The Mobile River is a 45-mile-long (72 km) waterway in southwestern Alabama, formed by the confluence of the Alabama and Tombigbee rivers approximately 50 miles (80 km) north of Mobile, and flowing southward to empty into Mobile Bay on the Gulf of Mexico.[1] Its drainage basin covers about 44,000 square miles (110,000 km²), primarily within Alabama but extending into Mississippi, Tennessee, and Georgia, ranking it among the largest river systems east of the Mississippi River and sixth overall in the contiguous United States by watershed size.[2] The river's flow supports significant freshwater discharge into Mobile Bay, contributing to the region's high streamflow volumes and ecological productivity.[3]As the primary channel for the Port of Mobile, the river enables deep-water navigation for cargo handling, including steel, chemicals, and forest products, underscoring its economic role in regional trade and industry.[4] Historically, the waterway facilitated early European settlement, cotton export, and steamboat traffic, shaping the development of Mobile as a key Gulf Coast port while influencing patterns of agriculture and migration in the Black Belt region.[5] Ecologically, the basin hosts diverse aquatic species, though habitat alterations from dams, channelization, and pollution have led to declines in endemic fish and mussel populations, prompting conservation efforts focused on watershed management.[6]

The Mobile River originates at the confluence of the Alabama River and the Tombigbee River, situated approximately 30 miles north of the Mobile metropolitan area in southwestern Alabama.[7] This junction occurs near the boundary between Mobile and Washington counties, marking the beginning of the river's independent course as it flows southward through the coastal plain.[8]From the confluence, the Mobile River extends southward for about 45 miles (72 km), traversing low-lying terrain before entering Mobile Bay at the city of Mobile.[9] Along its main stem, the river receives contributions from minor tributaries such as Chickasaw Creek, which joins approximately 5 miles (8 km) upstream of Mobile Bay.[2] The river's path is characterized by a relatively straight southerly trajectory, with widths varying from 0.5 to 1 mile in its lower reaches.As the Mobile River approaches Mobile Bay, it enters the expansive Mobile-Tensaw Delta, a complex wetland system spanning over 200,000 acres where the main channel distributes into multiple arms.[10] Key distributaries include the Tensaw River, which carries the primary flow westward before rejoining influences near the bay, and the Spanish River, a significant eastern branch that parallels the main stem.[11] Other delta channels, such as the Apalachee and Blakeley Rivers, interconnect within this network, facilitating tidal exchange but forming part of the river's terminal course rather than upstream tributaries.[11]Upstream, the Tombigbee River connects to the Tennessee River via the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, a 234-mile (377 km) navigation canal and channel system completed in 1985, effectively extending the Mobile River's headwaters northward into Tennessee and linking it to the inland waterway network.[12] This engineered linkage alters the effective drainage path for navigation purposes but does not change the natural confluence defining the Mobile River's start.[12]

Indigenous Utilization
The Mobile River and its delta served as critical resources for Mississippian culture peoples, particularly those of the Pensacola variant, who constructed complex mound settlements to exploit the waterway's offerings prior to European contact around 1550 CE.
