microblog

where my normal blog is biweekly releases of full-length, edited work, my microblogs are offhand and incomplete thoughts that i still thought were interesting enough to justify writing down. sometimes i turn them into blogposts later.

most of these are crossposted between here and my website league account.

these don't show up in my normal rss feed, but you can still follow them here.

rewatching jacob geller's Dark Souls III is Thinking of Ending Things and–

magic

magic not as an umbrella term for "the not-understood" but as a countervailing force to science and experimentation. magic as the thing that makes experiments return bogus results, that breaks sensors and gauges, that times the passing truck with the bird flying overhead to contaminate the sample. mages as intrinsically contrary to consensus reality, as madmen inflicting their delusions on the world, as liars and con artists pulling one over on us all.

css neatness

discovered something really cool about the new(ish) nested css blocks.

synth upgrade procedure

you open the box with your new compute units. it's a little surreal to be staring down at them; they were backordered for two months, then on the cheapest mailship for another four months, and then they got misdelivered to the wrong jovian, somehow – but finally, after the better part of an earth year, they're here.

writing a blurb for a game that doesn't exist (but i kinda wanna make):

synths

thinking about synths. glass faceplates with low-density, single-color LED faces, wrapped around the top of a snout, smoky glass plating. articulated joints. solenoid-powered retractable claws. fingers that can split to offer smaller appendages for finer work. no muscle tremors or jitters. philosophical questions about continuity of consciousness sharpened to a razor’s edge. coprocessors, sensors, storage, background tasks.

labeling identity

thinking about how we label our experiences of identity.

courier survival guide

tempting myself to start an scp-style open creative project. the idea is it's a survival guide written after the apocalypse, maintained by a tenuously global messenger network. the articles being contributed are explanations of how to survive various global hazards. no one is ever quite explicit about what the apocalypse is, but there sure are *implications*.

understandings of games

shoutout to jacob geller for recommending another book to me simply by describing it: pilgrim in the microworld, by david sudnow. not because the book itself seems all that educational of a read, but because it's an utterly different perspective to mine.

nothing nice to say

thinking vague thoughts about the phrase "if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all", which is stupid asshole bullshit that only the biggest dumbo on earth could have come up with. that's right, I'm pinning this on you, Brooklyn neighborhood "Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass", you fuckin nerds

on shakespeare

occasionally I refer to "william shakespeare" as "billy dickwiggler", because he was a bawdy comedian for the masses, not some lofty orator. this is a pun on my part: his name is "shake spear", and "spear" can be a euphemism for "dick", so… dickwiggler.

cheerful teacher

character idea: cheerful teacher whose every compliment and criticism is phrased in terms of nihilism. "excellent work! you’ve successfully distracted yourself for another irretrievable fraction of your finite life, and in doing so you’ve produced an essay that was a most pleasing use of mine."

unfathomable

eldritch being that is, simply put, the goodest boy. on earth it looks like someone took a golden retriever and cranked it up to eleven thousand. the goldest retriever. and that’s it; no ulterior motives or w/e, just an unfathomable power directed entirely towards being a very good boy.

256 bits

thinking about scale.

on the far side of infinity

when i am, death is not. when death is, i am not. how can i fear that which i’ll never meet?

…but death’s little cousins are rather more approachable.

the month after pride

as pride month comes to a close, let’s all decide to push our comfort zones with the next deadly sin! i know sloth and lust are traditional and fun, but i think they’re best enjoyed in moderation – why not dip your toes into vore with a gluttony month, or channel your anger at the current state of politics with thirty-one days of wrath? you’ve got options, is all i’m saying.
