Close Range: Wyoming Stories is a collection of eleven short stories set in the rural landscapes of Wyoming, portraying the tough lives of ranchers, cowboys, rodeo performers, and other residents facing isolation, economic pressures, and personal conflicts. The stories vary in length and tone but collectively subvert traditional Western tropes to reveal the harsh realities of modern frontier life. - "Job History": Leeland Lee, raised on a struggling hog farm, cycles through a series of dead-end jobs while trying to support his family amid Wyoming's economic downturns and personal misfortunes.[5]
- "The Blood Bay": A man reflects on his life's failures through the story of a prized horse, highlighting themes of loss and the unforgiving nature of ranching.[6]
