Breakout Sessions

Breakouts are your chance to learn from your fellow Flywheelers! Check out the list of topics below and click for more info.

Did you miss your chance to sign up and now you're filled with FOMO?

    Session 1:

  • Using Vim: Mastering the Dark Arts | Room 206

    Benjamin Turner

Vim has a reputation for being old and hard to use. This is well deserved. Maybe you've heard about Vim and have mastered quitting it. Perhaps you're curious about learning more, but want to know the larger why -- what's in it for me? Let's take a look at some of the powerful features that are built into Vim and how learning it can be a great addition to your tech toolbelt.

  • Crucial Conversations | Main Room

    Tommy Vacek & Keegan Mahoney

The talk will be an overview of the importance of individual and organization to have crucial conversations. This is a key indicator of the success or failure of a company, team, or project. It will be taking an out from book Crucial Conversations, but with some of my own learnings.

  • What we have learnt in 1 year of remote? | Room 202

    T-Rave & Sam Toohey

Ever wonder what it's like to work remote? Already remote but looking for tips on doing it better? Come on down to T-Rave & Sam's Remote Emporium!

  • Working without urgency | Room 204

    Jack Sellwood

We go meeting to meeting, let our inboxes fill-up, and impulsively check Slack for the next emergency. What would work be like if we were able to choose what to work on instead of reaction dictating our work? In this breakout, learn tips to leave Slack channels, ignore email, and thin your information intake. Do it enough and you might just find yourself asking: what should I do now?

  • Real Talk with Remotes! | Embarcadero Room

    Lauren Rose

Ever look at a photo and think “Who the heck is that and do they work in the Flywheel office?” This is your chance to meet a few remote employees from across the globe and step into their world! This is a facilitated panel session by Lauren featuring Carolina(Portugal), Christi (Colorado, USA), Donnie (Georgia, USA), Megan (Missouri,USA) and Justin (Australia) where we dive deeper into a day in the life of a remote worker, the best and worst things about working remote and much more.

  • Session 2:

  • How to get sh** done: Laurel style | Main Room

    Laurel Oetken

Ever wondered what’s in a project coordinator’s playbook and how we manage to keep track of everything? Get a run down on how to streamline your personal and professional life, best practices for staying organized, minimizing distractions, and most importantly, getting shit done!

  • Managing Change | Room 202

    Alyssa Heusinger

How to thrive while moving at the speed of a rocket ship (and other lessons learned by a Type-A girl living in an uncertain world).

  • Why plugin updates are not so simple after all | Room 204

    Nathan Pike

WordPress is simple! Plugins are simple too. Updating them is simple. So plugin update services should be simple too, right? Unfortunately, it’s not. Come learn about some of the plugin update challenges Services is working to overcome.

  • How to win as a team! | Embarcadero Room

    Donnie Green

Is everyone on your team working towards the win? I'll talk about how leaders and individuals can influence their team positively by defining 3 key pillars to being successful. 1. What are we doing? 2. Why are we doing it? 3. How are we going to get there?

  • You Don’t Have to Suck at Money | Room 206

    Jonathan Teixeira

It’s no use bringing home the bacon if you don’t know how to cook it. Come learn how to use money in this talk that will help you live out all 7 of Flywheel’s core values - the fate of the world depends on it. Seriously.

  • Session 3:

  • Sales Engineering at WP Engine | Room 202

    Ryan Hodge & Mike Sanchez

Interested in learning how Sales Engineering works at WP Engine? Come along for a behind the scenes peek.

  • WordPress with WP Engine & The Agency Partner Program | Embarcadero Room

    Tony Gilharry

Learn all about the WP Engine Agency Partner Program and how we pitch it as part of our Partner of Choice strategy.

  • Employee Resource Groups: Represents (D&I), Pride & Sheroes | Room 204

    Jason Stallings & Jason Cohen

Learn all about the technology we use, what we've experimented with, and what we want to use in the future.

  • Our Approach to Design Systems | Room 206

    Jason Cross

Learn about design systems at WP Engine & how they empower the Marketing team.

Socials

We love to socialize here at Flywheel, so we've planned a few events that are sure to make memories!

  • Wednesday / Meet the Remotes

Nightwheel

It's an all-hands-on-deck kind of week!

We need everyone to pitch in with at least one shift to help cover the queues. After all, we are a 24/7 global company that just happens to all be in the same city at once. How cool is that!?!

The need:

  • Thursday - sign up for a shift during our off-site day for Fly Fest
  • Nightwheel - Monday through Saturday we have night shifts that need to be covered. Who knows what could happen at Nightwheel, at night…

Use this to try your hand at something new, get to know the stellar support team a little better, and make some great memories if the process! Nightwheel of course has a piece of specialty swag - only for those who work a Nightwheel shift. Dinner will be provided for each 5–9pm shift.

To get to the moon, you'll need an extra life.
