No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is it reasonable to be concerned about security issues when switching to Linux?English
1·3 hours agoIt is reasonable to be concerned, and you absolutely should be. Just because it’s a smaller target (at the moment), it doesn’t mean you’re completely safe. Having said that, if you apply general common sense to your habits, you will mostly be ok. You don’t have to be tech savvy to know that you shouldn’t be blindly installing software or running scripts you downloaded from the internet. You also don’t need to be tech savvy to be a safe internet user and have good security hygiene (i.e. avoid dubious websites, verify that sites are legit, only download from official sources, use an adblocker, responsible with passwords, etc.).
Basic security measures like installing UFW on your computer and blocking incoming connections already help a ton. Then you can install clamAV if you still deal with Windows files and extensions.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What band/artist have you seen live more than once, would gladly go see again, and what keeps you coming back?English
1·4 hours agoI’ve seen Haken and Thank You Scientist at least 3 times, and I won’t hesitate to see them again. Just virtuosos so it’s always great to see people of that skill play their instruments. Meshuggah I’ve only seen once, but will definitely go anytime I have the chance. Heaviest band I’ve ever seen live.

1·21 minutes agoI unfortunately can no longer stand Labrie’s live vocals. I saw them in their latest tour, just so I could see them back with Portnoy, but that’s probably the last time for me. I shouldn’t be comparing them, but because they are contemporaries, Russel Allen (with Symphony X) just blows him out of the water as he’s still amazing live.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Those of you with bathrooms attached to your bedroom, do you normally keep the door open or closed while you sleep and what's your reasoning?English
5·9 hours agoI don’t like open doors directly connected to where I’m sleeping, unless I’m just taking an afternoon nap and someone else is awake in the house. We keep the bathroom door closed enough to just before the doorknob latches, so it isn’t noisy opens/closes the door when using the bathroom in the middle of the night.

Technology@lemmy.world•WhatsApp officially names Mullvad and Amnezia VPN as go-to tools for bypassing censorshipEnglish
15·3 days agoI guess the broken clock thing applies for the Mullvad recommendation. I haven’t seen any issues with them and they have had a good track record.
They spray water into your mouth and use a suction tube to remove the water. It does help I think for stuff life fillings because you don’t want water to contaminate the material before it dries out, or get water inside the tooth before it’s sealed. But yeah, you don’t get the satisfaction of being able to wash your mouth.
Older dentist chairs had them, and dentists in developing countries still use them. Sip water from a cup, swish it around your mouth, then spit in the small sink. There’s also a small faucet to refill the cup. Always had to do that as a kid when visiting the dentist.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL women experience pain longer than men.English
10·3 days agoDoesn’t the body release a bunch of hormones during childbirth to sort of act as pain modulators and it kinda makes the mother’s memory of it less intense than it actually was? I remember reading something about it being an evolutionary thing so the mother isn’t deterred from getting pregnant again.
To be fair, the one on the left is probably from years ago. His face immediately before the fillers on the right was much older than the one on the left. Putting those two side-by-side isn’t exactly an honest before-and-after photo.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What should be done and over with by now?English
2·3 days agoI hear ya. It’s the culture that needs to change. There are a lot of other countries where guns are available, but there’s no culture celebrated around it and it’s not ingrained into being such an important/integral thing to society.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What should be done and over with by now?English
253·4 days agoI’m sure I’m gonna get some spicy replies to this, but guns and gun culture in the US. There was a major shooting in my city in the past couple of days, and you can’t even guess where because it happens every goddamn day somewhere in the country.
Any situation where there is a gun or the likelihood a gun is present immediately escalates it. Everyone is on edge because at anytime someone might be carrying. A minor argument or altercation can easily turn into a homicide. I avoid large crowded events when it’s outdoors and there are no security gates and checks. I stay away from bar districts on weekends because the chances of someone intoxicated and carrying is much higher. I’m tired of having my head on a swivel everywhere I go.
And for the 2A folks, that used to work back when you can actually successfully take up arms against the government when they’re oppressing you. Joe Redneck’s 500 guns in his house won’t help stop the government from taking away his rights.
The worst are the ones that use loud outtakes from meme videos.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the situation like in Puerto Vallarta currently?English
