Battery draining quickly on new iPhone 15

purchase new iphone 15 instore at apple on August 13, 2025

I let my battery completely die, powered down to recharge the next

morning I did less than an hour and my battery was already down to 94%

two and a half hours later my battery shows 87% is this normal for a brand new phone

I always had apple products and this seems off

NEVER EVER let your iPhone battery fully deplete. NEVER. Lithium iON batteries can be damaged, but more importantly they can prematurely age doing this. Once, likely won't hurt, but don't do it again. In fact, avoid letting the battery go below 20%.

Now, you just got the phone, so it is currently working hard behind the scenes to index millions of bytes of data, which depending on the size of your backup can take a few days. It's not usual for a brand new phone to have reduced battery life for the first few days. Based on what you posted, I don't really see that you have any issue.

The absolute best practice for your battery is to turn on Optimized Battery Charging in Settings > Battery. Then plug your phone in to charge when you go to bed at night and leave it plugged in ALL night EVERY night. DO NOT power it down to charge. Make sure you have iCloud Backup turned on and have the phone connected to Wifi while charging. You'll wake to a fully charged phone, which also backed up while you slept, so you'll never lose more than a few hours of data should something go wrong.
