsigner for archiving, documenting, and signing code
• Debugging and inspection: jdb and javap, along with key management and policy tools (keytool, policytool)

Designed for both learning and production use, the Java 2 SDK, SE supports building standalone applications, reusable libraries, and client–server components. The product line later became known as the Java SE Development Kit (JDK), but it remains the foundational toolkit associated with the classic Java 2 platform.
