Was trying to convey that he has his back to the class, and is reading his comic in secrecy. Not enough room on the page to indicate this more legibly however.
Based on an underground semi-ancient comic by Mat Brinkman called Skeleton Jelly Multiforce, which got shared a lot last decade when people were posting weird shit, which is how I discovered it.
